I have posted a few times in Name that Book, but am going to post here too, in the hopes that somebody can help me identify it:
Mid 20thC British novel: widow falls in love with a ghost
I read this in Mold library when I was in my teens/twenties (so between 1971 and 1984), and I remembered it as A Shilling For Candles by Josephine Tey. But when I got that out to reread, I found I was wrong. I would love to find it again, if anyone here can help...
I'm pretty sure it was written in the same period as Tey was writing: the style of writing was certainly from between 1920 and 1965.
The heroine is a quiet little woman, who has recently been widowed. I think her husband had been somewhat overbearing and she had been typical of 1920s/30s women in putting his desires before any of hers. She thinks she is supposed to miss him, but she doesn't, and is just realising that she can now have her own life.
She visits (I think she drives there in a little or old car) a stately home in England and joins the guided tour of the rooms. For some reason she is left behind in a bedroom with a fourposter and falls asleep on the bed. She wakes to find a man in the room; he turns out to be the ghost of an English nobleman (maybe a duke) whose house it had been. He was 17th or 18th century, or possibly Elizabethan. I'm sure he wasn't from earlier than that, and he was definitely not later than 1820.
Unfortunately I never read any further, so I don't have any other details.
It is definitely NOT The Ghost and Mrs Muir, The Dancing Floor, Sir Rohan's Ghost or Tryst, which were kind previous suggestions.
