Penrod and Penrod and Sam were two of my favorite books as a child.

I loved Pollyanna as a child (can you tell I was invested in being good?) My mother thought she was sickeningly sweet and didn't understand how I could read about her.

I had some issues with Pollyanna but I read it several times. I never entirely bought into the whole "glad game" theory.

I adored Penrod, and the other Penrod books, but can not stand Booth Tarkington's other books. My mother gave me Penrod when I was in my 30s, and the mother of four sons, saying she Finally Understood Boys because of Penrod. I read it aloud to my six children, sometimes laughing so hard I could hardly speak.

My mom had the same view of Pollyanna as aviddiva's mother....but I liked Pollyanna all the same when I was a kid. I think there is a real benefit to the people around one, if one keeps a cheerful attitude, despite trying circumstances.

I loved Penrod and Penrod and Sam too!

Have you read City Boy by Herman Wouk.

I enjoyed it too. Although a good many years later.

I've read Penrod and The Eyes of the World, both a long time ago.

ETA correct touchstone.

There are now 3 copies of "The Fortunate Youth" in LT, but still none of W B Maxwell's "The Devil's Garden".

Interestingly enough, The Devil's Garden has been scanned into the Google Books database. You can view the text in full there.
