I have just received an e-mail from Extraordinary Editions Ltd. (London) with news they have begun production of their illustrated edition of Ebenezer Le Page by Gerald Basil Edwards, published posthumously in 1981. In several circles this book has become a modern classic. They hope to have all copies of the three states (Island Edition, Leather Bound Edition and Exemplary Edition) shipped prior to Xmas and have requested payment and mailing information from current subscribers.

This is the first appearance of 'Ebenezer' in a fine/private press edition and the book design and illustrations are quite to my liking (see link below). If this interests you, new reservations with payment can now be made.

I knew this sounded familiar: https://www.librarything.com/topic/336092

The webpage mentions..
Postage and packing will be between £10 and £12.50 in the UK and Channel Islands (we do not yet know the final weight of the book) all other territories tbc.

Any idea for shipping to the rest of the world?

My e-mail states "If everything goes according to plan everybody should receive their books by Christmas" and payment is required now.

I just completed my order. Martin (I assume it was him) said that he expects me to be the only person in South Dakota to own a copy of the book, to which I had to agree. I'm really looking forward to it.

Is anyone getting the The Exemplary Edition? I'm a bit torn between that and the leather but it looks wonderful and the book, in my opinion, is one of the best books written in the UK in the 20th century.

Paid for my Island Edition subscription as well. This is one of the books I have been most excited for this year.

Just to mention in my last email to Martin on this I asked had the three edition been fully subscribed to yet. His reply was as follows:

"Not yet!
so do please tell people about the book
shortly we will put the price up
as our costs are soaring
and the subscription period is ending"

So anyone on the fence should probably decide soon.

I paid for my leather edition yesterday.

This seems like the sweet spot to me ; paying £250 for leather, marbling, and a gold-blocked slipcase in a tiny edition of 150 feels like quite a bargain compared to say the Folio Shirley Jackson LE, whereas the standard un- slipcased un-leathered edition seems comparatively expensive at £55.

It helps that the book itself is magnificent, of course.

24assemblyman
aug 2, 2022, 9:51 am

>23 red_guy: I would agree on the leather edition being the best value and would of went for it if I currently had the funds, but the standard edition at £45 with a limitation of 350 still seems very reasonable to me.

25red_guy

>24 assemblyman: Oh, I agree. A shame that there isn't a slipcase, though.

>25 red_guy: Yes, I would have liked the option to add a slipcase. I do feel that the whole run is going to be a special book across all the editions.

I have just placed a telephone order for the leather edition, and Martin confirmed that he expects the prices for all three editions to go up 'considerably' once the subscriber orders have been fulfilled. This is understandable, given that the prices were set a year ago. He thinks that the likely date for the price rise will be 1 September. I join others here in urging anyone who is tempted by one of the editions to place an order sooner rather than later.

I just wanted to pop in the thread to say that it was very easy to call from the States and pay by credit card over the phone for this book (having previously subscribed to the Leatherbound edition by email). Martin is a very pleasant fellow, and if you get the answering machine, do leave your callback information, and he will call you back pretty promptly. This was both my experience and that of a friend who is also in the States.

29mr.philistine
aug 5, 2022, 10:36 am

>14 RRCBS: ... they don't do Paypal.

I received an email from Martin a few days back stating that they have setup a PayPal account and can now issue an invoice. Their 'Order' page still does not reflect this update, so interested buyers will have to send them an email requesting a PayPal invoice.

Exceedingly effortless calling from New Zealand, though would certainly have plumped for PayPal had I known it was now an available option.

>25 red_guy: >26 Shadekeep: A slipcase for the Island Edition would indeed have been the perfect combination for me, though the Leather Bound would be superb were my means limitless.

31red_guy
aug 5, 2022, 11:56 am

>30 FitzJames: I suppose there are people who make custom slipcases - I'm sure there have been threads about it here (Etsy, perhaps?) - but probably by the time you've bought one it would double the cost of the book.

32FitzJames
aug 5, 2022, 12:44 pm

>31 red_guy: Quite true, and somehow it wouldn't quite be 'correct' knowing that the slipcase to the leather bound copy mentions "gold blocking" to the cloth.

33Shadekeep
aug 6, 2022, 9:53 am

>28 whytewolf1: I was able to pay for the book through Wise, which I've used for other overseas small presses. Their fee is quite reasonable, and they are a good option when other choices aren't available or don't suit.

34whytewolf1
aug 6, 2022, 6:26 pm

>33 Shadekeep: That's good to know. I've used Wise in the past, so I considered using it to do a money transfer this time, but I ultimately felt it was easier to just call with a card. But as you say, that is a good method to have handy for the future. However, as someone mentioned above, EE can now apparently send PayPal invoices, and that will probably be the easiest option for most.

Received number 3 today, very happy with it!

36red_guy

My copy (no 5 of 350) of the leatherbound edition arrived today, and I have to say it is magnificent. Sumptuous leather spine, a really substantial slipcase with the title matching the spine of the book on its reverse to avoid the possibility of sunning. The signature page is bound in, there is restrained two-colour printing in the text to mark out the passage used for an illustration, lovely hand marbling - and all for £250.

I know comparisons are odious, but they are there for the making, and Folio's loss was our gain. I can't wait for Mr Pye!

>36 red_guy: Congratulations, I'm slightly envious as it did look fantastic on the website and was a bargain at that price, although I'm quite happy with my standard Island Edition (no. 43) which is a lovely production. I may get a slipcase done for it as I think it needs one.

Any US customers receive the numbered version yet?

46Joshbooks1
feb 22, 2023, 8:58 am

I haven't received mine yet. I ordered the Exemplary Edition so maybe that's different? Hopefully the book comes soon. It is such an underrated novel and for those of you who have not read it yet, you're in for a treat. It always amuses me that books of genius such as Ebenezer get such little recognition when there is so much garbage out there that gets acclamation. One of my favorite quotes:

"I always say whatever you do in this life, keep away from doctors and lawyers, or you will end up dead and have nothing left."

I am glad to report that my copy has arrived ("A"). It is so rare that one of my absolute favourite books is produced with such care and attention to detail (and quality) - I was therefore very happy to fully support it and go all out with an exemplary edition. I expect this to sit on my top tier bookshelf for the rest of my days (and be read/enjoyed many times!).
