-------INFORMATION ABOUT TIOLI CHALLENGES:--

What it is: It’s a way to expand the kinds of books you are reading within the 75 Books Challenge and give you a way to share your books with others.

What it's not: It’s not just another challenge to add to the long list of your other challenges.

Why it’s called the Take It or Leave It Challenge: You do it if you want to for that month. If you don’t want to do it, you don’t do it. That’s it.

How it works: You may either use my challenge, use one of someone else, or make up your own within the first four days of the month. List the books you read under the challenges you select and mark your books COMPLETED or remove them from the wiki before the end of the month. You do NOT have to read a book from every challenge. Just choose what you'd like to read from the vast array of challenges presented monthly.

Why even do this craziness?! The idea is to challenge yourself to read something different or unexpected. Don't plan ahead; just do it spontaneously from month to month. It's fun to see which of us reads the same book. It's also fun to see who has the most unusual challenge. Feel free to borrow ideas from others or to make suggestions. Talk about a book you share with someone else by visiting that person's thread, on the current month's TIOLI thread, or on a separate dedicated thread. Learn to use the wiki. Suggestion: Always check your TBR pile first when selecting a book!

Is it secret? It's only secret until you discover it! Then you are most welcome to join us.

How can I join the fun? Please return to the link at the very TOP OF THIS THREAD to begin the CURRENT month's challenge.

This sounds like it could be really fun... and has the great possibility for becoming rather hilarious. I'm in!

6SqueakyChu

Ultimately, we (all of us who are in this together) have to make the decision whether this new challenge
will need its own group...

Anyway, have fun picking your book for January. I have mine!

7Carmenere
dec 30, 2009, 8:59 am

So if I understand this correctly, we choose our own theme read? It doesn't need to be a debut novel? Is that correct?

8Donna828
dec 30, 2009, 9:21 am

I am too uninspired right now to make my own challenge. I'll be joining Madeline in reading an author's debut book. I've chosen Haven Kimmel's The Solace of Leaving Early. And, yes, this does sound like a fun way to reduce my TBR stash.

9cyderry
dec 30, 2009, 12:02 pm

I'm in. I'm reading a book with a color in the title.

I'd thought about a mini challenge with all sorts of different categories with one book from each and now I can use them with this TIOLI Challenge.

10jadebird
dec 30, 2009, 12:18 pm

TIOLI Challenge. Sounds so exotic. Way cool.

11nittnut
dec 30, 2009, 12:30 pm

Sounds fun to me.

January 2010: I will also read an author's debut book.

I choose The Beekeeper's Apprentice because I like Sherlock Holmes, and I am trying to expand my reading genre's - I'm pretty low on mysteries.

12brenzi
dec 30, 2009, 2:20 pm

What the hey, I'm in too. Somehow I'll try to fit this into my own 1010 challenge which won't be as hard as it sounds.

13arubabookwoman
dec 30, 2009, 2:30 pm

I'm in too. I'll do the author's debut novel category. Since I'm also trying to do the Monthly Author Reads, and the January author is Thomas Hardy, I'll read Thomas Hardy's first novel, Desparate Remedies, which is described as a tale of suspense a la Wilkie Collins.

14cameling
dec 30, 2009, 2:54 pm

Great idea, Madeline and I love the acronym....reminds me of Tivoli where I had a great vacation. This sounds like it could be a hoot. I'm in.

I think for my January challenge I'll do all things India : authors, history of or stories set in the country.

15avatiakh
dec 30, 2009, 3:06 pm

I'll go with an author's debut novel. I have poet Alison Wong's first novel As the earth turns silver waiting to be read and this also fits one of my challenge aims to read more by New Zealand writers.

16Carmenere
dec 30, 2009, 3:22 pm

My mini challenge will be: Reading a novel by an author I really did not want to read again. It just happens to be the first A from my TBR shelf. Staying true to my first 10 reads of 2010.

17alcottacre
dec 30, 2009, 6:30 pm

#6: I do not really think we need our own group. I was just thinking a different topic for each mini-challenge per month (so 12 different threads for the year). Just my two cents.

18jadebird
dec 30, 2009, 7:52 pm

That sounds like an easy way to go.

19SqueakyChu

has the great possibility for becoming rather hilarious.

