This is a middle grade fantasy novel published somewhere in the early 2000s, probably between 2000 and 2014/15. I was in middle school the last time I read this book, about 8 yrs ago. This book is the second in the series (and accidentally the only one I’ve read). It’s about a young girl whose parents are evil muses of some kind, able to bind stories. They want to take over the kingdom by brainwashing everyone, but thanks to a young boy that the daughter meets in the village, they are unable to get her.
The boy gives her a ring with the tree of life engraved on it, telling her to use it when she needs him. She doesn’t know what this means; however, and only takes it out by accident when she is a prisoner of her mother and father. Doing so protects her from their control, allowing her to aid in her parents’ downfall at the end of the book.
Meanwhile, a girl from the kingdom (possibly a princess) teams up with her mother, who is the apprentice to the sorcerer that disappeared years ago, to stage an uprising against the evil muses and to stop them from brainwashing everyone. They are aided in their quest by the same boy that helped the daughter. As it turns out, this boy is the long lost king of the land, one that no one had seen in many years.
The book ends with a big battle and thanks to the daughter, and her parents’ muse blood in her veins, the power is stripped from them and the kingdom is saved. The king brings leaves from the tree of life to help heal those who were hurt in the battle, while also taking his place on the throne. The mother and the girl grow closer, and the daughter no longer lives with the burden of her evil parents.

Is it Story's End by Marissa Burt? I've only read the first book in the series, but this series does have Muses, evil parents, a lost king, and a magical ring.
