2017 47/85
2018 45/88
2019 45/128
2020 75/103

Let's see how I do this year...

4. Hadley and Grace by Suzanne Redfearn *

So, I am getting back to my project of cataloguing my books (I did nothing last year). I cleared a shelf and am now proudly in the M's. My progress will be tracked up in >4 Berly:.

I added two books to my donate pile and grabbed one to read that I never finished: Eden's Outcasts about Louisa May Alcott and her father.

And in this same shelf, I also came across a book I loved, The Widow Clicquot, about the woman who made the champagne empire of the same name. My BIL gave us a bottle for New Years and we toasted him last night! Thought that was a fun coincidence.

Girl Waits With Gun by Amy Stewart 4.25

"From the New York Times best-selling author of The Drunken Botanist comes an enthralling novel based on the forgotten true story of one of the nation’s first female deputy sheriffs.

"Constance Kopp doesn’t quite fit the mold. She towers over most men, has no interest in marriage or domestic affairs...One day a belligerent and powerful silk factory owner runs down their buggy, and a dispute over damages turns into a war of bricks, bullets, and threats as he unleashes his gang on their family farm. When the sheriff enlists her help in convicting the men, Constance is forced to confront her past and defend her family — and she does it in a way that few women of 1914 would have dared."

Loved this story and the three sisters! It's a fun read, not only because of the confrontation with the silk lord and all the drama that follows, but also the historical background of the 1910s: economics, women's roles, the justice system, horse vs. car, etc. I think it is even cooler that the story is based on an actual real-life female person and her family! Can't wait to start the second in the series later this year.

Thank you SS Lori T!!

So why was jessibud2 looking up the Maggie O'Farrell interview for me? She mentioned this interview on Darryl's thread and I said I absolutely loved the book and would love to hear the author! So, here's my review:

I Am, I Am, I Am was one of my last books in 2020. I loved it! Not all the brushes with death are hers (but most are). I could personally relate to several of the medical incidents, not so much the criminal ones (but they were scary and fascinating), and I was especially moved by the last chapter featuring her daughter who has eczema and allergies. I finished the chapter and immediately called my parents to thank them for doing such a great job caring for me as a little kid. I have just a few (!) medical conditions, but you won't need any to appreciate this book.

Each chapter is a different narrow escape, well written, suspenseful and told with insight and humor. O'Farrell faces death 17 times in this book. You could call her unlucky, but to still be here after all this, I think she is quite the opposite--incredibly lucky!! Recommended! O'Farrell is also the author of Hamnet, another hot read.

94jessibud2
jan 2, 2021, 7:34 pm

She talks mostly about Hamnet in the interview but near the end, they discuss this memoir, too. She is very engaging.

I'd been wondering about I Am, I Am, I Am, Twin. I love O'Farrell and will definitely but this on my list. It sounds like you are coming to it from a unique viewpoint...

How are Mom and Dad? They're in Florida, right?

>94 jessibud2: I enjoyed reading about her, especially how she didn't want to write Hamnet until after her son had gotten older. Cool stuff!

>95 ChelleBearss: You're welcome and I'm honored! A list! Now there's an idea. LOL

>96 BLBera: I loved it. And, no, you don't have to have medical issues to understand or enjoy this book! : )

Mom and Dad are in Florida and very tired of the COVID shutdown. They've been pretty good, but my Mom has dementia and I know it is hard on Dad to not have more social interaction. He's holding up pretty well though. The have a routine going on that involves daily work on the puzzle, Zoom workouts and a little sunshine. The upside of not going anywhere is she is not confused and doesn't repeatedly have to ask where they are or who they are with.

Good to hear your parents have a routine they are both comfortable with. My dad had brain cancer and could be a bit erratic, but he became a big fan of going for a walk (me pushing his wheelchair) around the neighborhood at night. If I forgot, he'd remind me!

I took down Christmas yesterday. Well, I still have to pack away all my Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer figures, then I'm done.

Jazz by Toni Morrison 3.5
"In the winter of 1926, when everybody everywhere sees nothing but good things ahead, Joe Trace, middle-aged door-to-door salesman of Cleopatra beauty products, shoots his teenage lover to death. At the funeral, Joe’s wife, Violet, attacks the girl’s corpse."

And that's how the story's first few pages begin. Love, obsession, and black urban life. The plot line is discordant, jumping between storylines and past and present. It beats with ugly remembrances of violence and broken families, torn lives. Yet the writing in this book is simply beautiful, the unnamed narrator haunting. The book seems to echo the music of Jazz itself, saying listen to me!