Yeah. I'm thinking of what odd challenges I can present to all of you. If you have any ideas, feel free to message me (mark the message *private* so no one can see it but me). Part of the fun will be in the surprise. If I like your idea, I might use it in the future.

Lynda, I find that part of the problem with most challenges is that people feel "locked" into reading something which later they might not want to read. For this challenge, you only have to read one "categorized" book per month. You can either read a book from a category I select (noted at the top of this thread) or you can make up your own categories. If you make up your own categories, place them *prominently* at the top of your 75 Book Challenge thread so others can see them. Others might want to also use the categories you chose for yourself.

This may be confusing at first, but I hope it makes for lots of interaction between all of our threads.

Chèli, what color? :)

The TIOLI Challege! That's brilliant!!

One of my favorite books is The Confessions of Max Tivoli and TIOLI reminds me of that book. :D

22SqueakyChu

Arubawoman, another fun thing to do is exactly what you're doing. That is to see how many challenges you can fulfill at the same time with only one book.

Hmmmm? That sounds like a contest to me!

23SqueakyChu
dec 30, 2009, 8:16 pm

I love everyone's ideas so far. Hope the TIOLI Challenge will make your 75 Books Challenge for 2010 very, very special.

Happy New Year to all!!

24brenzi
dec 30, 2009, 8:19 pm

Oh yes see how many challenges you can fulfill at the same time with only one book

That's what I'm talkin' about!

25richardderus

TIOLI is getting more and more fun! Lessee...first novel, pubbed after 2008 = TIOLI/75 *check*

I got no other challenges! I am so lame.

26arubabookwoman
dec 30, 2009, 9:18 pm

Mine will fill a third challenge too, since it will fall into my 1010 category of books written before 1900. :)

I thought that since I'm going to be reading The Picture of Dorian Gray it was appropriate for GRAY to be my color.

This sounds great to me. I'm in!!

I changed mine since I am trying to read more books I already owned.

The debut novel I plan to read is Dana Stabenow's first mystery, A Cold Day for Murder.

32SqueakyChu
dec 31, 2009, 8:20 am

Are you doing a different color every month? With the LT tag system, it would be easy to find such books. All of us here would love to recommend books "of color" as well! :)

33dk_phoenix
dec 31, 2009, 9:00 am

I just started reading A Study in Scarlet yesterday, and realized that this can fit into the 'debut novel' category... most excellent! I'm on the way already!

34cyderry
dec 31, 2009, 1:21 pm

February, I'm thinking will be a book with a street in the title or a day of the week, or a body of water. Maybe something else entirely.

35brenzi
dec 31, 2009, 4:31 pm

Oh I'm excited and ecstatic. My debut novel is a book I already had from the library and wanted to read in January anyway, Still Life by Louise Penny. Oh isn't it beautiful when things actually work out?

36SqueakyChu
Bewerkt: dec 31, 2009, 5:50 pm

I've been trying to think of a way that we could each list our book choice for January's TIOLI book on one page as a composite list (without me doing all the work). Ha! I've come up with the idea of all of *you* doing this on a wiki page.

To see how to do this (and, please, do not be afraid of the wiki page!), click on the link I just added to the first post of this thread. The link is called "TIOLI Wiki Page". Then tell me what you think...

37brenzi
dec 31, 2009, 6:37 pm

OK Madeline. I tried it twice with the same result. My title comes up next to your name rather than underneath it. I ended up deleting it. Maybe I'm doing something wrong IDK.

38SqueakyChu
Bewerkt: dec 31, 2009, 7:00 pm

Sorry, Bonnie. My fault. It was a hash tag you needed to add, not a number. The mark-up language is different with a wiki than with HTML. I deleted your line break and added your entry. Feel free to go back and play with it again just to see how it works. It's really kind of fun. As an LT user, you have your own wiki page on which to do whatever you'd like.

39cameling
dec 31, 2009, 10:48 pm

Madeline: I went to the link, and note that the 3 books listed are for author's debut books. What if I'm not doing an author's debut book for January? Do you still want me to list my book in that January list? Or perhaps leave a space in between, put in my category and then list my book?

40brenzi
dec 31, 2009, 11:01 pm

>38 SqueakyChu: Uh...what's a hash tag?

