I just discovered, a week ago, that books that should be in a series- could be put in a series. I tried it once- it added my book to a series- that was very tidy and complete- but that was a boo-boo- so I deleted it- but its not deleted.
moving forward: I tried to merge boy scout merit badge books into the series- which is pretty messy of its own accord. gratefully, most found their way there eventually; one or two did not. there definitely is no series option available to send them over to the merit badge series
how does one get books that should belong to a series- get them over to a series
easy answers are preferred - I still do not speak the lingo- or know how this place works- and many of the things that have been answered in the past don't work. I really try to avoid asking any questions at all- but I would think it would be in the interest of all to get works properly "serialized", rather than have 7800 single editions of the same work.
thx

On the individual work pages, there should be a module labelled "series and work relationships" and a link "add/edit".
Alternatively, from the series page, you can add books to the series by expanding the sidebar tab "edit series" and clicking on "add to/organize series".
If you provide a link for the work and/or series you are having trouble with, others might be able to provide more concrete help.

Series was redone recently, so older directions won't work.
If you see single editions of the same work, they should be combined, not made into a series.

here is the environmental science merit badge book. it has 4 members- but is not listed as belonging to the "merit badge series." this one had other problems when it came in from search- as my collections kept trying to tell me I had a duplicate copy- which i did not- and it was all confused with some other title.

>5 EGBERTINA: This one was easy enough. I combined your copy with the main work, which was already in the series.
>4 EGBERTINA: This one was more difficult as I first had to separate the various editions in your work, as there is no sign that all the copies were actually the BSA work. Your copy is now at https://www.librarything.com/work/26545918/summary
Please add something to your book - perhaps BSA as the author, so that it can be separated from the other book, which does not appear to be the BSA one. Then your copy can be separated from it and combined with the merit badge work.

OK, Done.

i did add boy scouts of america as author, not sure why it wasn't there. but still doesn't pop up as merit badge series.
I'm not sure what you mean by other copies of work??? this book is the one that was confused with another, but that is how it transferred in. i don't know why. they came in with correct titles, but one of them had wrong images of book covers that didn't match title
edit: here is its link. to see the strange message you have to click on covers

new problem from above mentioned problem. so, the merit badge book that came confused with environmental science- is- emergency preparedness. i will upload link in a moment. but it is displaying this message:
To change your book's cover, select a cover image below or upload your own cover image.
This book uses a custom cover (remove it).
Remove it? so i did- even though that sounds odd to me. but after i changed it to a completely different cover from member upload- it still has the same message. ( and it wasn't a custom cover anyhow- it came from the pool of member uploads )
so confusing

If you enter a book with just the title, no author and no ISBN, it will be autocombined with other books of the same title with no author and no ISBN. The computer can't tell them apart.
Just changing the author wasn't enough. I had to separate and recombine. It does now show the series.

did one of my messages get eaten? i don't see my post of a moment ago about the remove it message

>11 EGBERTINA: Yes, if you look at the change cover page it will ask if you want to change the cover. Custom cover simply means that you chose it from the available covers.
I'm tired. Ignoring this topic.

Thank you. i'm not going to re-post- unless you ask me too, but two messages have disappeared now either you are deleting them or they are being eaten

There have been some recent bugs with posting on LT. I'm not sure if they have all been resolved, but this may be why you are having difficulties posting.

>11 EGBERTINA: "Remove it" isn't meant as a command; it's just presenting the link to remove the custom cover if you want to.

When you add a book you're just adding a single book to your library. The system then tries to connect your book to other books in other libraries that it thinks are the same work. If the system is wrong, perhaps because you're book didn't have an author, then you need to manually seperate your book from that work and possibly combine it with the correct work. There's a group called Combiners! full of people eager to help you with that.

>20 jjwilson61: (We're in Combiners! group already.)

>20 jjwilson61: hello again. yes. someone before stated the same thing- and I didn't want to argue the point- as it is minor. but in fact- it transferred in with all the details. I had to remove them/ alter them, when I was trying to get it to separate from the other book that it believed was identical. it finally, separated, when I removed both of their isbn's. though, in defense of my experience, removing isbn and other info - does not always solve the problem of books that believe themselves to be identical. presumably, the "asin" and other such items that cannot be changed can hold up the whole shebang.
meanwhile, one of the books is resolved, now only one other continues with this message.
thank you
