I'm trying to find the name of a book I fell in love with back in middle school.

So it was a book back when I was in Middle School that my English teacher read to us and I can't for the life of me remember it. What I do remember is that I believe it was based during the civil war where a young girl fell in love with a soldier and they used crow calls (or something to do with black crows, they were mentioned) to signal one another.
That's all I can recall at this moment and I really hope I can find it so I can know the ending. The teacher stopped reading halfway through and we never heard the end of it. Thank you to all those who try to help.

Maybe one of Ann Rinaldi's books? She has written several that take place during the American Civil War and many include light romance. It's been ages since I read it, but this reminds me of Mine Eyes Have Seen - set during the run-up to John Brown's Harpers Ferry Raid.