41cameling
dec 31, 2009, 11:08 pm

a tag with hash browns on the side?

42SqueakyChu
dec 31, 2009, 11:23 pm

--> 39

Caroline, go back to the page and make your entry. Put it in Category #2. If someone else has a different category, that can go into a Category #3.

My suggestion would be to make your challenges *very* creative in an effort to entice others to do the same one that you are doing! I started with an easy category, but I might make the categories more challenging as the year goes by. Be original!!

43cameling
dec 31, 2009, 11:25 pm

Huh..be original? I don't have a creative bone in my body ..... being creative will be a challenge in itself! oh the pressure, the pressure ..... *feels the onset of an anxiety attack....breathe...breathe...*

44SqueakyChu

Bonnie, # is a hash tag. It is also known as the pound sign.

45SqueakyChu

OK, I think I'm in. I'm doing Madeline's author's debut novel challenge. My mom loaned me Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet when I was home for Christmas, so I think I'll use that one. I think I put it on the wiki.

I may do some of the challenges of the month. But I'm too dumb to do wiki. If I take the time to figure all that out, I won't have time to read . . . :)

54SqueakyChu
Bewerkt: jan 1, 2010, 10:57 am

*crosses arms and stares at Terri*

I made using the wiki very* easy.

All you do is click on "edit", add a hash tag (i.e. #), your book title, the author of the book, and your screen name. Then you press "save page". That's it! It will take less than a minute.**

*The directions are also on the wiki page itself.

**Plus, then you can say you have figured out how to use a wiki page! :D

P.S. Try it now. There is nothing that you can do to mess it up as all former pages are saved.

55SqueakyChu
Bewerkt: jan 1, 2010, 11:03 am

Just out of curiosity, for how many of you was this your first time using an LT wiki?

Did you know that each of you has your own wiki page here at LT to use as you'd like? It's great for lists, memos, or anything else related to books or reading. If interested in knowing more, check out this wiki Main Page.

56tymfos
Bewerkt: jan 1, 2010, 11:04 am

You promise I can't mess it up??? ;)

One of my favorite lines (I can't remember from where) . . . "(that person) could screw up a free lunch" describes me well . . .

I haven't figured out a debut novel to read . . . but I'm joining Cheli in the Dorian Gray read, so that fits the colorful book theme.

OK, I'll try after I get back from the grocery store.

57lindapanzo
jan 1, 2010, 11:04 am

I don't think I even know what a wiki is so it'll be interesting. Obviously my first time using one.

58SqueakyChu
jan 1, 2010, 11:05 am

Terri, you *cannot* mess up anything I can't fix afterward

Cheli has not entered that challenge yet, so *you* do it for her. Then add your book. I am not doing all the work here! ;)

What are you confused about?

A "wiki" is simply a web page that anyone can edit and improve.

In other words, I can't edit what you post on message #61, but I can edit what you post on a wiki page. To further clarify, we are all creating/improving one page together.

An example of a large wiki is Wikipedia which is simply an online encyclopedia that anyone can edit. For real!

Terri, if first-time wiki user Donna can do it, you can do it, too! :)

Good idea, but I think this is the same as my category #10 - the Make up your Mind challenge, where i list a bunch of challenges I'd like to join but can't decide, so I'm picking a couple here and there. I think I'm just going to add this to my list of MUYM, and then follow whatever you choose for the month. I have several debuts on my TBR, ArC, and RFMS challeneges, so I'll do that one easily. If I can take the time to figure out the wiki thingie, I'll post. If not, I think it works just as well, if people post on their regular thread that this one is for the TIOLI mini challenge at the beginning of whatever post they make as they report the book.

66SqueakyChu

Glad you're joining us, Tina.

Do not fear the wiki! The one advantage I see of posting your selection there is that others may wish to do the same challenge/book that you choose. Then all of you can do it together!

One of my reading goals this year is to read all the books I've borrowed from others or been lent by them (there is a difference...). My mother-in-law lent me Francesca Kay's An Equal Stillness. This is her debut novel, I believe, and also was shortlisted for the Orange New Writing prize in 2009. So I can count it for TIOLI, towards my personal reading goals, and as part of Orange January. Bonus!

