Small rant

The newly created "Genre" classification here on LT just assigned "Teen" to ALL the Fantasy books I've got.
I can't even begin to tell them how wrong that is...

Why oh why does everybody associate Fantasy with teenagers? That makes me SO mad!!

Worse, you can't go in and remove it!

I think I see a pencil icon to edit Genre? Maybe they're still making changes? Never noticed GenreThing before. The one book I checked was marked Fantasy.

Edit to add... I get the pencil icon to change the Genre when I'm on the page to edit the work in my library. Hope that helps.

Most of my fantasy books aren't listed as teen. I have 449 fantasy books and 217 teen books - and a lot of those teen books are under young adult or science fiction, not fantasy.

So not seeing the same thing.

Edit: The ones that have both genres are either clearly correct, or books that people argue about but libraries do shelve under YA (like how my edition of The Wind's Twelve Quarters is a YA section discard, it's clearly stickered as such). But yeah people do associate fantasy with children, no arguments against your real point.

Sorry, long day... :/

In the meantime they must have done something to the algorithm, because most of those "teen" tags disappeared...

Yeah it's probably changing rapidly.

I hope it continues to evolve - I checked the YA genre on my bookshelf and there were a couple that I would DEFINITELY not recommend to younger people...

>6 ScarletBea: I'm glad that it was sorted out for you!

>9 Darth-Heather: Meanwhile I'm frowning at how many of the children's books I own are miscategorized as YA. Not-primarily-for-adults does not equal YA.

On the other hand, the genre that I have the most of is overwhelmingly fantasy, so LT's algorithm must be getting something right.

You can absolutely edit the genres:

Add the genre category to one of your library viewing styles from settings.
Then doubleclick in the field and deselect/select the appropriate cases.

If the auto-chosen fields are screamingly wrong (eg erotica in childrens) then please flag it, but if they're just wrong, TIM's asking for us to just change it rather than flag. The system is learning behind the scenes from our changes.

And if it's really annoying you then from the genre view in your books you can turn it off completely.
