Hi all,

Just wondering if I were to go and purchase all 4 ASoIaF from FS right now, would I be disappointed to find out that they’ve moved the printing and binding to China? Or am I still safe?

The table where the printing locations are stated says they were all printed in Italy.
I would say that it is still the case, but of course that may change as it already has with some other books.
Looking at the table I saw that the recent Dark Materials is also printed in China 😥

It's really a hit and miss. I got the China reprint and I can vouch there are no flaws whatsoever. It looks and feels amazing. On the other hand La Belle Sauvage (printed in Slovakia) has a very tight binding.

>2 woodstock8786: Appreciate the link to the spreadsheet! Didn't know something like that existed -- I'm very new to FS

Somewhat off-topic, but I came across something similar that was used to tracked The Hobbit / LOTR / Silmarillion with some more details:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1s7TgcdmdKg1RDlE_UkZvDlD3gZ691YWMNsrL5jW-...

I happened to come across locally someone selling the LOTR set from second printing 1998 off the bath press. Price is cheaper than the current list price of the set, but from photos it looks like the spines are a slightly lighter color from the covers of the books, not sure if this might be from sun fade/damage? Also because this set is a bit older, the colors are the more muted ones in comparison to the current brighter green ones.

Furthermore, funny that you both mention this about His Dark Materials, but I was contemplating buying a first printing of the His Dark Materials, for somewhere around 30% of a premium of the list price ... but if the Chinese print/bound version is still good quality, I might just do that instead. I'm also still debating whether I just buy the Illustrated versions of them instead for 1/3 of the price ... but that's a different discussion :D

>3 bacchus.: thanks, that is good to hear…I have been on the fence with it for such a long time now. My Lord of the Rings edition sadly has the pixelated print, so I thought this might be the case with Dark materials as well.
Will remain on the fence still, I guess 😅

>4 j3tang: Yes, sadly my LoTR was printed by C&C and the print looks pixelated. It’s not bad, but noticeable and kind of strange…

I guess it’s due to sun fade. I have been hunting for the FS edition of North and South for a very long time and all the recent items had a faded spine.

Sure to be, if it's not just a trick of the lighting, though green isn't usually among the worst colours for fading. My 2001 set still looks as new, then it currently lives on a bank of shelves facing away from the not very large library window and with a board behind it.

>7 terebinth: was there a more muted colored Hobbit and Silmarillion that went with that set? Because purchasing the current versions would probably make them stand out a lot more than the LotR set, wouldn't it?
