Welcome to my tenth thread of Two Thousand and Twenty-Two!

The Good: Family, friends, kitties, books, in constantly-rotating order. I continue to use a treadmill 3 times a week, and low-sodium is my new normal. Jenna’s home. She’s regrouping as are so many people her age – it’s pretty tough out there now. She’s a hard worker and Asheville simply didn’t work out for her for a variety of reasons. The job search has started.

The Bad and the Sad: The Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade in a paean to the worship of sperm and control of women here in the US. Ukraine is still a war zone. Queen Elizabeth II has died, and Charles is now King. I’ve always been team Diana, and for some reason having Camilla become Queen Regent really bothers me. It would have been better to allow him to marry her when he was young so I wouldn’t still be upset over what happened to Diana. At least Harry and Meghan got out.

The Ugly: The Gang of Psychos is doing more and more to harm to our republic. Even though I have always disagreed with most of their policies, at least they weren't right-wing nut jobs until you-know-who reared his ugly head.

The encouraging: The overturn of Roe v. Wade may benefit Democrats in the midterms.

I am so glad I’m retired, and am beyond grateful that I don’t have to venture out to work to earn a living ever again. I paid my dues. Every day I don’t work is a cause for celebration.

I read and am a charter member of the Redbud and Beyond Book Club, started in 1997. We’ve established a schedule for May 2022 – February 2023, and I loved the first book. I didn’t finish The Sentence and didn’t finish When They Call You a Terrorist, and didn’t finish The Four Winds. I am President for our local Friends of the Library. I gave my resignation, effective June 30, 2023 at the July meeting. I’ll stay on the Board as Immediate Past President for however long the next President serves, then completely leave the Board and just stay on the Book Sale Team. I’m very leery of a September 23-24 book sale because of Covid and may resign from the book sale team because they seem to think I’ll be permanent cashier volunteer scheduler.

I have been married to Bill for 31 years and am mother to Jenna, 29. As I wrote above, she’s returned home to regroup. The three of us live in our own little corner of paradise on 8 acres in central North Carolina USA.

We have three kitties. Inara – 16, Zoe – 3 1/2, Wash – 2 1/2. Inara’s toe beans, as Jenna calls them. Zoe in the Cutco box and Wash in an Amazon box. Boxes are cat traps, of course.

Jenna with one of her trombones, January 2011.
.

My goal last year was 100 books and I exceeded it by 3. This year’s goal is reduced to 75, but a bodice-ripper-reading streak in May, June, July, August, and early September already has me at 186 books read. My reading mojo has come roaring back with a vengeance. A reduced pages goal made sense, too, but I’ve already read 55K pages.

.

Poetry is not a go-to genre by any means, however, I am going to choose a new poem for each new thread. Back to E. E. Cummings.
may my heart always be open to little
birds who are the secrets of living
whatever they sing is better than to know
and if men should not hear them men are old

may my mind stroll about hungry
and fearless and thirsty and supple
and even if it’s sunday may I be wrong
for whenever men are right they are not young

and may myself do nothing usefully
and love yourself so more than truly
there’s never been quite such a fool who could fail
pulling all the sky over him with one smile

.
2022 – not much better than 2020 or 2021 so far, but in different ways.

Culls. Last year I culled 72. While looking for some books for friend Louise today I saw two very poor quality mass market paperbacks that I should cull... perhaps I can focus on culling unreadable books if they don't hold sentimental or intrinsic value, of course.

