Search Broken?

I'm seeing some searches fail right now (from both the home page "search your books" and the search box on the "your books" tab). There's also another issue that might be related.

For example, a search of all my collections for "permissionless" returns 0 results, even though I have confirmed that "Permissionless Innovation" by Adam Thierer is in my library. Searching for "Thierer" turns up neither this book nor the other book I own by Adam Thierer. Likewise, searching all collections for "Searle" returns 4 results, including 2 John Searle books, but not "The Mystery of Consciousness" by John Searle, which I've confirmed is in my library.

Possibly related, I'm seeing some weirdness with the links from the relevant author pages. For example, I own two books by Adam Thierer, and the relevant author page says "You have 2 books and 2 works by Adam Thierer." However, clicking on that link then shows only one (Permissionless Innovation) while the other other book (What's Yours Is Mine), although marked as owned on the author page, is missing from the resulting page. There's a similar issue with a missing book when clicking on the link from Searle's author page.

>1 szarka: The first thing to check is which collection you have selected.

Go to 'Your books' and in the top left of the grid (right below the LibraryThing logo) there is a blue selection box. To be sure of finding all books, it must be set to 'All collections'.

If it is, there is a problem. If not, then your searches will fail because the default is to display the books in that collection only when you search or click through from an author page.

I can confirm that https://www.librarything.com/work/15046750/book/199689690 does not get found by search on szarka's catalogue.

It doesn't find What's Yours is Mine because you have the author's name misspelled.

>2 Maddz: Hi, Maddz. As I said, I was searching all my collections, both from the home page and from my Your Books page.

>3 MarthaJeanne: Hi, MarthaJeanne. Thanks for duplicating the bug re: the searches. And thanks for catching my misspelling. It's interesting that it knows I own the work despite the misspelling, and displays that fact on the author page, but then it doesn't show up when following the link to the works I own by the author. But, in any case, fixing my typo (or maybe it was Amazon's typo I copied) solved the issue for that one.

To be clear, fixing the typo ("Theirer" instead of "Thierer") solved the problem with the link for What's Yours Is Mine. But the other work I own by Adam Thierer (Permissionless Innovation) still doesn't show up when I search my collections for his name, and the name is/was spelled correctly for that entry.

>5 szarka: The message on the author page is based on which works you own that are on the author page. (Can also include things where you own a copy not connected to that author.) But the link goes to your catalogue search, so doesn't pick up books that don't have that author name on them in your catalogue.

My books that show on Jean Plaidy are all listed under Victoria Holt so the search for my books comes up empty. I do find them if I start the search from the Victoria Holt page.

>1 szarka: So, the first part of your report was likely catalog indexing issues, which I believe I've fixed for you by reindexing. Many of the missing books were added in the last month or so, around the time of some of our major server changes, so I'm not terribly surprised.

The 2nd part might be another issue: "Possibly related, I'm seeing some weirdness with the links from the relevant author pages. There's a similar issue with a missing book when clicking on the link from Searle's author page." I'm going to write up a new bug report for this with another example from my own library, and post a link to it here when ready.

ETA: actually, I need to double-check and make sure this isn't expected behavior, re: author searches in member catalogs. (The discrepancy is that extra books/works that may be listed on author pages for members are not showing up in their author searches in their catalog because I don't think we're searching for "other" author roles in the catalog search. I need to see if this is a true bug or expected behavior. I think it's confusing for users, regardless.)

>9 MarthaJeanne: Yeah, I saw that. I should have clarified. The others were catalog indexing issues, though.

Okay, discussed with timspalding and posted here: https://www.librarything.com/topic/332657, re: the author catalog searching issues from "You have X books and X works" on author pages.

>11 kristilabrie: Thanks for the follow-up. Yes, I do recall entering a bunch on a day when LT was struggling around that time, so not surprised to hear that a re-indexing was the solution.