I'm relatively new to LT, but the challenges I have found so far have really expanded my reading interests, so I'm in. I guess I'm lazy and really don't want to expend the energy of creating my own mini challenges (I would just end up "creating" a challenge to fit the book I had in my hands at the time), and maybe I'm a lemming - so I'll just do what SqueakyChu is doing. I think the first challenge is a great one, and since I got Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time from my LT Secret Santa, it will be my January debut author read. Can't wait to see what you come up with for February.

i told myself no reading challenges for me in 2010 -- i failed dismally last year and don't want that to happen 2 years in a row, but this TIOLI challenge seems to be very doable...and fun! what the heck, i'm joining in...

102SqueakyChu
jan 3, 2010, 10:11 am

Interesting mini-theme

"Cold: Adventures in the World's Frozen Places"

"A Cold Day for Murder"

Brrrr!!!

I was thinking of that as well - as it's 14 degrees in the Washington, DC, area now!

We might need a warmer theme for February. :)

103lindapanzo
jan 3, 2010, 12:54 pm

#102, actually, I've been thinking of doing double "mini-challenges" with the same word in the title, for instance, pairing A Cold Day for Murder with A Cold Day in Paradise by Steve Hamilton. I think that's his debut book as well.

For instance, two favorite cozy mystery authors have books out this year with the word "Mortem" in them so maybe, later in the year, read Toast Mortem by Claudia Bishop and Roast Mortem by Cleo Coyle.

104SqueakyChu
Bewerkt: jan 3, 2010, 12:57 pm

A very cool (cold, perhaps?) and creative idea!

Warning: Just be sure that the books you use for the mini-challenges are worthwhile reading and that you're not just reading them for a word in the title.

105lindapanzo
jan 3, 2010, 12:59 pm

Very true. I think part of the challenge is finding worthwhile books that fit the double word title theme. I have both Cold books in my 1010 challenge, at least, and I like both authors writing Mortem titles.

106SqueakyChu
jan 3, 2010, 1:21 pm

It's fun to see how this challenge is developing and how each of us is stimulating others to reach for a "different" book along the way.

107cameling
jan 3, 2010, 1:39 pm

I think one of my challenges is to not be drawn into reading as many dud books as I did last year. Recommendations from LTers are pretty solid, so that's saved me from getting a few books I'd otherwise have picked up, but there were still some unworthy of my time that I borrowed from the library or bought because their synopsis sounded interesting.

108SqueakyChu
Bewerkt: jan 3, 2010, 2:12 pm

A good idea, in response to "there were still some unworthy of my time" is to simply decide not to finish books that evoke such a response from you. Your time is valuable, the challenges should be fun, and your reading should be exciting. Even though "Recommendations from LTers are pretty solid", you still need to decide for yourself which book makes good reading material and which does not. The biggest "challenge" of all these challenges, in my opinion, is to find some fresh, startling, and fulfilling reading. You have the advantage of finding others who like to read similar books to yourself and then following up on recommendations of those people. Usually ... they're right on the money!

109brenzi
jan 3, 2010, 5:53 pm

I just finished a great year of reading with mostly 4 and 5 star reads based loosely on LT recs and my own reading of prize winners and one critic who's opinion I really trust. Not enough time to waste it on books that don't completely satisfy.

110cameling
jan 3, 2010, 10:23 pm

True, Madeline ... but sometimes I just need to finish the book even though I'm not enjoying it much because I think, maybe, just maybe, it'll pick up, dust off its growing pains and become a real book before the end. On occasion this has happened. But more often then not, i'm completely disgusted with the author for writing drivel, angry with the publishers for distributing it, and annoyed with myself for not giving up on it sooner. Then there are occasions when I will give up halfway because I'm completely fed up with the book.

"All first novels are flawed. In fact, almost all anythings are flawed."

So says richardderus (Hi, Richard!). I know some of you have already read your debut book(s). In what ways have you found that debut book to be flawed? Do you agree with Richard's statement? Why or why not?

P.S. If your book is in a different challege than the "debut book", feel free to add your own Thoughts to Ponder to this thread. If you add any, do add those words in bold so they stand out to highlight your discussion questions. They can be fun questions or serious questions. Your choice. Thanks!

To date, 32 people have signed up for the TIOLI challenge. A very nice feature of it is that 75-ers can now more often plan to read the same book as other 75-ers because of how we have a composite list of TIOLI books on the wiki.

