I've been binge-watching clips of the West Wing on YouTube. There are a number of occasions when Bartlet picks a book off a shelf in the Oval Office or elsewhere, and then I got to "In Excelsis Deo Jed Goes Christmas Shopping", https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6rF03h20UY, set in an antiquarian bookshop. The President buys:
The fables of Phaedrus (1st ed., 1886).
Lucretius, On the nature of things.
The life of Epicurus (2 vols).
Oh, and Josh says he believes he would eat The adventures of James Capen Adams, mountaineer and grizzly bear hunter of California before he read it. Is it really that bad?
Okay, they were almost certainly props, but fair play to the script writers.