September Lightning Round

The Hitman's Guide to Staying Alive Despite Past Mistakes by Alice Winters 8/31/22 9/2/22 Kindle
Second in The Hitman’s Guide series, another joyous romp with Leland and Jackson as Leland’s past comes back to haunt him.
The Sinner and the Liar by Alice Winters 9/3/22 9/3/22 Kindle
The first in a series about the dysfunctional world after WW III, Sin is a broken hearted man, ex-cop, consulting with the cops to keep the streets of Asylum safe. Eastyn contrives a meeting with Sin to gain his sympathy to help him escape the crime boss of Asylum. Interesting take on post-war America, interesting dynamic between Sin and Eastyn. Sin is only a nickname, and he won’t tell Eastyn his real name until the very end of the book. Maddening. Caveat emptor re explicit sex, and an endearing cat named Trident.
Pleasing Master Parker Parts 1 - 3 by Austin Blake 9/4/22 9/4/22 Kindle
Ugh. I don’t know why I continued. Late night lack of judgment. Poorly written, shorthand for every known emotion, sad back story for the dom, barista described as spotty and with a little pot belly suddenly becomes incredibly handsome. Caveat emptor for ridiculously poorly written sex scenes.
Billion Dollar Sugar Baby by E.M. Demming 9/6/22 9/6/22 Kindle
Sweet story of Alex, a very rich man, who hires a sex worker, Wren, and decides to keep him on ‘retainer’. ‘Retainer’ turns into affection, turns into love. Interesting dynamic between Wren and his adoptive family – a friend who took him in when his parents kicked him out for being gay. Caveat emptor re sex.
Lucien: A Dark Mafia Romance by Silvia Violet 9/6/22 9/6/22 Kindle
Logically I shouldn’t have liked this one because of triggers – not personal ones, but Not Good ones. However, I seriously like alpha male dom books and this fits the bill. Reasonably vivid character development, interesting plot twists, and good chemistry between Lucien and Peter. Caveat emptor re sex.
Angelo: A Dark Mafia Romance by Silvia Violet 9/7/22 9/7/22 Kindle
Second in this series, the romance between Angelo and Cameron. Cameron’s newly returned to Boston to take over the family bakery. His father owes money to the Marchesis, and Angelo delivers the news. There’s sparkage, of course. Fun. Caveat emptor re sex.
Devil: A Dark Mafia Romance by Silvia Violet 9/7/22 9/8/22 Kindle
Interesting dynamic between Devil and Joe, a cop. Somehow they end up making it work, and the way they get there was interesting. More sparkage, more fun. Caveat emptor re sex.
Giorgio by Silvia Violet 9/7/22 9/8/22 272 Kindle
First the Vigilance series, with Giorgio hired to protect Lane from a stalker ex-boyfriend. Has some of the same characters from the previous series, and I really liked the character of Lane, cute twink that he is. His cat Muffin is ‘dorable, too. Caveat emptor re sex.
Niall by Silvia Violet 9/8/22 9/9/22 Kindle
Second in the Vigilance series. Niall is former FBI, Gorgio former Special Ops. They are sent undercover to an island posing as a potential partner to a human trafficking operation and his lover. Lots of action. Caveat emptor re sex.
Leo by Silvia Violet 9/9/22 9/9/22 Kindle
Third in the Vigilance series, with Leo hiring twink Ezra as a receptionist at his tattoo shop. Bad guys go after Ezra because they realize Leo cares for him. Caveat emptor re sex.
Xavier by Silvia Violet 9/9/22 9/10/22 Kindle
Fourth in the Vigilance series, with Xavier having to rescue Emilio, their tech guy, after he’s been compromised. Xavier has to navigate his public persona and his secret head of the Vigilance organization persona and his public sexuality vs. his private sexuality. Caveat emptor re sex.
Bought by Rana Drake 9/11/22 9/11/22 Kindle
A man auctions himself off in order to save his niece who has special needs from being sent to a state facility. Caveat emptor re sex.
Mike Bravo Ops: Rogue by Eden Finley 9/11/22 9/12/22 Kindle
Who’da thunk I’d like military stuff? Black ops, male bonding stuff? This is actually the second of the series, read out of order, but that’s okay. Travis West, owner of Mike Bravo Ops, a group of ex-military gay, bi, one straight man and one lesbian, charges ridiculous amounts for whatever requires specialized off-the-books efforts. Enter one-night stand DEA Agent Rodriguez, who has plagued and been plagued by Trav for 7 years. Things change, Rogue needs help, and Trav helps him. Romance follows, along with lots of shoot-em-up and bringing bad guys down. Highly satisfactory. Caveat emptor re sex.
Mike Bravo Ops: Iris by Eden Finley 9/12/22 9/13/22 Kindle
First of the series, Iris and Saint’s story. Iris is a snarky nickname given by Brock a.k.a. Saint, during basic training, and it stuck and is totally appropriate. I Require Intense Supervision – Iris is high maintenance. Saint is rescued from a military op, almost dead, and only the sound of Iris’s voice keeps him in the land of the living. After recovering, he’s recruited by Mike Bravo Ops. Sparkage and romance and etc. How can you not love a book with a K-9 program dropout named Princess Smooshy Face? Even I, no dog lover, wish I could meet her. Caveat emptor re sex.
Fake Out by Eden Finley 9/13/22 9/14/22 Kindle
Straight guy pretending to be gay needs a date for his ex-girlfriend’s wedding. Predictable outcome, but pleasant getting there. Caveat emptor re sex.
Undercover by Eliot Grayson 9/14/22 9/14/22 Kindle
FBI agent goes undercover, meets cute young man whose family is under suspicion. Sparkage, HEA. Caveat emptor re sex.
Pop Star by Eden Finley 9/14/22 9/15/22 Kindle
Prequel to the Mike Bravo Ops series, with Brix assigned to protect a pop star. Lots of backstory on Brix, the bodyguard and on Harley, the pop star. There’s a good mystery about how a stalker keeps finding out where Harley is. HEA and caveat emptor re sex.
Defiant by Max Rowan 9/16/22 9/16/22 Kindle
Jayden and Lucas hook up. A year later, Jayden’s been ousted from the board of the company he inherited from his dad. He’s also been outed as gay and now has gotten death threats. Enter Lucas, hired as his bodyguard. Sparkage, bad guys, etc. Caveat emptor re sex.
Try by Ella Frank 9/16/22 9/17/22 Kindle
Sexually promiscuous Logan is attracted to bartender Tate, coming off a divorce with the vicious Diana. Logan piques Tate’s interest, sparkage, feelings. Vivid characters, good secondary plots. Backstories hinted at. First of a six-part series about Logan and Tate. Caveat emptor re sex.
Wicked Heat by Ella Frank 9/17/22 9/18/22 Kindle
First of a duo, Ryan is waiting at a bar while a friend has a date and is harassed by a drunkard. Bar owner Jon asks friend Jameson to ‘rescue’ Ryan. Personal assistant raised in affluence in Chicago meets firefighter raised on the streets in same? Takes a while, but a series of coincidences and interest create a sweet romance that’s continued in Wicked Flame. Caveat emptor re sex.
Wicked Flame by Ella Frank 9/18/22 9/19/22 Kindle
Second of a duo, Ryan and Jameson continue the romance and sparkage and make some good life-altering decisions. HEA and caveat emptor re sex.
Inside Affair by Ella Frank 9/19/22 9/19/22 Kindle
First of a trilogy, Ryan’s boss Alexander, ‘Xander’, is being stalked. His boss requires him to have a bodyguard, so he goes to his best friend’s brother, a CPD detective, to get a name. Sean has just taken time off after a difficult case, so decides that only he can adequately guard Xander. This one bothered me a bit because once there was sparkage, Sean couldn’t concentrate as well as he should have. Violence ensues, but there’s a HFN ending. Caveat emptor re sex.
Breaking News by Ella Frank 9/19/22 9/20/22 Kindle
HFN from above, Sean and Xander have been rejected by Sean’s brother/Xander’s BF. Sean helps Xander with the emotional fallout from the violence in the above book so they’re personally good, but it really bothers both of them that Bay won’t even talk with them. The book basically ends on this note. Caveat emptor re sex.
Bad Intentions by Ella Frank 9/20/22 9/21/22 Kindle
Xander’s boss Marcus and Gabe’s story. Sweet and fun – I don’t usually go for age-gap romances, straight or MM. This one works however, because of the shared passion of classical music and of course sparkage. Caveat emptor re sex.
Good Intentions by Ella Frank 9/21/22 9/22/22 Kindle
Satisfying end to Marcus and Gabe’s story, with several heavy-duty themes happily resolved. Caveat emptor re sex.
Dare You by Ella Frank and Brooke Blaine 9/22/22 9/22/22 Kindle
First in a trilogy about Bash, eccentric cross-dressing CEO of a tech firm and the firefighter who rescues him from a burning building. Sparkage, miscommunications, etc. Caveat emptor re sex.
Dare Me by Ella Frank and Brooke Blaine 9/22/22 9/23/22
Second in Bash and Kieran’s story. Lots of funny banter between Kieran and his brothers, banter between Bash and Kieran, too. Caveat emptor re sex.
Forbidden Mafia Prince by Brook Blaine 9/23/22 9/24/22
First in a duo about Domenico and Luca. Caveat emptor re sex and emotions about having to hide being gay.
Sinful Mafia Prince Truth or Dare by Ella Frank 9/24/22 9/25/22 Kindle
HEA for Domenico and Luca. Caveat emptor re sex.
Married to the Mobster by Leighton Greene 9/25/22 9/26/22 Kindle
What’s with me and gay Mafia stuff recently? Anyway, Finch is a wild thing cruising the gay scene in NYC. He saves the life of wanna-be mobster Luca who’s been roughed up in an alley with the bad guys coming back after him, they connect, then go their separate ways. Five years later Finch is kidnapped. Luca owes him for saving his life in the alley, and etc. Caveat emptor re sex.
Beloved by the Boss by Leighton Greene 9/26/22 9/27/22 Kindle
Second book about Finch and Luca. Lots of fun mobster stuff, violence, mayhem, and love. Sparkage, too, deep family emotions, surprises, and, of course, caveat emptor re sex.
Enticed by the Enemy by Leighton Greene 9/27/22 9/28/22 Kindle
Third in the series, a book about Morelli Boss’s UnderBoss Angelo and an FBI agent who are both on the run after a set up. As I was reading it I was somewhat disappointed, but am now thinking that it was better than the 3.5 stars I gave it. Ah well, my first impression star-wise is what I almost always go/stay with. The big mystery is how old Angelo is, since we know that Bax is 24 and there is definitely an age gap. They are both brave and strong, which is what I seem to enjoy reading lately. Caveat emptor re sex.
Seduced by a Sinner by Leighton Greene 9/28/22 9/28/22 Kindle
Fourth in the series, a book about bodyguard Teo and ‘not-yet-a-priest’ Aidan, who is a friend of Finch’s, from above books. Aidan is going to be ordained a priest in Boston, Finch’s bodyguard is assigned bodyguard duties for Aidan. Interesting dialog about how to best serve God, whether Aidan should become ordained. Also lots of organized crime violence and interesting plot development of series-related subplots. Caveat emptor re sex, which pretty much gives the ending away. Oh well, the ending was never in doubt, just the journey in getting there.
Ghost by Joel Abernathy 9/28/22 9/29/22 Kindle
The best thing about this book is the series of ironies and interesting plot twists, although the story of sociopath Echo and deeply closeted Enzo, heir to an organized crime family, is interesting. Echo’s personality reminds me of Dexter, although instead of disposing of people who deserve it, Echo disposes of people for the money and secret satisfaction. Caveat emptor re sex, but it’s truly a very minor part of the book. I only give it a 3* rating because it could have been fleshed out much more but still in keeping with the basic plot. I’d have been happy to read another 100 pages…
Devil by Joel Abernathy 9/29/22 9/30/22 Kindle
Second in the series, about Enzo’s brother Valentine and Echo’s brother Malcolm. Some aspects are not for the squeamish. I latched onto the interesting psychological parts and interesting plot twists. Caveat emptor re sex.

Are posts welcome yet? Shall I bugger off? I wanted to delurk and say I enjoyed your opening post on this new thread.
I agree thoroughly with your sentiments regarding that ahem, Person, we in Canada have to tolerate as head of state. I despise and detest his wife for her lack of morals and ethics. The hubs says it takes two to tango, so I suppose the label of "atrocious behaviour" is deserved for the pair of 'em.
And go for it, release thyself from the slavery of FoL.

Thanks re my opening post - I usually start working on it when a thread reaches about 250 posts and have fun picking pics and changing the good, bad/sad, ugly, and now, encouraging.

I would have never considered releasing myself from the FoL before now, and am getting more and more comfortable with the idea of completely releasing myself.

Great review of Washington: A Life post 248 your last thread.. Ive never been tempted to read much political biography, but Washington sounds much more interesting than what I was taught in school. :)

>10 SandyAMcPherson: Well, perhaps the new KoE and his consort have sexual morals somewhat less than ideal, but I doubt much worse than bog standard for 20th century, and it's not my place to judge, as I was able to choose who I finally settled with after finding a number who just wouldn't do. I was never a Diana fan though, never saw much there and positively hated her taste in wedding gowns. The 80s didn't offer many good options though.