If you're undecided about what to read currently, take a look at the wiki, and join someone else there by reading the very same book!

150brenzi
jan 7, 2010, 10:25 am

Well if my debut novel Still Life by Louise Penny was flawed, I didn't discover what the flaw was. Now as I said on some other thread, probably Richard's, there's a big difference between a first novel and an author's first published novel. Most authors have written at least one other novel that's gathering dust in a closet somewhere as a reject, before they are published for the first time.

From what I've read from other LT'ers Penny's Three Pine series of mysteries gets even better as it goes along but since it was a breakaway from the typical little mystery, where the characters have no depth and you figure out the mystery long, long before the end of the book I'm not sure what flaw I could come up with for this book. I guess I'll have to give it some more thought.

151lindapanzo
jan 7, 2010, 10:36 am

brenzi, the Louise Penny books definitely improve with each book. That's one series where it's absolutely important to read them in order. The characters change so much--things happen to them and each book builds upon the previous one.

Saying anything more would be a spoiler.

Contemplation time...

I didn't realize that so many of you would be joining me in my challenge. That's great! Now here comes the question:

Is it time to move this Challenge to a Group instead of a thread on the 75 Books Challenge for us alone? Since everyone gets to input his own information on the wiki, all it would take for me to do is to set up a new wiki each month after the group is established.

I wish I had a yes/no poll like Tim has. :)

Anyway, should I make this TIOLI Challenge a group?

157cyderry
jan 9, 2010, 3:36 pm

Madeline,
I think if we have a separate thread each month that would work, but if you look at it another way, if you make a separate group, some people who are not part of this group might participate as well. Some people are intimated by the "75" number so they aren't part of the group and may not know of this much easier challenge.

To jump in on the discussion re Group vs Thread on the 75ers Group, I agree in principle on what Cheli said, but in my selfishness, I kinda hope this stays in the 75 Group because this is the one I check most often. I only check out threads in the other groups I've joined when I have spare time, which, during the weekdays is just about non-existent because of work. Oops. Sorry, Caroline!

So... two for a new group and two for separate threads here on the 75ers. How does that help me decide?! ;)

Are you ready for your first complication? Hehe!

I'm adding a Point Value to the Take It or Leave It Challenge. If you look at the wiki, you'll see a notice (at the bottom of the page) that, if one person reads the same book as another person, the point value of this challenge will increase. Why? Because two (or more) people reading one book at the same time will be more apt to discuss it with one another. The point value of January's challenge now stands at 5. Is anyone here going to raise it?

165wandering_star
jan 10, 2010, 8:31 am

I have an additional complication. Without meaning to, I've just read two debut novels ... while my planned read hasn't even arrived from Amazon yet. Do I get bonus points for being so tuned in to the challenge that it subconsciously affected the books I picked from the shelf?

166SqueakyChu
jan 10, 2010, 9:16 am

Hehe! That is indeed an additional complication. I'll think about adding points for that in the future, but first I want to see how the point system goes first before I add any more complicating factors. Okay?

167cameling

I'm starting to get an anxiety attack from all these additional factors.

168SqueakyChu
Bewerkt: jan 10, 2010, 12:04 pm

You needn't worry about "additional factors". Just list your book(s).

I'm doing the points for fun. You do not need to add them, worry about them, or even look at them. If you find them fun, you may do the addition (but stop counting at the end of the month). Take them or leave them!

Cute graphic, by the way! :)

169lindapanzo
jan 10, 2010, 12:17 pm

Interesting re. the additional points but I'll just worry about the reading.

I was planning to read two books with the same title but now I think my plan will be to read the book I intended (I'm about a third a of the way through my planned TIOLI book, A Cold Day for Murder) and then peruse the rest of the list and maybe pick an extra book or two.

I'm not sure about the point part of the challenge. Like some others, I'm just "in" for the reading. However, I did join Faith (dk_phoenix) in reading A Study in Scarlet and added it to the wiki.

I'm happy with the challenge wherever you want to put it, Madeline, and I agree with Cheli (Msg. 172) that we probably need a new thread per month.

174SqueakyChu
jan 10, 2010, 7:53 pm

I absolutely will do that!