Themes and Variations by David Sedaris 4.5

This essay is only 17 pages long, but I loved it! Sedaris talks about the "themes" that come up during his interactions with fans during his book tours, from what happens when you try to give away $50 to strangers to unusual things people insert into themselves. You gotta read this!

So I am cracking this one open today. But I have a numbers question...

The content part of this book is 395 pages, but when you add on the notes and index it soars to 477 pages.

When you track the number of pages you've read, do you count everything (which is what the publisher lists) or only the "storyline" pages?

158katiekrug

>157 Berly: - It depends if I read the other stuff or not. Definitely not the index since I don't read that. But I never go with the publisher or Amazon or whatever lists as the page number because I find them way off, as they seem to count title pages and such.

The Iron Rule--Treat others less powerful than you however you like.

The Silver Rule--Treat others as you'd like to be treated.
(Currently my understanding of the Golden Rule--courteous, but not necessarily informed.)

The Golden Rule--Treat others as THEY'd like to be treated.

It is happening. The Arkansas Chucklehead (noooo, not Tom Cotton, the other one) has been arrested. The dope wearing his job ID was reported by internet sleuths to his (now former) employer.

Recall that during the summer of 2020, Trump badgered the house and senate to pass a bill making it a federal crime to deface federal property. In fact, I think it was because of the federales shenanigans in Portland that it got passed. Up to 10 year sentence. Prosecutors can wield that new law against these miscreants.

The week did start a bit slowly as classes don't start until January 19 so some folks were still using some vacation. The week ended up being one for the history books and I'm glad (glad? IDK) that I could sit glued to the telly for most of Wednesday.

I have a friend who said on Thursday "well, 2020 was what it was. And 2021 is just like 'hold ma beer.'" Cracked me up.

>165 weird_O: I kept thinking about that whole 10-years for destroying or damaging federal property on Wednesday. I guess the idiot who got his photo taken sitting at Nancy Pelosi's desk didn't (or apparently didn't) damage or destroy anything so he is facing up to one year in jail. Still, at least he was arrested.

>168 jnwelch: I am not very far into Caste and I have already used several book darts. Here's one marked passage in which Wilkerson likens our country and our racism to an old house.

"When people live in an old house, they come to adjust to the idiosyncrasies and outright dangers skulking in an old structure. They put buckets under a wet ceiling, prop up groaning floors, learn to step over that rotting wood tread in the staircase. The awkward becomes acceptable, and the unacceptable becomes merely inconvenient. Live with it long enough, and the unthinkable becomes normal. Exposed over the generations, we learn to believe that the incomprehensible is the way that life is supposed to be." (p. 16)

"Many people may rightly say, "I had nothing to do with how this all started. I have nothing to do with the sins of the past. My ancestors never attacked indigenous people, never owned slaves. And yes. Not one of us was here when this house was built." (p. 16)

But it is now ours and it must be fixed.

Heaven's River by Dennis E. Taylor 3.75

I do love the Bobiverse, but this one didn't have quite the same appeal. Mind you, the previous ones have been some of my all-time favorites. I still enjoyed the snarky humor and the characters very much; the newly discovered universe was fun and the Bob drift was interesting. It just took soooooo looooong. The audio version is amazing so kudos to narrator Ray Porter. Will I read another one? Still a definite yes.

5. Banker by Dick Francis 3.5

An investment banker arranges the purchase of a champion racehorse and gets caught up in murder in this New York Times bestseller that's “fraught with violence, conspiracy and, of course, horses.” (The Boston Globe). There was one person I wish hadn't died and the ending was a little too perfect, but I haven't read a mystery by this author in quite a while and it was so much fun to get back to him.

Dick Francis year-long group read found here: https://www.librarything.com/topic/328070#n7371364

I was 19 when I took on the mantle of Yogi Bear. It was a summer job in college. Still think that making me Yogi was typecasting - I could have played Huckleberry Hound ( my favorite) but they picked someone else.

Nice to be reminded of the craft and fun of Dick Francis. Remember reading Nerve as a Readers Digest Condensed novel and then running to the library to see what else he had done. Still impressed how the Readers Digest people could compress that book without dropping any of the tricky plot points.

I like that version of the Golden Rule "Do unto others as they would like to be done to"

The Wiccan Rede is "As ye harm none, do what ye will" which is not bad but for me inadequate.

