fuzzi’s Looking Forward to Better Vistas in 2022!

As I’ve done here on LT for several years, I'm planning to complete the 75 and 100 books read challenges:

75 Book Challenge thread:
100 Book Challenge thread:

This past year I only read about 50 ROOT books, which meant I fell WAY SHORT of my challenge of 100 but I did rehome about 100 books that weren’t technically ROOT books. Since I still have HUNDREDS of unread books on my shelves I’m going to keep the 100 book challenge because, after all, if it’s easy then it’s not a challenge, right?

My ROOT Progress!!
And here's a ticker for culled rehomed, aka "transplanted" books, read or unread...because finding a good home for a book is important!

Being in Ireland the number of books on offer from ER is much reduced from the total available. I have received a number of good books on the ER programme, but that is the result of being very selective. In the eleven years I have been in the ER programme I have received 20 books. Five were non-fiction, eight collections of stories, and seven novels. One of the non-fiction books was a dud, the others being very good. The story collections had good and bad, as with any collection of stories, but overwhelmingly good. Four of the novels were very disappointing.

The criteria I use for picking ER books is:
- Has it been written by an author I like?
- Has it been produced by a publisher whose work I regard highly, such as Bookview Café or NewCon Press?
- Is the book a non-fiction book that addresses a topic I find interesting.

Talk of ROOT, PGGB, and other such LT/GD acronyms reminded me of the first two weeks in my current employ. I spent those two weeks reading reports and other documents. During that process I was taking note of all the acronyms I came across and built up a glossary in the back of my notebook. When I came across some of them their meaning was explained, or at least very clear. The majority of acronyms were not explained, and I had to hunt down the meanings with my new colleagues. On more than one occasion I found the same acronym used in different parts of the business to mean different things. My glossary had to include the organisational context for some of the entries.

Of course, in my time in the company I have striven to create more acronyms, mostly TLAs, to confuse my colleagues and any newbies arriving in the business. It is so satisfying in a meeting, throwing about TLAs and watching to see who has the courage to ask what they mean. :-)

Oh the POWER! BWAHAHAHAHAH....

That's right, most of them are classified as ROOT books.

A ROOT book is an owned but unread book that has been sitting on the shelves (or e-reader) for more than a year.

My father is almost 94. His cancer is inoperable, radiation isn't an option.

Without treatment my dad has 3-6 months to live.

However, the VA (Veterans Administration) is dragging their heels to approve a biopsy to determine what chemo might help, let alone a consult with an oncologist.

My dad will probably die before they okay any type of treatment. We're resigned to it.

I lost my friend -pilgrim- to the incompetency and bureaucratic ineptitude of socialized medicine, and now it appears I am losing my father to it as well.

>145 catzteach: thank you. I'm sorry they dropped the ball for you, too.

Yesterday I received a phone call about a biopsy appointment, but it's not the biopsy we were told by the oncologist that he needed, and the testing center wants him at the hospital at 7:15am IN TWO WEEKS....two more weeks.

I reminded them that he's almost 94, he doesn't move that quickly, he could make it for a 9:00am. Nope, they need him there at 7:15am, it's part of the protocols I guess. No flexibility, come when they dictate, or go home and die. Just like -pilgrim- :(

I was just listening to an oncologist who I greatly admire, old school, 50 years of experience. He pointed out that all evidence and studies indicate that mortality rates increase quickly if treatment isn't started within 30 days of an original diagnosis of cancer. We're past that now.

Thanks again for your reply. It helps to know that someone gives a hoot.

The promising news I alluded to in post 149 is that we finally got an appointment with the pulmonologist, who will do a bronchoscopy biopsy. That procedure will be a lot easier on an old man and not require he show up at the hospital at 7:00am. And there's another biopsy that can be done at home using a blood draw. The company that does it has shipped the kit to my home and will have someone scheduled to visit with my dad and do the blood draw IN HIS OWN HOME.

I thank my old boss, the oncologist, for helping to make these things happen.

My thought process led me to consider a set of magnetic shapes we bought our granddaughter that went down very well and are very educationa. Since Boots passed on I've noticed several cats passing through the yard. They never did that as long as I had my ferals...TNR does work.

There's one gray tabby that has been hanging around more than the others. I started offering her dry cat food out by the shed, but have now started placing the dish near to the bottom of the porch steps. She (? small and trim, "svelte") has started waiting for her food and mews at me when I open the door. I think she's young enough to at least partially tame/gentle.
