I've read John Fox, Jr.'s The Trail of the Lonesome Pine when I was a teenager, and later saw the movie of it too, distinguished mainly by the fact that Spanky MacFarland of the OurGang comedies played the kid who gets killed late in the story.

I just found this group. What a fun idea! Anyway, for this year I've read none on the list but own Peter: a Novel of Which He Is Not the Hero, which I will read one of these days.

I collect and love old novels. Their language generally sparkles as today's writers have absolutely no clue.

I just finished reading The Man from Brodney's, and though it was at times tedious, there were sentences that were worth the effort, particularly at the beginning.

Though I have a couple more of this year's titles, I've only read (and re-read) The Shuttle, which is a good description of a lady in the making. That's another plus for the old books - you get to see real character development. The characters in this era were very conscious of choices which would help or hinder their efforts to becoming better people. They are a worthwhile crowd to spend time with. We can still learn from them.

I've started Peter; a Novel of Which He Is Not the Hero at one time and remember it to start as a comical presentation of the boy-man, on the order of Penrod. I'll have to dig it out and finish it.

Not enough time to get to all of my darlings.
