2022 ScaredyKIT Planning Thread

1sturlington
Bewerkt: dec 1, 2021, 7:41 am

Welcome, all readers of scary, thrilling fiction and nonfiction. As in past years, I'll ask for volunteers to host each month and propose a topic. I'll list the hosts and topics below. All categories are game, whether we've had them before or it's something new.

If you're new here, the host is responsible for posting the monthly thread on or about the 15th of the preceding month. In the first post of the thread, describe the topic, and it's helpful to get us started with some suggestions that fit the theme. I'm excited to be reading along for another year with all of you!

January - Haunted Houses (mstrust)
February - Spiders, Snakes, and Other Creepy Crawlers (lowelibrary)
March - Switched (luvamystery65)
April - Serial Killers (Tess_W)
May - Anthologies, Short Stories, and Novellas (DeltaQueen50)
June - Out in the Wild (sturlington)
July - The Living Dead (LibraryCin)
August - Children/YA (Kristelh)
September - It's All in Your Head--Or Is It? (mstrust)
October - Witches, Evil Spirits, and Black Magic (DeltaQueen50)
November - Stephen King and family (sturlington)
December - Holiday Theme (luvamystery65)

Thanks for setting it up, Shannon!

My favorite trope is haunted houses, so I wouldn't mind hosting a month of that.
But what about a month called "Am I Evil?" where the reader can't tell if the issue is one of possession/tormented by demons, or if the character is unhinged? I'm thinking books like Rosemary's Baby and A Headful of Ghosts.

I am up for hosting a month of Spiders, Snakes, and other Creepy Crawlers. This is a topic I haven't seen in my 3 years of ScaredyKIT

I like all the topics posted so far, although we may want to expand the Am I Evil? topic because it may be a little narrow. How about something like "It's All in Your Head--Or Is It?" where it could be anything that the character is either really experiencing but nobody believes them or just imagining. Then books like The Haunting of Hill House and Baby Teeth would also fit.

If you suggest a topic, would you please also specify what month you want? If you don't care, are you all right with me slotting you into the next available month?

>2 mstrust: Are you okay with hosting two topics? Yeah, we have to have one month for ghosts and/or haunted houses, for sure. That's my favorite trope too.

5mstrust
okt 26, 2021, 5:56 pm

Sure, I can do two topics. Can I have September for one topic? Put me anywhere for the next topic.
Yeah, I'm good with expanding the topic to include a character being set upon by demons or ghosts or martians, etc. Sounds good!

>5 mstrust: Great! I put Haunted Houses down for January because ghost stories are always appropriate for winter, I think.

>3 lowelibrary: I put you in February but let me know if you want a different month.

My topic suggestion is for June: Out in the Wild. This topic would include horror and thrillers (fiction or nonfiction) that take place in a wilderness or otherwise remote situation, including survival stories.

I'd be happy to host, but not sure about a specific topic at this point. If others have ideas, but want someone else to host - or more than one idea but only want to host one, please offer up the topic ideas for those of us less creative types to choose from! :-) Thank you.

I'll take March. We can call my theme Switched. Where something is switched, identities, lives, plane tickets (or seats), bodies, houses...

Can I have serial killers for March, please, Alex?;)

Back in the Hey Day of The Walking Dead, IIRC, May was Zombie Month...
Or maybe, "The Living Dead"-- which would include Vampires and Frankensteins (created from dead parts...)...?
Stories that have been adapted to film/TV?

I would like to do anthologies, short stories and novellas in September.

Zombies are actually not as much my "thing", but I like the idea of "The Living Dead" to broaden it a bit.

Are we ok if I'm moving away from May for that one, though?

You guys have been great with the topics! Only 3 more months left to assign.

If you'd like to see a particular topic but don't want to host, just let us know. Someone else will probably volunteer to host it. I don't mind taking on two months myself.

Speaking of which, do you guys want to bring back Stephen King + fam month in November? We always have it, and it's always a favorite of mine, but I can understand if you're getting a little tired of him. :-)

>27 sturlington: I had a hard time coming up with a King for next month, though I did discover a Joe Hill that was on my tbr (I thought I'd caught up!). I guess if others still want the King and family month, I could reread one from decades ago, or maybe I'll have something else added to the tbr by then.

Suggestion for December is Holiday themed story. Doesn't have to be Christmas but there is a lot of Christmas themed stories. We used to do a yearly thread of Christmas themed murder mysteries and I miss that. don't need to host but if we don't have a host next year and someone hasn't come up with a better theme I'll host.

That fills out our year! A couple of us have doubled up, though, so if you have a good theme idea and want to host, just speak up.

Hi, just to let everyone know - it looks like I was scheduled to post July's thread.

I just got home from kidney stone surgery and spent the entire weekend in the hospital waiting for it. My intent had been to work on it over the weekend, then post it this week. I won't have time now to work on it until this upcoming weekend, now, so it will be posted a bit later. Sorry, all! It will come...

I just have more time to work on these on weekends, so I should be ok to get it done and posted then.
