Can't post a comment

I'm not sure if it will post this for me, either. Started yesterday (Thurs) afternoon, but I'm having the same trouble today.

Initially, my Home page won't load (same as yesterday), and now I can't post a comment on a thread.

I might try a comment on someone's profile to see if that will work, too.

2LibraryCin
Bewerkt: mei 7, 2021, 9:15 pm

This posted... Not sure if my added comment will or not, though.

ETA: My added comment worked here, but I was unable yesterday (and again just a few minutes ago now) to add a comment to an already existing thread.

3LibraryCin
mei 7, 2021, 9:16 pm

I will add that I'm using Firefox on a PC. I should also test using Chrome...

4LibraryCin
Bewerkt: mei 7, 2021, 9:20 pm

Ok, it's working on Chrome, but not on FF.

ETA: Oddly, FF allowed me to add this entirely new thread, and I was able to comment to it using FF.

But, I am unable to add comments to any other already existing threads using FF.

I've had a similar issue. I can't comment on threads when I use Firefox, but I can in Edge. Same laptop.
Started earlier in the week.

Is this still happening?

12Helenliz

Yes. I still have to go into Edge, I can't comment in Firefox.

13SandraArdnas
mei 9, 2021, 12:49 pm

I just had my first problem with this too. Posting a comment seemed to do nothing, the comment was gone as if posted, but not added to the page. Refreshing the page showed it though. Still on FF 88 and Windows 10

14LibraryCin
mei 9, 2021, 12:59 pm

Yes, still happening. Refreshing the page does not help for me.

Also started at the same time: my home page won't load though other pages will. Also FF only. But when I see that happen, I can guess I won't be able to post a comment, either, and that has been the case since Thursday.

I am commenting now via Chrome. Thanks.

Info for conceptDawg.

Seems okay in Mac FF, at least for me.
Browserstack isn't letting me into Win FF, claiming a network issue, so I've left off testing for now.

I already incremented the global version.

Can I post?
Apparently yes.

17lyzard
mei 9, 2021, 6:31 pm

Okay. I'm on Chrome now. There's a range of things wrong on Firefox: I can't comment or edit my thread, and visually I am missing the stars that indicate a starred thread and also the up-buttons on my thread.

18LibraryCin
mei 9, 2021, 8:52 pm

>17 lyzard: Good catch. I don't use stars for much, so hadn't noticed that, but I just went to check to see if the up-arrows were there for me, and they are not.

There is a small box where the arrow should be, and it still does function as the up-arrow does (at least for me), but it doesn't appear as an arrow.

More notes for conceptdawg:

FF now works on Browserstack, and I can't get it to break on Win10 FF88. I started with complaints on https://www.librarything.com/topic/332049 . I tried doing it as ScarletBea, among other things—no problems.

Note >17 lyzard: where he says the image is missing. This would suggest a domain isn't loading, which would also explain JS problems, if it didn't load some of it.

Edit: The up-arrow is Font Awesome ( fas fa-arrow-to-top ).

A couple of things to try if your Firefox isn't working correctly.

1. Check to make sure your computer has the correct time/date set.
2. Force-reload the page. Reload the page with the shift-key held down.
3. Load LibraryThing in a private window. File menu -> New Private Window.

If any of these fix the problem then I'd love to know about it.

I haven't been able to duplicate the problems on 7 different versions of FF for Windows 10—from version 81 through to the current version 88.

At this point I think I need more information to give me a breakthrough clue, because it seems that your computers aren't able to read some of our resources (javascript, css, and/or font files) but I can't tell you why. Yet.

>20 conceptDawg:

1. Check
2. Still not working
3. I think this works. Had to re-log in via private window, but my home page loaded, so that's progress. Will see if this posts. I think it will based on the home page loading.

ETA #3. It worked! This was posted from a private window in FF.