>1 karenmarie: Re: the Royals. I have been strangely moved this weekend both by losing the Queen whose constancy in public service and her a-political stance was a rock the Commonwealth was able to rally around. I was also impressed surprisingly by Charles III whose speech to his subjects was well done and moving.
I think though that when the reality sinks in the monarchy may come under closer scrutiny in coming years and the new King must do his very best to stay out of politics. Bermuda has already called for a referendum on retaining the Monarch as their Head of State and to declare a republic. It isn't up to me but I would support that.

I am against the monarchy in principle but in practice I did very much feel the loss of QEII.

By the way I will be surprised if Camilla is taken to the hearts of the people as she still gets the blame (not entirely fairly for Diana) - the test will be when there is a national crisis or one of the Royals makes a major faux pas.

>23 PaulCranswick: Bermuda has already called for a referendum on retaining the Monarch as their Head of State and to declare a republic. Having lived in Bermuda for a little while I’m surprised at that. It always seemed much more pro-monarchy than the U.K.! They even had a bank holiday for the Queen’s birthday. To be honest, while I can totally agree with Caribbean countries wanting to be a republic, in the case of Bermuda, it is so very, very tiny that I would have thought it would do well to retain any connections with a bigger country that it can get.

Good morning, Karen. Six for me wordling today, and I was grateful for that. I haven't been particularly sharp these past few days.

I read and enjoyed the Washington bio and liked your review too. I've been hesitant to pick up any of his other monsters although I have his Hamilton and Grant.

I know I'm in a minority, here, but I'm truly not much affected by the queen's death. I admired her response (as much as I've seen of it) in WWII, but I look at ALL THAT MONEY and think that she could and should have done more with it. I cared enough to google 'QE2 foundations philanthropy' and found one medical center in Nova Scotia. I'd be happy to be corrected. I am, of course, sympathetic to her family.

And I'm very happy that you get to read and hang with Jenna! (((((Karen)))))

>29 LizzieD: - I join you in the minority, Peggy. Her life of service is admirable, of course, but many people lead lives of service without all the money and perks of the royal family. That said, I don't envy them having to live constantly in the public eye. But again, it's not like they are having to do it while also worrying about paying the bills :-P

Your book numbers are staggering, Karen. Here's to bodice rippers or whatever... Haha. Still, you are reading those history books which balances things out nicely.

I envy you waking up in the morning and getting to have a chat with your daughter. These are special times for both of you. I do hope you start getting more sleep at night. I could not function on 6 hours. My Calm app is my friend at night. I have been walking the Pacific Crest Trail the past few nights (by proxy). >29 LizzieD: poking my head in to provide information about Queen Elizabeth's philanthropic efforts. Here's an article from Barron's with a snippet:
Queen Elizabeth Leaves a Powerful Charitable Legacy
The queen was a patron or president of more than 600 charities. According to research done by Charities Aid Foundation in 2012 in celebration of queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee, the 60th anniversary of her accession, she helped raise more than £1.43 billion (US$1.66 billion) for charities she was a patron of.

Similarly, Charles and William both have foundations. If you really want to go down a rabbit hole (I didn't), you can research the Royal Family's charities and patronages here:

>28 richardderus: Hiya, RD! Yesterday’s word was amusing. I was surprisingly sad/depressed/drained for most of the day, with no real cause that I could figure out. Yes, there are things that are bothering/upsetting me, but nothing to explain why I was feeling the way I was. Anyway, today seems to be better so far on the emotions front. I did train a Square volunteer for the sale at the Library and took Gentleman Jack as a volunteer book for my many forced hours spent so far on this sale.

>29 LizzieD: Hi Peggy. Thanks re my Washington bio review. I just went down the rabbit hole of Grant and bought a used ‘very good condition’ audio book on Amazon. Looks like I need more Chernow.

I am not affected deeply by her death, more irritated that by the fact that Charles is now KCIII. I can understand your not being truly affected by it. I, too, admire some of the things she did, hated what she did to Margaret (according to what I’ve read/seen in documentaries and TV miniseries). She had a fine balance to maintain with her husband and being queen. Having snarked about Charles in >1 karenmarie:, I’ve been impressed with the few snippets of his speeches and the pomp surrounding QEII’s death and services for her. I know that as soon as I see Camilla I’ll roll my eyes.

I had a pleasant time with Jenna. She has a Zoom interview this a.m. with a construction company to be a receptionist? Admin assistant? I’m not clear. It’s in Holly Springs and the first interview she’s gotten out of dozens of resumes sent/viewed on LinkedIn. She’s going to Zoom on her phone, which seems to be normal for ‘youngsters’. Hugs back to you, my dear friend.

>30 katiekrug: Hi Katie. Living in the public eye seemed to work for Elizabeth. I’m glad Harry and Meghan got out because it didn't work for them and glad that Edward VIII abdicated in 1936 since he was so venal and under the thumb of Wallis. I shudder to think what their Nazi sympathies would have done for the UK and the world during WWII.

>31 alcottacre: Hi Stasia, and thank you. It had its moments of marvelous although I was in the slough of despond for part of the day.

I still haven’t read Abandoned in Death, and will wait for Desperation in Death. Thanks for the reminder though. And the title of #56 is Encore in Death.

>32 Donna828: Hi Donna! Bodice rippers, extreme romances, whatever – I’m still firmly in the genre. I am reading other books, true, but haven’t opened any of them in 4 or 5 days. The pressures of the book sale are making me retreat to my comfort zone.

Seniors still officially need 7-8 hours of sleep per night according to what I just read, but between sleep and the occasional nap, I seem to be fine these days. I had terrible knee/hip/calf pain earlier in the year which I’ve gotten under control with quarterly steroid shots in my knees and serious leg braces that I use when needed. I’m glad your Calm app helps. I’ve used the occasional app or video to help with sleep.

Last night, though, I got 9.5 hours of sleep, with only one interruption about an hour in when Bill called upstairs to tell me commercial power was back on. I had made him promise to tell me when he was going back outside to turn the generator off AND to take his cell phone with him because his walking has become pretty unstable, so after about 20 minutes of wakefulness after sleeping hard for an hour, I went back to sleep ‘til 7:45. Jenna could have done this, but he was insistent. With children and husbands, I’ve learned to pick my battles.

>33 lauralkeet: Thanks for the info, Laura. It is fascinating.

>34 johnsimpson: Hi John, and thank you. We’re all doing mighty fine and truly only have a few first world problems. Sending love and hugs to you and Karen and serious kitty skritches for Felix.

>35 weird_O: Why thank you, weird_o. Jenna and I were just discussing Wayne’s World the other day – more specifically the scene where Wayne prances around in his underwear while Tia Carrere is on the phone. I think we need to watch it again. And re my reading, I’m simply on a tear through a series of new romance genres. I’m surprising myself but going with the flow.

>36 Whisper1: Thanks, Linda.

>37 LizzieD: I’m seriously thinking I will make 200. Part of me’s extremely proud, part of me is “REALLY Karen? Smut/soft porn/romance?” However, I’m taking advantage of Kindle Unlimited (finally) and learning how to deep dive search for the kinds of things I’m currently enjoying. I’m looking at Mutual Admiration Society right now. It was a birthday present from friend Karen in Montana. Thank you for the thought, though. I’m still working on Pilgrim, The Federalist, Angle of Repose. I’m floundering around with audiobooks – have checked two out of the Library but am not enamoured. I’ll probably just wait for Grant to show up, supposedly Sept 21-26.

>38 msf59: ‘Morning, Mark, and happy Tuesday to you. Yay for good weather. We’ve got gorgeous blue skies, high humidity but with a promise of low humidity this afternoon. I’m excited for the Maiden Voyage of the Camper. I hope the Rehab duties go well, and enjoy the books. I’ve got Cardinals. Just Cardinals right now.

Good morning, Karen. Glad things feel better......... lower humidity helps! Congrats on a good night's sleep too!

Four for me too this morning.... another day when using my favorite second word produced nothing positive. "They" say that using the letters you have rather than a second word like mine is a more challenging way to wordle. You did it!

