In 2022 it will be five years since Rebecca (rebeccanyc) passed away. As many of you know, she was an active member here in the 75ers and in some other groups here on LT.
As a tribute to her, I set up a thread in Club Read 2022 with a plan to read all the books she still wanted to read with all her friends here at LT. You are welcome to join, even if you did not have the pleasure of knowing her. Because one thing you can be sure of: Rebecca had exceptionally good taste and read a wide variety of books, so there is probably something for everyone.
You can find the HOPE TO READ SOON: a tribute to Rebeccanyc thread here.

Hi, all, I tried putting out some feelers last year about doing a group or buddy read of Mahabharata with me - maybe not finishing in a year....very informal. I found two people on a Discord group I'm part of who want to join me. I was wondering if anyone here would like to join? I could either try to get them to come over here, or have you join us on Discord. Just putting it out there. 😊

No waitlists on Libby thru the 16th.
No waitlists on Libby thru the 16th.
Nina is a Lipan girl in our world. She's always felt there was something more out there. She still believes in the old stories. Oli is a cottonmouth kid, from the land of spirits and monsters. Like all cottonmouths, he's been cast from home. He's found a new one on the banks of the bottomless lake. Nina and Oli have no idea the other exists. But a catastrophic event on Earth, and a strange sickness that befalls Oli's best friend, will drive their worlds together in ways they haven't been in centuries. And there are some who will kill to keep them apart. Darcie Little Badger introduced herself to the world with Elatsoe. In A Snake Falls to Earth, she draws on traditional Lipan Apache storytelling structure to weave another unforgettable tale of monsters, magic, and family. It is not to be missed.

84madhatta21
hello?
85laytonwoman3rd
Here's a good article about buying second-hand books on-line. I subscribe to Fine Books & Collections, and this link came through my e-mail from them, so I don't know if those who don't will encounter a paywall.
86jjmcgaffey
There was a popup suggesting I subscribe, but when I dismissed that I was able to read the article. Yeah, I've had that happen. I was looking for one specific edition of a book, found it listed, ordered it...and got the more recent, rewritten edition, which I already had. Grr! Got my money back, though, and I don't think I had to return the book (I donated it to the library, probably).
ETA I think that was the seller not understanding the difference, rather than actual malice/cheating, though.
ETA I think that was the seller not understanding the difference, rather than actual malice/cheating, though.
87fuzzi
>86 jjmcgaffey: I've had that happen. I have found that eBay has better return policies than Amazon (marketplace). Once I ordered a hardcover children's book from Amazon, listed in very good condition, and got a stained, bent paperback! I had to argue with the seller who didn't want to refund my money. With eBay I can message the seller and ask them specifics that may not be mentioned in the description. I got the exact edition of Savage Sam that I wanted that way, and I am very pleased.
88ArlieS
I've never had an issue with any of the vendors on Abe Books, though I believe most of my experience came before it was purchased by Amazon. (They may or may not have since decided to bring their acquisition down to the low standards of things run under their own brand name.)
89Kristelh
I've had no issues with Abe Books but I haven't bought direct on amazon used books which is an option. I have run into troubles with people using Amazon to sell their stuff.
90kgodey
>87 fuzzi: With Amazon, it really depends on the seller. The sellers I buy from will refund the book with no questions asked (some will ask for a photo) and no need to send it back. I have a list in my head of "safe" sellers, they're usually the big ones, so I can find cheap books fairly easily.

It's not that The Color of Magic and The Light Fantastic don't have lots of good points, but they are a somewhat mean spirited take down of fantasy up to their time, including some fantasy that was better than those two books, if not unassailable.