22LibraryCin
Bewerkt: mei 10, 2021, 5:04 pm

Non-private window. I logged off and back on again. Let's see if this posts... Home page loaded.

ETA: It worked!

To others where it's not working, see if logging off and back on again works. I normally stay logged in all the time.

23LibraryCin
mei 10, 2021, 5:22 pm

FYI, just left temporarily and popped back in. Had to re-log off and back in again.

So... it seems that may be the case every time? (Unless whatever the issue is gets figured out or I use a private window or I use Chrome.)

24lyzard
mei 10, 2021, 5:46 pm

It's working in a private window but I had to log in anyway so I'm not sure about that side of it yet.

I'm having issues posting (and had issues a few days ago when I posted in the latest LT hunt thread). I'm using Chrome though, not Firefox. Chrome v84 on Windows 8. Currently trying to post in the 'problems with home page' thread but it's not working, let's see if I can get this one to post.
edit: Logged out and back in again and now it's posting, interestingly that also made the home page appear. Related or coincidence?

Bewerkt: mei 12, 2021, 10:24 am

Weirdly, I can't post in Chrome (this has been the case for several days) but had the idea to try Safari and that seems to be working fine.

ETA: after re-reading the above thread I logged out and back in on Chrome and now that's working too.

>20 conceptDawg: I'm not using FF but I have been having occasional problems posting replies and simultaneously with touchstone search inside those replies. The problems seem to occur more often in http:// pages than in https:// pages and I'd guess that's LT not my browser (it's also LT that's forcing my browser to load http:// pages instead of https:// as far as I can see).

I dunno if this is helpful but it's more info and a different approach.

28conceptDawg
mei 12, 2021, 3:07 pm

LibraryCin or anybody else that might be having this problem test to see if you are STILL having a problem. We have just pushed a change to our server config and I have a theory that it might have fixed the problem.

Then again, my theory could be completely wrong.

Also, I'd love to know if any of you are using ublock or similar adblocking extensions in your browser. Maybe those are somehow interfering in some way with our code in a strange way.

30LibraryCin
mei 12, 2021, 5:24 pm

>28 conceptDawg: Sadly, it did not work.

When the home page didn't load, I kind of figured that would be the case.

Also, I forgot to mention that the "reply" link/button isn't working, either. I have to type in the > and the post I'm replying to.

I think I also have it on Chrome, as well, though.

I couldn't do anything in anything this morning (post, search, load home page, stars and up-arrows missing), but logging out and logging back in has worked for Chrome, Firefox, and Firefox in a private window.

I'm having similar issues with W10 and FF.
Interesting scenarios, though. I rarely log out of LT, opting to kill the tab instead -- saves me the trouble of logging in again.

For the past couple of weeks, when I fire up LT, the screen is mostly blank, except for the header area, the left column, and toward the right side, a small blue rectangle displaying "loading" in it. It NEVER finishes loading.
All the links in the header (Home ... Zeitgeist) work fine. Nothing in the left column works, though.
Mainly, I use the Talk feature. Again, nothing in the left column works at all.
If I scroll down to the bottom of the list and tap on "Next" it returns me to the top of the first page, not the ensuing page. Scroll down again, and nothing has changed.
I have not had any problem in creating a new Talk thread, nor replying to one -- until today.

I told you that to tell you this:
I started a second tab in FF and fired up a second session in LT. Same mostly blank home page; same behavior in the Talk link.
So I signed out, and logged in again; username and password. I didn't have to prove I wasn't a robot, perhaps it was because I hadn't shut down the FF tab? Regardless, my home page loaded instantly; everything everywhere worked as expected.

I still had my original (Tab 1, we'll call it) LT session active. I used it to reply to a comment in the new TPBM thread I had created (Continuance of the previous thread) earlier today. I wrote a rather lengthy reply and tapped the Post Message button. Time passed, no pinwheels (whirling arrows), no crawling ellipses, not even a blue-box "loading" message. Bupkis. I screen-scraped the reply, went to Tab 2, found the TPBM thread and opened it to find my post from Tab 1 hadn't been added yet. Paste, post, and Bob's you're uncle.