>200 Berly: I enjoyed Banker. Really excited to hear about a Dick Francis group read. But I'm not even going to pretend to join because they would all be rereads for me, and this is the year I'm committing to clearing out ROOTs.

I first randomly picked up Flying Finish from a library rack and was slow to warm to the protagonist but was wowed by the (wait for it) flying finish. Then I read The Edge, and I was sold. I devoured all of the Dick Francis ouevre. I still find his books charming. I recently read Field of Thirteen and decided that I needed to never read any of his short stories. Because of their brevity and because his tales always revolve around an ingenious fiddle, the short stories focus on the villains and not on the hero foiling them. Yuck. But otherwise, Dick Francis stories never fail to entertain me.

I *love* giving people random little compliments like that! It's never as awkward as you assume it's going to be in your head, and it always seems to brighten their day (and mine). It feels particularly good to compliment an employee if you're in line after someone who has been rude to them (I also like poking fun at the rude person once they've gone and getting the employee to laugh about it, as a way of saying "I see you and am on your side.")

Just started Sanjay Gupta's Keep Sharp: Build a Better Brain at Any Age

My Mom suffers from dementia and I want to know what I can do to prevent decline later in my life. So far, I have 6 of the indicators and anything over 5 means I need to change a few things to limit my risk. One of the new ones is stress. This past year was a doozy! So I need to work on letting go of the things I can't change and not worry about all the possible dire outcomes, but just deal with things as they come.

What I am doing right is exercising. That appears to be the #1 thing you can do to keep your brain healthy.

>238 Berly: Thirteen, to be precise...though remember that free Kindlebooks count. BookBub, Riffle, BookCave...all great sources of free/cheap Kindlebooks.

*smooch*

>247 richardderus: I was told the free ones didn't count, but the cheap ones did. I always mix a few of those in so I don't overdo it on the pocketbook. I actually have a gift card that will help a bit when my Thingaversary haul comes in unless I use it for my birthday first.

>248 thornton37814: That piece of casuistry is silly, *every*book*counts*! Bosh. Free = not-a-book somehow? Piffle!

As long as it's used for Our Sacred Addiction, it's all good, Lori.

>249 richardderus: I don't remember who told me that, but I was told that a couple years ago -- or it was mentioned on someone else's thread right before my time to start acquiring my haul. I will probably set a $$ limit on my haul. I always need a few that don't cost so much when I need to purchase as many as I do. It will only get progressively worse so I'm sure in a few more years most of my acquisitions will be free or cheap!

Berly, why does your review of Vesper Flights read like a review of a cheese book?

>239 Esquiress: I also do the asymmetrical hairdo! Mine is a bit shorter with one side only an inch long and the other side sweeping from the part to my ear. With COVID i have been cutting it myself and it is actually the same length on both sides now. I asked my family and they voted for keeping it long for now. I think I'll do that and go back to short when summer and warm weather hits again. : )

>243 Caroline_McElwee: Thank you!! I started collecting my Thingaversary books today.

I think I will not rush it to collect my 13, but rather feel less guilty when I buy future books. ; )

The Book of Delights: Essays is a collaboration between Literary Arts and the Multnomah County Library "Everybody Reads" event. Ross Gay is a poet and I am excited to read his essays. (He will speak virtually in April.) I am excited because the book is supposed to be a fun, funny, grateful, philosophical, beautiful book about lots of life's daily events and small details, a reminder that we need to look for delight and enjoy our shared bonds.

>244 ChelleBearss: Downtime? Alone time? What's that?

I am a little frazzled, but for the most part it has been very nice to have a full house. I am going to do my best to enjoy this while I have it, because all too soon I will be an empty nester and that might be a bit TOO quiet! Finding a balance is so hard! LOL.

>245 BLBera: Hi Twin! You're too kind. Thank you. : ) I got my first two Thingaversary books today! See above ^. : )

>246 jnwelch: I am eager to get back to Caste. My bookclub is talking about it next Friday, so I better get going! It's an amazing book and given the political events lately, it is so very important.

PS -- I am nervous about tomorrow, January 20th....

>247 richardderus: That's one of the reasons I love TKD. Not only is it great excercise, but I do better with classes and I enjoy the brain challenge of learning the new routines. I just have to try to fit in walks on my days off and on the days when I am physically not up to snuff. Something is better than nothing on those days!

And as my membership here gets longer and my Thingaversary count gets higher, I am not sure I am going to want to buy that many books in a month!! We'll see...it's a nice problem to have. "Sacred Addiction" -- so true!! ; )
