J R R Tolkien's Gandalf is one. A wise old chap, well read, well travelled, a citizen of the world rather than any one country, a font of knowledge when in expansive mood, passionate about justice yet gentle with it, a defender of the poor and weak who always tried to build the capacity of and give agency to others, fond of a pint and a pipe - sounds like good company to me.

A second one would be John Le Carre's George Smiley. Quiet, humble, caring, patient, determined, understated, self-deprecating, quite academic, very clever, not vindictive, taking a long term view, a flawed yet likeable character. I think I'd have enjoyed long conversations sitting by a cosy fire sipping single malt whisky with such a chap.

Amelia Peabody of the Egyptian series by Elizabeth Peters. I have been reading her books because I was planning a trip to Egypt and got back this past Monday. Now, I have seen some of the places described in the books.