I'm pretty happy to be in the better books, or at least not the Nathan Lowell rereads right now. I'm really feeling the pull of The Hands of the Emperor for rereading when I should go ahead and read The Return of Fitzroy Angursell, but I'm hoarding it and find myself wanting Kip again. Then I am out of their range, Karen, and not even a senior ;-)

For some years now I have myself on a strict regime of 6 hours sleep. If I sleep only half an hour more, the next night I am not able to fall asleep, if I am lucky I get a few hours of sleep in the early morning. As long as I keep it at those 6 hours, all is fine.
My mother had the same, going down to 4 hours a night in her seventies. When she got Alzheimer's, she went back into the 'normal' range of sleeping hours.

Hi Karen, Sending out new thread greetings! Enjoy your lunch today with Jenna and your time with her in general. My son was home with us for a week in August between moving, and it was lovely to visit breweries and lunch spots and actually go to a movie with him while he was home, not to mention just being able to sit around and chat. I agree that it can be hard for twenty-somethings out there today and wish Jenna luck in her job search. >58 Copperskye: Hi Joanne! Thank you. See below re our lunch out. I’m glad you had some time with your son in August. Jenna and I have been having a wonderful time overall, with specific stressors every once in a while, rarely between us but frequently when her dad says or does something that is completely tone deaf. Sigh. This is getting more frequent and frankly bothers us both.

We’re still seriously hunkered down because of the pandemic. This is mostly me, so going out yesterday was somewhat of a bit deal. Yay for Chris substitute teaching and tutoring in Long Beach. If it’s Long Beach CA my niece/wife/2 kids live there and of course being from SoCal I remember how lovely it always was. >61 FAMeulstee: Hi Anita. Yes we did, see below.

>62 msf59: Hi Mark, and sweet Thursday to you, too. Sounds like a solid day/plan before your trip.

Jenna and I left about 10:45 for an early lunch. Frankly, I was somewhat worried that the inside seating would be crowded, which gets my spidey senses going re Covid. However, when we got there, we were literally the only people inside, eating or ordering. We ordered, sat in a somewhat-isolated corner, and had a wonderful meal. Jenna had broiled seasoned salmon over rice with a side salad, I had a Greek Salad with broiled seasoned salmon. She’s never been to Taziki’s before and loved it. After that we wandered over to Rocky Mountain Chocolates. I did not realize that it is a huge international chocolatier. We bought some treats for the Librarian to go with a bottle of wine I’ll be giving her as a house warming present – she is divorcing, moved out of the family home, has an apartment, and will be moving into a sweet little townhome this week. I also bought treats for the three of us.

Today is working out on the treadmill, a few Friends tasks, and reading. Since the CDC has our county at low Covid risk, I might make a masked journey into the local Habitat store.

Hi Karen - thanks for mentioning the CDC Covid by county website. I wonder how many people are actually reporting their positive at home Covid tests right now. My county and Missoula county to the north are listed as moderate - I know half a dozen people who have had it in the last few weeks, but thankfully, all minor cases. A friend returned from Scotland yesterday with Covid - so perhaps a different strain in the mix now. They tried to avoid all the queen-lying-in-state crowds, but that could well turn into a super spreader event. I don't believe I've heard that possibility mentioned on the news.

The fourth paragraph, and one particular sentence in The Federalist No 41, written by James Madison, in my copy of The Federalist, edited by Jacob E. Cooke.
January 19, 1788

To the People of the State of New York.

It cannot have escaped those who have attended with candour to the arguments employed against the extensive powers of the government, that the authors of them have very little considered how far these powers were necessary means of attaining a necessary end. They have chosen rather to dwell on the inconveniences which must be unavoidably blended with all political advantages; and on the possible abuses which must be incident to every power or trust of which a beneficial use can be made. This method of handling the subject cannot impose on the good sense of the people of America. It may display the subtlety of the writer; it may open a boundless field for rhetoric and declamation; it may inflame the passions of the unthinking, and may confirm the prejudices of the misthinking. But cool and candid people will at once reflect, that the purest of human blessings must have a portion of alloy in them; that the choice must always be made, if not of the lesser evil, at least of the greater, not the perfect good; and that in every political institution, a power to advance the public happiness involves a discretion which may be misapplied and abused. They will see therefore that in all cases, where power is to be conferred, the point first to be decided is whether such a power be necessary to the public good; as the next will be, in case of an affirmative decision, to guard as effectually as possible against a perversion of the power to the public detriment.

Every man who loves peace, every man who loves his country, every man who loves liberty, ought to have it ever before his eyes, that he may cherish in his heart a due attachment to the Union of America, and be able to set a due value on the means of preserving it.
I've bolded two phrases because they apply to the present day more than other times in our history, to my way of thinking.

Hi-ho, Karenmarie! Hope your library's book sale was successful at both reducing sale-book inventory and in taking in a lot of $$$ for your library.

Bethlehem's library had a sale last week—it's always Wednesday and Saturday. I attended both days and I've reported (on my thread—which is, by the way, one of the best-kept secrets on LT) on the rather many books I was privileged to save from...ummm...well, not the shredder or the inferno, but from pining on the shelf until the next sale, dreaming about being plucked from obscurity and boredom by some unknown avid reader. Why...someone like me.

I finished that book I was reading. I've started reading another one. And so it goes.

Have a week full of fab.

Hi-ho, weird_o. "Hi-ho" reminds me of a story about my grandmother when she still had her house in Cedar Rapids. My grandmother's last name was Holets. There was a family next door last name Buckmeister. The youngest child would always greet my grandmother with "Hi Ho!"

The book sale is this coming Friday and Saturday. At the end of the sale, every single item will be donated to the 3 PTA Thrift Shops in the county and we will, finally, after 2 1/2 years, start accepting donations again.

Yay for finishing a book. Yay for starting another. And so it goes. I love the reference to Slaughterhouse Five. It might be time to read it again.

Morning, Karen. As you can tell from over on my thread, we are back home and our maiden voyage was a success. We sure needed that first time under our belt. I have a lot of running around to do this AM, into early PM but I want to kick back and catch up on some reading after that. I also need to tend to some empty bird feeders.

I hope you had a great weekend.

Hi Mark! Welcome home, glad the maiden voyage was a success. I saw the pics on your thread. Power through the errands then enjoy reading and feeding the birdies.

I'm not sure it was great, but it sure was at least Very Good. I ended up with the following books from working the setup and having one of the senior members of the book sale team tell me to take whatever books I wanted from the Philosophy/Religion section and throw some money in at the sale. I will do that tomorrow, Wednesday, and Thursday, since there are some choice books donated by a former member named Leonard on Jewish history/studies/religion.

Here's what I brought home:

From Leonard's donation:
Jewish Holy Scriptures - prepared for use of Jewish personnel of the Army of the United States, United States Government Printing Office Washington: 1942. This may have actually been Leonard's, but at a minimum it was a member of his family's.
Haikus for Jews by David M. Bader
The Gospel of Judas ed by Rodolphe Kasser, Marvin Meyer, and Gregor Wurst. Bonus: additional commentary by Bart D. Ehrman, James A. Gray Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Complete Works of Josephus in ten volumes, published by The World Syndicate Publishing Company

The Subversive Copy Editor, for reporter friend Karen in Montana - volunteer book for working
In a Dark, Dark Wood by Ruth Ware - was going to be donated to Thrift Store, somewhat ratty trade paperback but I do love Ruth Ware

friend Rhoda, to be donated back to the Friends for book sales when finished
The Hummingbird by Kati Hiekkapelto
The Legacy by Yrsa Sigurðardóttir
Dead Joker by Anne Holt

drneutron mentioned on Katie's thread that he had lunch with Rafael Nadal and his wife recently - well, actually sat at a table next to Rafa/wife. This was interesting for two reasons: first, because not being a Nadal fan I didn't realize he was married, and second, because it reminded me of the time that I had dinner with Tar Heels Coach Dean Smith.

And actually, it was my 40th birthday when I was then 8+ months pregnant with Jenna and Bill and I had a table next to Dean Smith, his wife, and two daughters. This counts the same way as Jim's lunch with Rafa/wife.

Lynchburg library doesn't accept donations, but the Amherst library system does so a few days ago I drove 12 miles up route 29 to unload a bunch of books. Amherst is a cute little town with a main Street that has largely evaded the developer's blighted touch. I briefly considered buying the old bank as a primary residence, but a) I didn't have the money and 2) the bank vault is still in place and fully functional and with my claustrophobia I had a lot of bad dreams about being locked inside. Plus, I'd have to put in a kitchen.

