Childs book - African/amer family. sad child. bird flew off. bold warm colors

My sister and i have been obsessed with finding this book. It was likely published in the early 70's and came to us as part of a book club my mother had signed us up for. My eternal gratitude if anyone can help. There were few details in the illustrations...very blocky with bright red, orange and yellow hues. but it also felt like there was a lot of shadow. The child's bird had flown away and the child was very sad and being comforted by the adult. there was a shadowy picture of the child with the empty bird cage and a bright sky behind. and that's all i can remember.
