Found: Contemporary romance or mystery about an inherited jewel

I am looking for a book that I read in the mid 1990s that I believe was a romance but could have also been a mystery novel. The female heroine received an inheritance from a female who was, I believe, either a distant relative or someone she saw as family but they were not actually related. People come to take the inheritance because it is a valuable jewel but the female heroine does not know it. She moves into the male love interest's house and while there a man breaks into and tries to kill her by strangling her. She alters the male love interest by hitting the wall. There is a bar/nightclub/speakeasy involved somehow. I remember the book cover was purple, possibly with a jewel on the front.

Sweet Liar by Jude Deveraux? A divorced woman moves into a man's townhouse in New York. Her father recently died and in order to get her inheritance, she has to work with her new landlord researching her grandmother's life. Her grandmother used to be a singer in a speakeasy and supposedly has money from a robbery/massacre that occurred the night she disappeared. After meeting with an old mobster/criminal, another criminal assumed she knew where the money was. Someone breaks in and tries to strangle her at night. She wakes her landlord by hitting the wall with her foot. He breaks into her apartment and saves her.