Hey hey, Karen, it's a happy day. Suddenly. Mistah Trump is officially being taken to court over his business practices. WaPo reported late this morning:

New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a lawsuit Wednesday accusing former president Donald Trump, three of his grown children and executives at his company of flagrantly manipulating property valuations to deceive lenders, insurance brokers and tax authorities into giving them better rates on bank loans and insurance policies and to reduce their tax liability.

The suit asks the New York Supreme Court to bar Trump, as well as Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump and Eric Trump, from serving as executives at any company in New York, and to bar the Trump Organization from acquiring any commercial real estate or receiving loans from any New York-registered financial institution for five years.

It seeks to recover more than $250 million in what James’s office says are ill-gotten gains received through the alleged deceptive practices. While the lawsuit itself is not a criminal prosecution, James (D) said she has referred possible violations of federal law to the Justice Department and the IRS.

May this be the first of many many suits filed, both civil and criminal, in many jurisdictions.

May I propose a toast to the fearless attorney general, a black lady, setting an example for all.

But of course I wouldn’t want to get locked up either, because I’m claustrophobic, too.

I stayed cool. I did have to go out twice today, though – first for workout and Library, then when I got ¾ of the way home and realized that I needed to get the cash for the FoL book sale and a special dinner to celebrate Jenna’s job.

Oops. It’s temp to hire but she gets insurance from the temp agency and then from THC. She starts Monday. Ah, you’re welcome re the BB. And congrats on Wordle in 3. I took 4 again just now, but now I’m doubling down on NOT using words that aren’t in the list of 2,309 and NOT using words already used. I'll simply say to you and Judy and anybody else who is interested that if I were to find an African ancestor and a Jewish ancestor in my DNA, I'd be over the moon. Me, too. We’re all the result of who came before, obviously, and if you go back far enough there’s bound to be somebody different than every single white, Christian, UK, French Huguenot, and/or Bohemian ancestor I’ve so far identified. Solid, motivated, hardworking folks, since they came over early in droves then moved west into territories and barely charted areas. I got a major genealogy boost last year when I connected my Pomeroys to Eltweed Pomeroy, one of the first Pomeroys in the US, and I want to continue that research.

>125 msf59: Hi Mark. Happy Saturday. I’m glad you had a good time at the zoo. Good luck with the volunteer effort today – we’re just two LTers out volunteering, eh? Yay for PM books. I should be home by 3:30 today – the second/last day of the sale is today and then I’ll be able to relax for the first time in many months.

>126 m.belljackson: Hi Marianne. Good point. We’re all from somewhere else and all have roots in Africa. Of course I think Mar-a-Lardo would be just a teensy bit upset to be faced with the true nature of things, as would his right-wing white supremacist friends.

>127 richardderus: Hiya RD. I had volunteers show up, bought a few books (and I truly mean only a few – story later this weekend) and had problems with some of the tech that iPhone users had to use to process credit cards. Why the hell did Apple take away the microphone jack? I knew this was a problem, bought some of the dangles that were supposed to work, and they didn’t. I got home about 5:45 last night, so had reasonable time before today’s final lunge at the finish pole.

>129 ffortsa: I’ll respond to this a bit better later this weekend, Judy; suffice to say one of my dearest friends is a Cohen although her dad changed the name in order to keep it simple for prejudiced people in the theater in NYC in the … 40s?

We hope Jenna likes the job, too. The only things about the commute Jenna isn’t thrilled with are getting up pretty early (7:30 a.m. start, 45 minutes away) and the cost of gas. She has a Kia Forte, though, so gets decent mileage.

Coffee, about 20 minutes reading, then show time. I’ll catch up with y’all, probably tomorrow.

It makes me appreciate Dav, keeper of the cash boxes and reconciler of revenue. Dav's family had a medical emergency and he couldn't be there yesterday.

Yay for spending time with Sean and Jack as Bree had fun with her cousin.

Morning, Karen. Happy Sunday! Glad you survived your busy day yesterday and you have a much less busy one today. I had a nice lazy afternoon with the books yesterday afternoon. I also enjoyed watching my feeders. I ended spotting 12 species, which was a nice surprise and it included a pair of cedar waxwings, that were perched in a tree nearby. First time visitors. Go Panthers! Go Bears!

No, not because I've been warbling my fool lungs out about it...not because of the Pulitzer campaign and the IMPAC Dublin Award nomination kerfuffle...just because 'twas free.

Yay Panthers! Yay Bears!

>136 richardderus: Hiya, RDear. I miss my mind - I don't remember you recommending Toot and Puddle: Charming Opal. Jenna had Toot and Puddle so when I saw this one, I snagged it. You are brilliant, and a discerning reader, and the bestest. Just the bestest. Abject apologies...

The calm before the storm - chili in about an hour. More foosball although I'm not much interested in any more games. Reading, relaxing, then more Travelers, which we are really enjoying, even if some of it's puzzling.

Enjoy your well-earned day of rest at your empty nest tomorrow, Karen. Good job with another successful book sale under your belt. Our library has almost $170,000 to spend on special program thanks to the second-highest sale last week. I went towards the end and it was still crowded with lots of books left. I only bought two so shelving them was not a problem.

I hope Jenna gets used to her early commute and that she likes the new job. Fall seems like a good time to initiate a change in routine. I have certainly gotten busier as some of my groups have started back after the summer hiatus.

>143 msf59: Hi Mark, and thank you. Jenna’s first day went well. It’s a job, it’s administrative and support to the manager of the Lighting Group. She liked the people and the easy-going-but-we-need-to-work vibe. She just left for Day 2. >148 johnsimpson: Hi John. Yes, she was beginning to get antsy and wanting to start recovering financially so that she can eventually get her own place again. The weekend was busy but good, yesterday was busy with stuff I liked to do even if the TV was on in the background.

>149 LovingLit: Hi Megan. It’s always worse when you get most of it then plow through too many options. Three books is wonderful, especially since you weren’t expecting one. What craziness! I’m going to call my GP’s office today to see if they want me to get my flu shot at their office on October 31st when I go for my annual exam or get it earlier at a pharmacy.

Today’s Wordle was 5.

>155 richardderus: Tasks done, visit with Jan a success, and the only solitude was in the car and on the blasted treadmill. However, today, Jenna just left for work and Bill’s already dressed and getting his lunch packed. I live in hope.

>156 streamsong: Hi Janet, and thank you. I’m very pleased with my haul. It turns out that Leonard would like to have the Sephath Emeth back, and I have his address in CA from his daughter. I’ll pack it up today, finish packing back up a defective audiobook of Grant to return to Amazon, then take everything to the PO tomorrow. Yes, we’re going to be experiencing a bit of rain from Hurricane Ian on Friday. Of course, if it changes course, we could dodge a bullet or get even more. You never know ‘til it gets really close.

Yay for your three in Wordle. I'm a good steady 4 with gusts up to 6 and occasional misses. Me, too.

>157 witchyrichy: Oh yes, Karen, although I didn’t get to shop first thing because of some Very Irritating technical difficulties with one of my volunteer’s not setting up Square correctly (even with detailed instructions). 45 minutes after the start of the sale I finally got to begin, but by then was so frazzled that I got no joy. Jan’s a wonderful person. Enjoy your lunch today with your fellow retirees.

And Bill’s left. Jenna left. It’s just me and the kitties. Coffee, a bit of LT, a bit of reading, a bit of straightening the desk, a bit of cataloging my haul. I might make Peggy’s soft oatmeal cookies recipe today, once I take the butter out to get to room temp.

>164 figsfromthistle: Thank you, Anita. I had a wonderful time yesterday – see below.

>165 quondame: Isolation and sweets. You got that right, Susan.

>166 LizzieD: Oh, Peggy, they’re wonderful. I followed the recipe exactly, as I always do the first time – I only left out the walnuts because I was too lazy to go to the garage to get them out of the freezer and then chop and toast them. Next time. And Jenna asked what I’d do differently, and the only thing I’m going to try is 1 tsp of non-sodium ‘baking soda’ instead of the 1,240 mg of sodium in the regular stuff. It made three dozen, so ~53 mg sodium each, including the calculation for about one cookie’s worth of dough I just ate because… cookie dough. Is there anything special you do?