175SqueakyChu
jan 10, 2010, 7:59 pm

I thought about the "point part" as a way of rating our connections to one another. I know that, for myself, the 75 books challenge is a *huge* group in which I'm not going to follow the threads of most participants. I will, however, notice who's reading the same book as I am and will probably want to make some comments about that book on the other person's thread. I think of the points more as a "connectedness rating", but do disregard it completely if you'd like. I put it there as something fun for me. You can just glance at the number from time to time, if you'd like! :)

176Donna828
jan 10, 2010, 9:10 pm

Okay, I get it now -- and I do like the idea of connecting with others. I'm off to drop Faith a note about A Study in Scarlet now. Thanks for clarifying the point system, Madeline, and for taking the time to create a fun and interesting way to challenge ourselves more in our reading.

I finished my TIOLI book, just now. Dana Stabenow's first mystery, A Cold Day for Murder was excellent. It's from 1992 but I can see why it's such a long-running series.

A strong sense of place and interesting characters. Now, I'd like to read the other Alaskan mystery author, Sue Henry. I think her first one is Murder on the Iditarod Trail.

179pbadeer
jan 11, 2010, 11:05 am

I just realized that the book I just finished - A Wish in Time was Laurel Bradley's first book. So a three for one shot - a Romance title for my "Read Around the Library" challenge (run by my local library), a Scotland read for my Endless European Challenge, and now a TIOLI bonus for debut novel.

180_Zoe_
jan 11, 2010, 1:52 pm

I'm really glad you've decided to keep the challenge within the group! I think that does a lot to increase the "connectedness factor", because it's one group of people doing multiple things together.

Madeline, for future polls, you can put "vote" in html tags around the question of the poll. It's not officially released yet and Tim said we should hold off on using it... but he also said that he was going to release it the following day. I think it would be harmless in contexts like this.

Also, I ended up reading a debut novel too--Elisha's Bones by Don Hoesel. This was also a (belated) ER book. I'm glad I've finally read it, though I can't say I recommend it.

I'm planning to read Soulless as well--I went out and bought it just a couple of days ago, but haven't had a chance to start yet. Hopefully I'll get to it in January.

As for my own TIOLI challenge of reading a novel in a foreign language, I haven't made much progress there yet....

I'm adding Purple Hibiscus to my January first-novel reads, and also a long-delayed Beasts of No Nation read...I've read the first 20pp, then shelved the book due to time demands, and it's finally become necessary to read it.

I don't want to tend the store in this challenge. I think it's actually better to put books that you plan to read in the hope that others will join you in reading the same books. At the end of the month, I'd also hope that you would delete any book that you have not, in fact, finished before the end of the month. I'll add this to the rules...

186SqueakyChu

OK, I'm in, since the TIOLI challenge won't add to my other reading "goals" for this year. So for this challenge, January, 2010, an author's debut book, I'm reading The Moonflower Vine, originally published in 1962. Not only was it Jetta Carleton's debut book, it was her only book. Someone has likened it to To Kill a Mockingbird, another debut and "only."

Full disclosure: I'm also reading this book for my Missouri Readers group. So I guess I'm killing about 3 birds with one stone here.

3. You may change your choice of book at any time.
4. If you add "TIOLI" as a tag to your book, That book might be considered by others for future challenges.
5. Remember to delete any unfinished book at the end of the month. You may use the unfinished book in the following month's challenge (only if it fits!).

No. Here's why. I've decided against adding points for people who read more than one book unless it's a book that someone else is reading. The reason behind my logic is that this is not so much about volume as it is about connection.

What you could do is convince someone else to read the two books you're reading. Hopefully they're good enough books to make a decent recommendation for others to read. Feel free to use this thread to plug your book(s) (as Richard has already done)!

Coming in late but intrigued by the challenge -- or really just looking for an excuse to read Frost at Christmas. I think the author only wrote radio plays before this, so it should count as a first novel. Btw, German has a separate word for someone's first work -- it's Erstling (erst = first --I'm sure you were all dying to learn that). Now off to see if I manage the wiki...

Hi, littlegreycloud,

Welcome! If you go to the wiki and look for your book, I just moved it into alphabetical order. It's not gone. :)

I know some German and am happy to learn a new German word.. so...Danke!