My workaround for now will be to sign out of LT instead of killing the tab.
I'm also thinking you may (or not) want to see the cookies. If you do, fine, I'll send them to you. But at this point, I'd simply like to delete them all and start with a clean slate.

Should also mention that FF is the only browser I have installed on my laptop. Chrome, IE, etc, were removed years ago.

This is exactly what I see when I say the Home page doesn't load for me.

We're unable to reproduce this for members reporting the issue, making this bug rather "fun".

For folks who log into LT and their Homepage doesn't load properly: Can you please post a screenshot of what you're seeing in this thread?

For folks still unable to post: Can you please go to this page: https://www.librarything.com/test_cookies.php, copy everything (starting with the "LTAnonSessionID" and ending with the "talkuniq") in the "Your Cookies" section, and send it to me at kristi@librarything.com? This should help us with our digging.

Thank you!

>38 kristilabrie: For some reason I can't get the screenshot to post in this message. I get a blank page (only the header and sidebar are there) with a small blue box that says "loading." It just stays like this. The only way I can make it "work" is to click on any other link ("your books","profile", etc.) and then click the Home link. When I do that, the site loads normally and I can do everything (including make posts, obviously!)

I am on Chrome and Windows 10, although Chrome on my Chromebook at home does the exact same thing.

We have found the issue!

The issues we're seeing here are with folks going to (or being directed to) HTTP links rather than HTTPS. We are working on fixing this on a deeper level, but in the meantime:

If you're having trouble posting or loading the Homepage, please change your URL to https://www.librarything.com — or whatever domain you're using, and that should fix the problem.

>41 kristilabrie: Yay! Thank you!

ETA: When I posted this I had automatically re-logged in to a private window. When I saw this, I got out and went to a non-private, already logged in window, and it automatically loaded the https... URL, so it seems to be working better already! I didn't have to change it.

It does, indeed, work. I've altered my bookmark to make a grammatialy plural version of http. Thanks very much.

I am reluctant, however, to change the bug status, in deference to others who may still have an issue for whatever reason -- just in case.

Post-mortem:

So, basically, we switched servers two weeks ago. It coincided with the new search system—indeed, the new search system required the new servers. Due to a miscommunication, we also switched LibraryThing to run HTTPS-only. While we have narrowed the possibilities for non-HTTPS use of LibraryThing—for example, by routing all new sign-ins through HTTPS—we had held off on absolutely preventing non-HTTPS use of LibraryThing to accommodate some members and because we knew it would likely surface some problems. By a miscommunication, the projects were pushed together, but the programming staff were unaware of it. By an error, non-HTTPS use was crippled, but not all non-HTTPS requests were redirected to HTTP.

Eventually we figured out the various, weird problems came from members on HTTP, and the rest followed. We then faced the choice to "go forward" or "go backward." My inclination was to go back, but for technical reasons we were already "committed" and we decided to go forward instead--forward to an all-HTTPS site. As we had not done the testing we wanted to do, we expect a few problems to crop up now that all site access is by HTTPS alone, such as "mixed content" warnings. We will be looking for them, and fix them when we find them.

Thanks all. Sorry for the problems.

47LibraryCin

Thank you so much for figuring it out! I'm sure you will hear from anyone who comes across more issues, going forward. :-)

I've got an odd angle on this. In both Firefox and Chrome - FF for the last several days, Chrome today - I can get to my homepage, but it takes several seconds (7, just now in Chrome) to load. It appears as described above, with the blue "loading" box. However, the lock is closed - it's an HTTPS connection. It works, it's just very slow - and it's been slow for days and remains slow.

Multiple tests (going to Talk posts and then back to Home) - fastest load was 7 seconds, most were 10-12 seconds.

No problems with posting, or images appearing.