I’m sorry you’re having trouble with your pharmacy. Mine’s doing mostly okay, although I had to call them to check on a prescription that I told them to fill via reply to a text message that they never then replied that the prescription was available. I only had to wait on the phone about 5 minutes before a pharmacist told me it’s ready for pick up.

Your county and mine are both medium Covid risk right now according to the CDC. Cases in my county are up 31% in the last 14 days. Cases are down 11% in Lee County, where I'm going today to pick up our taxes and have lunch with some former/retired coworkers.

And Ian is tracking further east, although it looks like we’re both in for some severe weather of one sort or another. I hope your river doesn’t flood, although it looks probable.

My aunt by marriage moved to Port Charlotte FL in February. They’re all hunkered down in daughter’s cinder block/rebar/steel shuttered one-story house. She said she’d text me this morning if she can. I feel sure they’re safe although it pretty much hit them dead on.

>167 FAMeulstee: Hi Anita, and thank you. Oh yes, I puttered and read and baked cookies and cataloged my book sale acquisitions. Jenna’s at work, Bill’s home, but I’m breathing easier for my time to recharge yesterday.

Jenna seems to like her job. The commute is pretty much without traffic although it is 45 minutes each way. Good people who enjoy joking but getting the work done, good physical environment, nice mix of being up and about and sitting at her desk.

>168 msf59: ‘Morning, Mark, and a very sweet Thursday to you, too. I’m glad you’re getting Jackson time. My feeders are currently empty. I guess it’s before Second Breakfast. The hummingbirds will be leaving soon, but I still have a fresh feeder out. I was 5, and I understand that the wherewithal to do that kind of processing doesn't happen until we turn 6. Or maybe I was just slow. And guess what! My copy of Lost Christianities has come, so I'll be ready to read it with you if you ever decide that you want to - but maybe not in October....

Hope your hatches are well-battened. We're supposed to get only tropical storm winds - 55 mph gusts- and 3.5 inches of rain. We really, really need the rain. I hope the forecasters are right. Stay safe and dry!

>173 witchyrichy: Thanks, Karen. I hope you stay safe, too. Looks like it’s going to stay here longer, through tomorrow. It’s already raining solidly, with the first outer bands having arrived overnight. Jenna left for work half an hour ago because it’s month end and they didn’t tell her to stay home. Bill's boss made it optional to come in today, so Bill's staying home. It also looks like I'll miss my third treadmill workout this week, as it really doesn't make sense to go out in this mess. Sigh.

I captured this off a live-stream video on WRAL. The eensy blue checkmark, to the left of Raleigh, is where I live.

>174 LizzieD: Wow, Peggy, stressful for you in first grade. I don’t remember how old I was when I learned to tell time. I also only remember one clock in the house – on the kitchen stove – although my Dad had to have had a clock in the bedroom to get him up for work because my dad was NOT a morning person.

Yay for Lost Christianities. Maybe November? I’m still very, VERY stuck in romances right now. In fact, I haven’t picked up Pilgrim or The Ink Black Heart in over a week, and have only posted one Federalist paper in longer than that. But I get to do what I want to, so I’ll continue until it doesn’t make sense to continue. I might even open one of the above mentioned books today.

Jenna did most of the work of getting the porch furniture upside down and the porch swings immobilized. Bird feeders are in. Kitty door will stay closed all day, meaning stir-crazy kitties. If we lose power, we’ve got the generator. Depending on where I look, we’re supposed to get 3-6” of rain, with possible wind gusts of 50-60 mph. Minor risk of tornadoes, as Ian will downgrade to Tropical Storm status. It keeps tracking further east, though, bring it closer to home. I hope you, your mama, and your DH stay safe too.

The ninth and tenth paragraphs in The Federalist No 42, written by James Madison, in my copy of The Federalist, edited by Jacob E. Cooke.
January 22, 1788

To the People of the State of New York.

It were doubtless to be wished that the power of prohibiting the importation of slaves, had not been postponed until the year 1808, or rather that it had been suffered to have immediate operation. But it is not difficult to account either for this restriction on the general government, or for the manner in which the whole clause is expressed. It ought to be considered as a great point gained in favor of humanity, that a period of twenty years may terminate for ever within these states, a traffic which has so long and so loudly upbraided the barbarism of modern policy; that within that period it will receive a considerable discouragement from the federal government, and may be totally abolished by a concurrence of the few states which continue the unnatural traffic, in the prohibitory example which has been given by so great a majority of the union. Happy would it be for the unfortunate Africans, if an equal prospect lay before them, of being redeemed from the oppressions of their European brethren!

Attempts have been made to pervert this clause into an objection against the constitution, by representing it on one side as a criminal toleration of an illicit practice, and on another, as calculated to prevent voluntary and beneficial emigrations from Europe to America. I mention these misconstructions, not with a view to give them an answer, for they deserve none; but as specimens of the manner and spirit in which some have thought fit to conduct their opposition to the proposed government.
Madison believed slaves were necessary for the Southern economy and opposed it intellectually. He wrote what he did above in order to sway the Southern states to ratifying the Constitution, but his behaviors were all in support of slavery.

Adams plucked ideas from the air and pinned them to the page, layering in the moral dimensions, whipping up emotions, seizing and shaping the popular imagination.

Deeply idealistic—a moral people, Adams held, would elect moral leaders—he believed virtue the soul of democracy.

Smithsonian, October 2022, by Stacy Schiff
Regarding the second one, I don’t think we’re a moral people anymore, especially the Gang of Psychos. And, a BB! I’m going to pre-order the Audiobook of The Revolutionary: Samuel Adams as soon as I get my Amazon/Chase credit for September, so free audio book, due out October 25th.

>210 Whisper1: Hi Linda. I’m sorry you, too, have a sleep pattern that leaves you up late and dragging around the next day. Have never tried them. I hope you can get a good sleep pattern going again soon, dear one.

Madison was a slaveowner and Southerner, so his belief was self-serving. As was Jefferson’s, and Monroe’s, and many Southern Revolutionaries. Washington, too, was a slaveholder directly and through Martha’s dower slaves, too, although he seems to have been conflicted by slaveholding.

>211 msf59: 'Morning, Mark, and happy Tuesday to you. Wow. Bike rides and toddler parks. He is growing up. Yay for another camping trip. I don't know much more about Baker Mayfield than he joined the Panthers late in training. This is from Wikipedia:
Mayfield set the rookie quarterback record for passing touchdowns, along with ending a 19-game winless streak for the Browns in his debut. His most successful season was in 2020 when he led the Browns to their first playoff appearance since 2002 and victory since 1994. However, due to inconsistent play and conflict with Browns management, Mayfield was traded to the Panthers in 2022.

Bill always works from home on Tuesday/Thursday, and so is still sleeping. Jenna left at 6:40. so it's been quiet and will continue to be quiet for a while.

Today's rather busy - I have a chiropractor's appointment at 10:30 and will probably work out after. Then Miss Inara Starbuck has a vet appointment at 2:40. This will be the first time I'll be able to go in with any of our kitties since the Pandemic started, so it will be exciting to actually be in the same room as Dr. Cindy. Inara has lost weight, has a strange new meow, and her right ear had something going on with it when I scheduled the soonest-available-not-emergency appointment. Old kitty although not ancient. She turned 15 in June.

Good morning Karen. Nice Wordling today, especially given the results of your starting word. I also got it in 3 and was pretty pleased. It gets my day off to a good start!

I like the idea of a solo hotel getaway. Another LT friend of mine has been known to do that from time to time and it has worked wonders for her well-being. Good luck with the vet appointment; it does sound like there's something going on there that needs attention. Fingers crossed it's easily and quickly treated.

>228 karenmarie: Sciatica not once, a few years, I think four or five. The time in between it got shorter through the years.
It took a while to find a solution, I tried PT, a chiropractor, consulted two back specialists etc. The last specialist was the one who told me it would go away by laying flat two weeks. It was caused by a bulging intervertebral disc, which showed on a scan. By laying flat it could go back to it's original form, as there was no weight on it. And PT after, to strengthen the lower back muscles.

I hope the vet visit with Irina goes well.

