Fiction
Set during or just after the gold rush
Plot and everything I can remember Young English woman is orphaned after her father over doses on laudanum. Her father’s solicitor convince her that an American is responsible for her fathers death due to business they were in together when he visited England after making his wealth in gold. She then travels to California in an attempt to ruin the man she believes is responsible. In order to gain the man’s attention she intentionally falls from her horse but get injured worse than she planned.
He rescues her and takes her back to his home to care for her. She remains under his care for a time and during that time he fall in love with her.
They marry and on their wedding night she request that they use a method of contraception so that she doesn’t get pregnant right away.
This she does because she is still planning on getting her revenge on him. Slowly she starts to fall in love with him as they get closer and she no longer believe that he was a fault for her fathers death. He eventually finds out that she was planking to betray him which angers him greatly.
Before he can send her back to England for her treachery they must take a trip and during the trip they are attacked by natives and she is abducted. She is held captive in the natives camp as the leader desires her but she is saved from being rape by the start of her period. Eventually she escapes on her horse but she is shot in the process.
Her husband finds her and takes her back to a abandon cabin he was staying and nurses her back to health.
They are attacked again while she is still recuperating and she shoots one of the men with her derringer.
They make it to the next town where they get new clothes and a hotel room. From here they set a trap for the one really responsible for everything that has happened in a mine. The villain turned out to be her fathers solicitor.
It’s an American romance novel I read in the early 2000’s but it had been out for a while how long I’m not sure but I wouldn’t say older than the 80’s. It was a typical paperback novel maybe half a foot in height or a little less. Other than the basic outline I have given I really can’t remember what it looked like the title or the author. Please help.
