Printed Music -

I see there is an option for printed music on this site. I have started to test out how to connect sheet music, but I am unable to do so without manually adding each item.

Our attempt is to be able to use this to run our Free lending library for Concert Band Music. We are attempting to offer music to rural and underfunded schools in the way of a loan of a complete score and parts. I love how we can use the site and TinyCat to run as the front end, but with over 660 titles and another 500 on their way, entering manually will not work.

I have tried uploading an excel spreadsheet, but since they are not "books" they are not recognized. Is there a way to do this? Is this more of a request for upgrades to the site?

I was able to find one item and add it to my library, but most of the time I can't find the band pieces.

I add all of my items to my catalog manually (though none of them are sheet music) so I have some tips on manually adding items very quickly.

1) create a browser bookmark/favorite for the manual entry page (https://www.librarything.com/addnew.php)
2) click the manual entry link
3) enter only the title and author
4) click save
5) click the manual entry link
etc.

Fields like "media" and "collections" and "tags" can be added in bulk by clicking the lightning bolt button (power edit) in your catalog. That way you don't have to fuss with finding "printed music" on the media drop down list for every single item you add, you can just select all of your items and change the media one time.

It will still take a lot of time, but I've found that adding the bare minimum of data at first and then editing the details in bulk is much faster. You can also log multiple computers into the same account and have multiple people adding items to the catalog at the same time (just make sure they don't try to edit the same item at the same time)

I would suggest looking through the list of sources for universities with a good music department. If you found two or three sources that had many of these pieces it could save you some time.

Re >2 norabelle414:. To each her own. I also have entered a lot of books manually, and I take the opposite position. Whether I find a source or enter manually, I want to finish each book, checking data, maybe combining... before moving on to the next. You can't really enter publisher, copyright year, other authors in bulk, and I want that information to be accurate.

>3 MarthaJeanne: That is what I do on a day-to-day basis, when I have fewer than ~20 books to add at a time. But when the goal is to get a large number of items added quickly, it can be done faster with a minimum amount of information and then additional information can be added later. Especially since I find it easier to edit items in catalog view than to enter them into the manual entry form (except for other authors which are still a pain).
