Fiction, Set during Ellis Island times. Trilogy?

Hello,
So I have been searching for this book for probably over 10 years. Every now and again it just pops up in my mind. OK so here is what I know or believe I remember:
The first book was read to my class in fifth grade (1998/1999). The teacher started the second book, but never got to finish it, which may be why I think about it so much. I do believe it was a trilogy. The book is Fiction
I am from the USA. Went to school in Pennsylvania.
Book was paperback and seemed relatively thick (for a fifth grader at least).
What I remember about the book is about siblings traveling with their mom on a boat to America. The mom got sick and died while on the boat. There is the oldest daughter who now has to take care of her sibling(s). I believe she has at least a younger brother. They arrive at Ellis Island. She notices that people who are sick are getting taken out of line or turned away so she knows they have to make sure they don't look sick (one of them may be sick?). When she gets to the front of the line they ask her "how do you wash the stairs" and she knew that the answer was "from top to bottom". I also believe that they may be looking for their Uncle, but I'm not sure.
I'm sorry this is all I have. I really hope someone can find this!

Joan Lowery Nixon wrote a trilogy about Ellis Island published in 1992, 1993, and 1994. They were not particularly thick and I don't remember whether the plot of the first book matches what you remember. The first book is Land of Hope.