>234 LizzieD: I got everything done, Peggy, and my back was grateful for the chiropractic treatment. Last night I took 2 oxys for aand although it took a while to get to sleep, I slept ‘til 8 a.m. Thanks re my retreating. I’m trying hard to take care of myself. Jenna’s helping – when I went upstairs last night she’d re-made my bed (I am one of those people who don’t make my bed unless I’m changing sheets), put Ants the Anteater Beanie Baby Kindle prop snuggled in the arms of a Winnie the Pooh I got at Disneyland in the late 1980s AND heated a corn bag and put it in the bed.

>235 FAMeulstee: Ah, understood, Anita. It’s so wearing to try to find the right solution sometimes. I’m glad you finally found it.

Inara pouted on the way to the vet. They fawned over her and gave her treats. They did blood work, gave her an exam, and the vet tech cleaned out her right ear while I held her wrapped up in the towel. They could see the healed abscess and there's nothing wrong with her ear now. Dr. Cindy said she looked good for a 15-year old kitty and that all the things I'm worrying about are just normal at that age. She doesn't expect anything unusual from the bloodwork, but will call when they get results and she's had a chance to look them over. She did suggest a natural medicine, which is in a soft treat, to be given once a day, but frankly, at $40/month, I'm not sure I want the expense or stress of trying to get Miss Inara to eat the medicine/treat once a day. I'll talk about it with Dr. Cindy when she calls re the blood work.

I'm really glad you got some sleep last night and that Inara checked out OK.

I join you with some sleep problems lately. I don't go to bed until about 1 and then wake up for at least an hour after a couple hours of sleep.

I try to stay in bed for 8 hours, even if I'm just dozing. Cree cat however insists on getting up between 7 & 8 a.m. running up and down the halls, galloping up and down the stairs, jumping off things and yowling his deep 'emergency, emergency' howl. The first few times he did this, I got up and checked to make sure he didn't have a mouse that had wandered in from the outside. Nope, no mouse. Food bowl fullish. Check. Just wants morning company as far as I can tell.

And congrats on your Wordle in 3. I seem to be going the other direction, and scored another 5. But .. today I still had three other options, and only 2 guesses left, so I won't complain too loudly.

>237 LizzieD: ‘Morning, Peggy! Another day, and when I worked, another dollar. Now that I’m retired, it’s another book.

My daughter is definitely a keeper. She's funny and caring and definitely a mommy's girl. Last night’s sleep was interrupted but with a couple of solid 2-3 hour chunks. I got up with the alarm at 8:40, have had coffee, and Jenna was in a chatty mood first thing. She’s now watching Premier League men’s soccer with her dad.

I’m always happy when I get Wordle at all. Today’s effort is a 4. “Self-Concept.” I’m working on refining and better understanding my self-concept, too. Some of my recent behaviors and thoughts are less than exemplary. Sigh. Nothing major like murder, blackmail, etc., but I could definitely be a better human being.

>238 lauralkeet: Congrats for your 3, Laura, and thanks re Miss Inara Starbuck.

>239 richardderus: Bill was home yesterday, so was here when Alex came. Alex and I have already had the discussion of him being able to come in when I’m not here. I trust him, and he’d probably be happier if nobody was here. As long as there is a prioritized list of what to work on this cleaning and a check for the end, we’ll be good.

It all worked out. I got home about noon, Alex left about 2:30. 3 hours, lots of good stuff done. Alex, like many but not all men, does not see dirt the same way most women, and I, see dirt, so there’s always something little that I could ding him on. However, I value reliability and the 95% satisfaction I get with each visit. I’m not willing to go behind him and check out every nook and cranny, never have been with any of my house cleaners over the years.

>240 streamsong: Hi Janet. Thanks. It’s a relief about Miss Inara. The vet is pleased. Sleep is compromised again because of the Bakers Cyst, dammit, and I have to wait ‘til October 21st for steroid shots in my knees. I could go to the walk-in ortho clinic and get the fluid aspirated out, according to the doctor I saw a week and a half ago, and if it gets much worse, that’s probably what I’ll do. 13 days is looking like a long, painful slog right now.

I’m sorry you’re having sleep problems, too. It’s absolutely no fun at all. I took some serious pain meds again last night. I hope you have something to help you along – pain or sleep meds.

I’m laughing about the deep ‘emergency, emergency’ howl, although to hear it while in bed has to be majorly irritating. It rates right up there with cat puking sounds. Nice that he wants company, but he needs to be mindful of when human mommy’s in bed. Wordle in anything is a win, in my book, although I complain about 5s and 6s, too.

>241 PaulCranswick: Well. *blinks* I’ve never thought of my Escape as a euphemism before, Paul, but this new revelation affords me some amusement. Thanks re the weekend, and I hope you are having a lovely one, too.

Hi RD.

I qualified my statement with many men and most women - my opinion, of course. Interesting that you see it as a caring vs. technical skills issue. My brother was, when he lived with me in 1987 in California, obsessive about cleaning things thoroughly. Bill, not so much, giving things a lick and a promise.

Yes for my lunch - I'm hungry, having only had coffee and a glass of OJ this a.m. so far. Small grilled chicken salad, w/tomatoes and olives (salt indulgence, yes), no cheese, (salt denial, yes), and O&V dressing.

>253 LizzieD: Hi, dearest Peggy! Yay for 4. I’ll have to take your word for the Grade A Gray Day, because I had new symptoms from the Bakers Cyst – swollen ankle, smallish lump in my calf – so went to Urgent Care pretty early. However, Urgent Care was not accepting new patients (!!) because they were slammed and understaffed. I asked if there were any other close Urgent Cares and they said no, but that I could go to the Chapel Hill ER or the Siler City ER. So I schlepped to the Siler City ER, getting there at 11. They took me back at 3:40. I was now paranoid that it was a blood clot, so they did a d-dimer blood test, which came back in normal range for the protein that indicates blood clots, took an x-ray of my right knee just in case they saw something, and re-concluded that it was the Bakers Cyst. They gave me some diclofenac sodium topical gel. It seems to be helping some, and I’m still going to take oxy again tonight.

Fun Monday, eh? I got home at 6:45. Jenna had some dinner ready for me, and now I’m in jammies and heading upstairs.

Your poor thumb joints. If I don't think about it before I try, I can get the joint to release by steadily pulling on it. Surprisingly, I was able to do that yesterday in the ER. Guess my body was more worried about other things.

>258 Familyhistorian: Hi Meg. Not pleasant at all, but now I'm not worried about a blood clot and feel like I got excellent care, once they actually got me back there. I love our 'little' hospital. It's only 10 miles from home, and except for me having to go to UNC Chapel Hill when I had the STEMI heart attack last November via ambulance (and about 95% of which I don't remember,) we've been able to go there instead for preventative, surgical, and emergency situations.

I've decided to forego the treadmill this week unless guilt consumes later in the week and I make the foolish decision to go. I was originally told that exercise helps with a Bakers Cyst, but we'll see. Heart health vs knee pampering. 🙄

>259 lauralkeet: Hi Laura, and thank you. This health shit just makes me crazy. I hate whining and feel like that's what I'm doing. However, pain in the 6-7 range at night, even with oxycodone, isn't any fun.

When I moved to NC in 1991, Bill's Dad was 62 with debilitating knee pain and extremely high but managed blood pressure, MiL#2 Kay had Crohn's Disease, and Bill's Mama, MiL#1 Anne, had already had a heart attack and also had extremely high but managed blood pressure.

Talk always revolved around health, which was just something I NEVER heard with my parents, who, also in 1991, had health issues. They just didn't talk about them unless I needed to know about a major surgery or something else potentially catastrophic. As an example, my mom and dad visited us 3 months after Jenna was born, and I only heard 6 months later that my dad had been diagnosed with macular degeneration that summer, before they visited.

And now that Bill and several friends of his have major health issues, guess what gets discussed? Health, the healthcare system, Medicare, and etc. This is the only place where I whine about my health.

Jenna was not pleased when I only told her about being in the ER when she was on her way home from work, at 4:40. So from now on I'll text her at work if her dad or I are at the doctor, urgent care, or the ER. Lesson learned. One of us will call if it's an emergency, otherwise an informative text is necessary, from her point of view. and for her peace of mind.

One of Judi's uncles would mail a "Christmas letter" to a long list of folks each year, and most of it would report every damn ailment he and his wife had experienced since the previous missive. Judi HATED his routine mention of "The Wife." I did hear that lady's name uttered from time to time, but darned if I can remember what it was. "I have a name," Judi would snap, "and it isn't 'The Wife'."

