Hi all! I have a job driving about 1.5 hours a day, which means I have more time for listening. 🤪 My goals for the rest of the year are:
The Siege of Macindaw, by John Flannagan
The German Girl, Lily Graham
The Devourers, by Indra Das
Consequences of Capitalism, by Noam Chomsky
A Mother's Reckoning, by Sue Klebold
On Immunity, Eula Biss
The Dictionary of Lost Words, Pip Williams
Evicted, Matthew Desmond
My Sister the Serial Killer, by Oyankin Braithwaite
Moby Dick, By Herman Melville
Sixteen Scandals, by Sophie Jordan
Wish me luck!

Happy new thread, Rachel.
Some of them catch my eye and some of them Moby in particular look a bit on the heavy going side!
Good luck with the challenge and I hope that your driving job is rewarding. x

Thanks Paul! It's just a way to make a little money on the side. Being paid to drive a woman to work. I mainly took it because it gives me opportunity to get paid to listen to an audiobook. 🤪

Happy New Thread!

Happy Friday, Rachel! Happy New Thread. It looks like you have a nice variety of books to listen to.

Happy new one, Rachel! I like your list up top of books you want to get to this year. I just read Moby Dick last year and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
Good luck with the driving gig!

New-thread orisons, Rachel! Hoping for a new week of great reads and peaceful family life, too.

Difficult trying to figure out how many books you have read this year Rachel. Any help you can give me?
19alcottacre
I love the idea of getting paid to listen to audiobooks. I did that for years, lol.

>6 Berly: Do you have a thread, Kim? I couldn't find it and can never get the wiki to work on my phone.

I wrote this on Wednesday. Copy-pasting today. I will update my pictures soon, hopefully. Can't do that from my phone.
Hi all! I have been so very busy lately. I was sick on and off for a while, but haven’t been sick for weeks. I was working 65 hours a week for a while, but am down to 45. Maybe I should keep it that way. It gives me more time for things like this.
I finished one book since my last post: The Siege of Macindaw, by John Flannagan. It is a book in the middle school series The Ranger’s Apprentice. I highly recommend the series to people who enjoy middle school books. It’s kind of a middle ages type of setting.
D11 and her friend got their ears pierced. They were both really brave! It was hard on both because of their anxiety, which makes the fact that they did it a proud moment.
Afterwards, we went axe throwing.
We went apple and pumpkin picking after that.
We dyed D11’s hair, and sprayed the boys’ with temporary spray.
We decorated pumpkins.
The kids dressed up for Halloween and trick-or-treated. D11 was Marie Antoinette, M9 Jason, and IL2 a ninja.
And IL2 got into my makeup.
ETA: I figured out how to do pictures on my phone! This is going to take a while. I'll do them one by one.

Phew! That was a process!
25alcottacre
Yay for the pictures! Love them.
Sorry to hear you have been sick and hope that you are well on the rebound now, Rachel! I suspect that working 20 less hours in a week will be helpful in that regard.
Happy weekend!

That's just way, way too cute of all y'all! I'm glad it's (mostly) been *good* stuff keeping you from wandering through and sharing.
Enjoy the weekend ahead!

>23 The_Hibernator: Gosh; 65 hours a week would be too exhausting to keep up. I'd stick with quality time with your family. It looks like you've all been having fun! And the kids are growing fast.

>24 The_Hibernator: curious what the process is in a phone?…
I tried to upload to my junk drawer and it flipped upside down. And then I could not get it to show up in my thread :/
** nice Halloween costumes - looks like fall fun!

So I was wondering if Melville intended on Quequeg and Ishmael to be in a homoerotic relationship and found an article entitled:
Lovers of Human Flesh: Homosexuality and Cannibalism in Melville's Novels, by Caleb Crain
I haven't read it yet, but the basic idea is that Melville uses "cannabalism" as a euphamism for homosexuality. Yikes! I'm not sure whether to be offended, to laugh, or to nod knowingly.

>29 jayde1599: Hi Jess! I was using html to transfer the picture from my blog to my LT thread. So I'm going to try transferring a picture from my LT junk drawer to here. Give me a moment, then I'll tell you what I did.
Do you use html code? Android or iPhone?

>30 The_Hibernator: At that Puritanical time and in this Puritanical place, it would've been a good dodge. You can see it if you're looking for it, and pooh-pooh it if you aren't.

>31 The_Hibernator: I can manage the basic html code that has been shared over the years on LT. I think where I am getting hung up is how to copy image location on an iPhone. And it is probably super obvious! Lol
36humouress
>35 jayde1599: It's too fiddly for me to do photos on a phone. I do find (on the computer) that I can't just open my gallery and choose a photo to copy. I have to click on it to open it and then copy the address from the address bar. To be honest, things have probably been updated to be more efficient but I learned through experience (and frustration) that that method works, so I'm sticking with it.
Can't help you with orientation of photos though; LT seems to have a mind of its own there. (Usually, rotating the photo on my computer, sometimes through the whole 360º, and saving it again before loading to LT works, but not always.)

A Thanksgiving to Friends (Lighting the Way)
In difficult times
a friend is there to light the way
to lighten the load,
to show the path,
to smooth the road
At the darkest hour
a friend, with a word of truth
points to light
and the encroaching dawn
is in the plainest sight.
Rachel, to a friend in books and more this Thanksgiving

As the old year wanes;
All that now remains
Is to bring you good cheer
With wine, liquor or beer
And wish you a special new year.
