Kids Christmas Book

Trying to find the title of a book I read as a child. It was a children’s picture book, I probably read it circa 1995.

The story takes place in the mountains. It’s centered around 3 brother (I vaguely remember they all had German sounding names). It’s Christmas Eve and their dad goes to town on business (he might have been a cobbler going to repair shoes for troops).

They are poor and they all go to bed in one bed huddled together to stay warm. There’s a knocking at the door and they think it’s the wind at first but it turns out it’s this funny man. He’s short and has a bulbous nose. They let him in.

The man is rude and demands things from them like to stoke the fire (but they have little wood), food (which they don’t have either), and to share the bed (he basically kicks out the kids because he takes up too much space). Eventually he tells them to do funny things like hold their youngest brother upside down and gold coins fall out of his pockets. Food appears too. But when they turn to ask the man if he’d like some he is gone.

The father comes home and finds the boys and the feast and the gold and they tell him the story. The legend goes that the king likes to play jokes and he chooses one house each Christmas even to shower with gifts via his jokes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! I want to get the book for my nice and nephew.

>1 sharky4977: I'm guessing the version you read is The Remarkable Christmas of the Cobbler's Sons, illustrated by Barbara Cooney.