Hi Bill. Ugh. A Christmas letter of medical woes AND calling his wife The Wife. Judi is a woman after my own heart. My dear husband calls me 'Wifey-poo' sometimes, and refers to himself as my hubby. Both names irritate the crap out of me, but it would hurt his feelings to tell him this, so I refrain and love him anyway. 🙄

Last year's Christmas letter did report my heart attack. The previous time I wrote a Christmas letter that reported medical issues was Bill's bypass surgery in 2002, although I may have reported Jenna's broken scaphoid bone. Regardless, each report was only one paragraph out of an entire letter.

Oh, Karen. I'm sorry that yesterday was so maddening. I do so wish for better nights for you and days when it's not a choice between heart and knee. I wasn't prepared for ageing as something that was going to happen to me. I seem to have been convinced that I was going to live forever, but I wasn't going to get old. I also thought that I was a rational person. Meanwhile, I love Jenna still, and she is right!

A lot of conversation among my Five Fine Friends and me used to revolve around food and food prep. I'm convinced that when we eventually get together again, it will be about our health or lack thereof.

I was livid when an acquaintance of my DH had tried calling for some time before dropping by. DH had been on the phone with a bee-keeping buddy for all that time. When he got there, the man said, "The little woman can certainly talk, can't she?" DH had to hold me back from physical attack. He quickly said, "I've been on the phone."

>265 LizzieD: Thanks, Peggy. I was mostly scared because it didn’t seem like my symptoms were still those of a Bakers Cyst. Although the x-ray was questionable in my mind, the d-dimer blood test was something I’d never heard of before and now know about re blood clots.

Interesting about how you perceived yourself and ageing. Live forever, but with no health issues –that bit’s hopeful, not irrational… Re Jenna, I didn’t report on the stink eye she gave me last night when we discussed how … surprised… she was when I called from the ER. However, she went into take-care-of-Mom mode the rest of the evening and I basked in it.

The upstairs microwave broke – I don’t remember how old it is, but at least 5 years, probably 6 or more. I took advantage of Prime Early Access Sale and got a replacement for $80 off and it will be delivered tomorrow. I use the upstairs microwave for corn bags, an absolute necessity!

I hope you and your Five Fine Friends can continue with discussions of food and food prep instead of health.

‘Little woman’ is another condescending phrase that makes me ill. I bet your DH had to hold you back from hurting the acquaintance.

Yay for Wordle in 4.

>266 richardderus: The first Bakers Cyst I had was a piece of cake compared with this one, RD. Doctor gave me a steroid shot and wham! No more pain or discomfort. This one’s had a chance to grow because I can’t get another steroid shot ‘til October 21st. I can probably get it aspirated at the Ortho Clinic when I go there on the 21st but am not sure. I just left a message.

Jenna and I are square.

>267 streamsong: Thanks Janet. The closest three Urgent Cares couldn’t take care of me. Monday? Unplanned staffing issues? Long-term staff shortages? Who knows. The hospital I went to is only 10 miles from home, so at least there’s that. The Urgent Care receptionist and I didn't get into any details about why I wanted to see them, and even then can't imagine that he would have suggested the Ortho Clinic. I was actually comforted by the fact that I was at MY hospital, that I was familiar with, and that Bill and Jenna were only 10 miles away.

I did not get good sleep last night except for the first 3 hours on oxy, and with the microwave broken I couldn’t easily re-heat corn bags – would have had to go downstairs. Upstairs pain was less than downstairs pain/hot corn bag would have been.

I just looked over the after-visit summary, which says that I need to keep the ortho appointment on the 21st. Duh. I think the ultimate resolution is two fold – aspirate the fluid now, then plan on a knee replacement next year (already on the radar of the cardiologist and ortho clinic). I just need to not get another one between now and then. Or a recurrence of this one.

>266 richardderus: UNC Orthopaedics just called and I have an appointment to get the cyst aspirated on Monday the 17th. Even if that prevents me from getting the steroid shot in my left knee on the 21st, I'll still get the steroid shot in my right knee. Regular old arthritis pain in my left knee is better than the pain from this cyst.

It's a wonderful early fall day here in central NC with 44F now, going to a high of 76F. Daughter off to work, kitties fed and cat door opened, and coffee is being consumed.

Morning, Karen. Happy Wednesday. I picked up Juno right away, after my volunteer duties. She was a good girl for Bree, but she had one bad incident, chewing the corner of an end table. We feel BAD. It looks like an all day rain here, so it will keep me off the trails. I am getting the itch to get out, though. Enjoy your wonderful fall day.

'Morning, Mark, and happy Wednesday to you.

YIKES to Juno chewing a corner of an end table. I'm sorry she had that terrible lapse. Our kitties scratch furniture, unfortunately, and Wash licks EVERYTHING - walls, floors, tables, rims of glasses that then have to be immediately retired to the kitchen, books, printers, etc. We figure he was a snake in a previous life, since that's how they smell things.

Sorry about the all-day rain there in Chicagoland. You're just going to have to spend time reading, eh? 😉

The new microwave arrived last night about 8:20 or so. Jenna schlepped it upstairs, where we cleared a space on the desk, set it up, and tested it for 2 minutes on ... a cornbag! I used it several times in the night. It's quieter than the old one and there are several one-button times that make it easier to get it started.

Lunch with friend and Librarian Rita today. I still haven't tackled the pile of papers in the Sunroom, so might make a project of it.

In the meantime, coffee, Wordle in 3, and daughter safely off to work.

>281 richardderus: This reminds me of a song called "Caffeine Overload Polka." A few years ago I sang in a feminist choir. We did a lot of serious social justice type of music but liked to work something fun into our concerts. If you Google the title you'll find recordings. It was a fun song in general and even better for coffee lovers.

Morning Karen! I'm glad the new microwave was up and running without a hitch.

>286 msf59: Hi Mark, and I do hope your Thursday was sweet. Yay for birding pals, and I can’t wait for highs in the low 50s. We’re at 47F now and will get to74F. Clear, beautiful Carolina blue skies. I do love this time of year - early fall with winter to come, my two favorite seasons.

>287 richardderus: I hope Valerie Day was special, RD. I’m going to keep most of the smooches for moi, with one each for Jenna and Bill. *smooches* back to you

The new, quieter First World Microwave is a joy. I used it quite a bit last night. I hope your yesterday was a wonderful.

>289 SomeGuyInVirginia: Hi Larry! You must be visiting because I was thinking of you yesterday. You missed nothing more than dready medical stuff, which I try to keep at a minimum these days. Alas, it sometimes intrudes.

>290 Whisper1: Thank you, Linda. I wish it did, too. Of course, I do have a connection for illegal marijuana, but have never been good at inhaling. *smile* Thanks re the new First World Microwave.

>281 richardderus: Hi Anita, and thank you. I can understand getting caught up in your catalogue. It’s something I do on occasion, too. Having books is fun and LT's cataloging feature has made me happy since October 1, 2007.

Jenna’s gone off to work and won’t be home ‘til late Saturday or, more probable, Sunday. She had promised some friends to dog sit before she got her job, was unhappily reminded of her commitment last wee, She is a woman of her word, so will drive there straight after work today. It’s 3 ½ hours one way, then 2 hours or so when she comes home.

Quiet day planned since doing pretty much of anything isn’t a lot of fun right now. Too bad I don’t have any books to read…

I'm very glad to see you posting this morning, dear Karen. If you hadn't, you would have gotten at least a text if not a phone call. Yesterday was fine although my state of mind was sad as I watched some of the Parkland shooter's penalty phase and the Jan.6 hearing. So much sadness and pain and fury! Otoh, my DH made a pound cake for me, and I had and have wonderful coffee to wash it down.

By all means, rest today. Maybe you can find an unread book somewhere in the house.

Oh! Wordle in a legitimate 4 for me today. Go, streak, go!

Karen, I'm sorry to hear about your latest health issues. I'm glad you ruled out the blood clot, but the pain sounds like it's keeping you from doing stuff. Thank goodness you don't need healthy legs to read books!

When you mentioned your microwave, I tried to remember how long our old clunker has been operating without a hitch. We've been back from CO for almost 23 years and I think it moved out there with us, so it is at least 31 years old!!! Now I've jinxed it and will probably have to replace it next week. I won't even mention (shhhh) how long we've had our Maytag washer and dryer. ;-)
