August ScaredyKit: Adrift (Stories that take place in Water or Outer Space.)
Horror has a subgenre of outer space stories, but thrillers count for this too. I know there are tons of spooky stories and thrillers that take place on the water.
Let me know what you're going to read.
This list has both horror and a couple of thrillers: https://spookylittlehalloween.com/2021/06/15/ocean-horror-books/
Here is a link to some space horror stories: https://bookriot.com/space-horror-books/

I don't read sci-fi, in general, so am unfamiliar with all the space stories. I think this month's challenge will challenge me. I'm going to go in search of a space saga with no dragons!

I looked at your first list (I didn't see anything on my tbr that really "fit"), and I've added a couple to my tbr, so I'll probably try either:
The Wicked Deep / Shea Ernshaw
or
The Terror / Dan Simmons

>2 Tess_W: Since scaredykit includes thrillers you can pick an adventure that takes place on the ocean or even a non-fiction such as, A Captain's Duty by Richard Philips, In the Heart of the Sea by Nathanial Philbrick, The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger. I hope this helps.
>3 LibraryCin: The lists are just suggestions and as I stated above it doesn't have to be sci fi or horror. The Hunt for Red October is a spy thriller that takes place on a submarine so that is another avenue to look into if you like that type of book.

I am thinking of The Survivors by Jane Harper - I think it will fit as a thriller.

I have been saving up a book for this challenge: The Deep by Alma Katsu.

I'm planning on reading the second book in the Expanse series, Caliban's War. I'm trying to read a ton of space books since I'm drafting a novel that takes place in space for the first time (I've always kept my stories earth-bound before!), but I'll be taking note of the water-based books folks choose so that I can look them up later!

I have the perfectly named book for this month's theme. Adrift by Rob Boffard is a space adventure about a space shuttle that becomes stranded when their home base is blown up by terrorists.

Oh, but I wanted a horror one. :-) And I do use tags to search (whatever combinations I can think of) to try to find ones on my tbr first, and though a few things came up, on a quick glance, I didn't feel like they fit very well.

I think I will try my first Anne McCaffrey, Freedom's Landing for this read.

I think maybe The Willows might work. It's a really old horror story of two men on a canoe trip on the Danube. The river becomes wild and they land on an island for the night but the river keeps rising and the island is not a safe place. The river and other natural elements are highly profiled in this horror story. And it should be a free book as it is "old".

The Terror is on my lists of books to read so maybe I can get to that one.

Has anyone read Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir? I'm wondering if it would fit this challenge.

>5 JayneCM: I have read 2 books by Jane Harper and I love her writing style.
>6 sturlington: Perfect choice!
>7 whitewavedarling: I keep meaning to start that series.
>8 DeltaQueen50: Judy you are always on the money with your choices.
>9 LibraryCin: I look forward to finding what you decide to go with.
>10 Tess_W: Very cool! Your choice will work well for the SFF Kit too.
>11 Kristelh: The Willows is perfect for this challenge. Kudos for going with an older work, but >12 Kristelh: The Terror works well too.
>13 VioletBramble: I think Project Hail Mary would work. Seems a good part of the story takes place in outer space.

I haven't decided what to read for this challenge yet, but I have a few choices.
Rolling in the Deep by Mira Grant which is the prequel novella for Into the Drowning Deep
A House at the Bottom of a Lake by Josh Malerman
Dawn by Octavia Butler
Toxic by Lydia Kang

>14 luvamystery65:, I've read and/or dipped into a lot of space opera/space-set books this year, and this series is my favorite so far!
17Tess_W
I completed Anne McCaffrey's Freedom's Landing and just meh.

>17 Tess_W: What will you do in August?! You will have already finished all the August categories! :)
19VioletBramble
I listened to Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir on audiobook. It was even better than The Martian. I loved it.
20JayneCM
>19 VioletBramble: Ooh, and I LOVED The Martian! I will have to look out for this one - hopefully my library has it.
Yes, they do but there is a long hold list. Seems I am in for a wait!

>16 whitewavedarling: Good to know.
>17 Tess_W: Glad you tried something different. Sorry it wasn't to your liking.
>18 JayneCM: LOL
>19 VioletBramble: It sounds like a good premise and The Martian was such a good read.
>20 JayneCM: I hope you get it sooner rather than later.

I finished A House at the Bottom of a Lake by Josh Malerman. It was more creepy than scary. I've started Rolling in the Deep by Mira Grant. It's another short work, so I plan to read Toxic by Lydia Kang. Want to read both water and outer space.
23Crazymamie
>22 luvamystery65: I also currently reading Rolling in the Deep!
24Kristelh
I finished The Terror by Dan Simmons which was a great surprise. I did not realize how much historical fiction would also be a part of this horror book that I had put off reading for so long because of the cannibalism. The story is very engaging (long though).
I would also add that Barrow's Boys would make a great companion read.

Glad to hear you both liked it. I was considering switching for a different book due to the length, I'm not that interested yet (just started yesterday and am only a couple of chapters in), and it was never on the tbr. I only chose it (over another) for this KIT.

I have finally chosen a book for this challenge. I am reading Float by Jacob Peyton. There is no touchstone for this e-book.

The Wicked Deep / Shea Ernshaw
4 stars
In the seaside town of Sparrow, Orgeon, the three Swan sisters, Marguerite, Aurora, and Hazel, were drowned 200 years ago, accused of being witches. But there was a curse. Every year for a few weeks leading up to the summer solstice, they return and inhabit the bodies of three teen girls. While inhabiting these host bodies, they take their revenge by drowning boys they seduce.
Penny lives on the island with the lighthouse with her mother; her father disappeared mysteriously a few years ago. Just before the big party the night they know girls’ bodies will be taken, a strange boy wanders into town, not knowing what happens there every year. He wants to get a job working for Penny on the lighthouse island. But this is really bad timing for a new boy to come to town…
I really enjoyed this! It was not even on my radar, except that it fit a monthly challenge. Primarily the story was set in current day with Penny and Bo, but there were flashbacks to tell the Swan sisters story, as well.

My book that was entitled Adrift by Rob Boffard was perfect for this month's ScaredyKit. A small group of tourists are stranded in space with no weapons, very little food or water and with an enemy on the hunt.

I finally finished The Deep. Because I really loved The Hunger, I had great hopes for this book, but it turned out to be a disappointment. It is about the historical sinkings of the Titanic and, four years later, its sister ship, the Brittanic, with a few of the same people on board both ships. The story is very slow to develop, with a lot of characters who I frankly didn't really care much about. There is a supernatural element, but I didn't find it all that scary, and there is a bit of a twist at the end, but I liked the twist I made up in my own head better. Sorry to say this was a letdown for me.