It seems you did fine on the wiki. I'm so glad that people are trying it out. As an FYI, each person on LibraryThing has his own wiki page to use as he likes. Want more information about it? Look here. To get to your own wiki page (you can practice there) click on where it says "Your Wiki Page" on the green column to the left on the previous link I just gave you. Have fun!

Finished my debut TIOLI - Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and added TIOLI to the tag. It already has over 500 reviews, so I didn't do a formal review. It was an interesting read, and I'm glad I read it, but somewhat disappointing based on how much attention this book has received. 3.5 stars from me.

Can't wait to see what you come up with for February.

Patrick, I actually enjoyed reading The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. It's a simple, quick read so I can understand your reaction to it, though. I'm thinking, that if anyone else chooses to read this debut novel, it's one that will be movable to February's challenge (not yet telling you what it is, of course...).

Let's Talk:
For those of you who have finished your debut novel, is the book you read one that will inspire you to look for more books by the same author? Why or why not?

Well, my first debut novel, Storm Front by Jim Butcher was a known quantity - I own everything by Jim except the SpiderMan novel. I will definitely buy everything he writes.

My second debut novel, The Magicians and Mrs. Quent by Galen Beckett was quite good, and I am looking forward to more. The pace was a little uneven, it was a trifle formulaic even where breaking with the formulas, and it didn't quite live up to its blurbs (I'm not sure the question of what if women were sequestered and sheltered for a reason was truly answered), but I still enjoyed it very much, and am looking forward to tne next one.

I've read two debut novels for the challenge: Elisha's Bones and Soulless.

Elisha's Bones was sort of meh, so I won't be looking for anything else by that author.

I'll definitely be reading more by the author of Soulless, though. Luckily she has two more books coming out later this year! I thought the premise was just so unique: vampires and werewolves in a 19th-century London steampunk setting, with humour rather than horror. I would read similar books by other authors if I could find any.

What is steampunk?

277lauranav
jan 15, 2010, 10:27 am

I've read two
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon - I found the book very interesting but I probably will not actively search out more books by this author. The concept was interesting, but the style of writing was specific to that book.

I also read The Solace of Leaving Early by Haven Kimmel
I really enjoyed the book as a whole, but really struggled with some of the details included and internal thought processes that didn't grab me. I'm might look at another Haven Kimmel book, but I won't rush out to get another one.

>276 SqueakyChu: In this case, it's basically historical science fiction: steam technology in a 19th-century setting. I'm not sure what the official definition is, but here's what wikipedia says:

The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century, and often Victorian era England—but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date. Other examples of steampunk contain alternate history-style presentations of "the path not taken" of such technology as dirigibles, analog computers, or digital mechanical computers (such as Charles Babbage's Analytical engine); these frequently are presented in an idealized light, or with a presumption of functionality.

>274 BethyB: I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed The Magicians and Mrs. Quent despite its flaws. I'm really intrigued by the premise, but I've so far avoided reading it because of the disappointing reviews. Maybe I'll give it a try after all.

I read two debut novels. The first was Still Life by Louise Penny, the first in her Three Pines mystery which I really enjoyed. I will definitely continue reading the series which I understand from other LT'ers just continues to get better and better.

The other debut novel was Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. I chose this book because last summer I read and enjoyed her novel Half a Yellow Sun which took place during Nigeria's civil war in the 60's. Purple Hibiscus, a coming of age story, was an entirely different novel, taking place in the present, but still centered around the corrupt Nigerian government as well as women's issues and abuse; a thoroughly enjoyable read also.

I've also read two books for this challenge. The first, The Solace of Leaving Early was right up my reading alley. Gloomy, unlikable characters (until you get to know them), deep thoughts about philosophy and theology. Not everyone's cuppa, but I tend to navigate toward dark, cerebral novels. I'll definitely be reading more by Kimmel.

The second one I read, A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was inspired by the Sherlock Holmes movie and was pure fun. I bought a S.H. anthology and will be dipping into his adventures from time to time to give me a break from the heavier books I read.

I've just posted my review of the first Inspector Gamache mystery, Still Life, in my "Homeless Reviews" thread in Club Read 2010 ... post #5.

No short version, go read the review then the book.

Another first book I read was Beasts of No Nation, which is wonderful and amazing and so far the author's only novel. If anyone knows Uzodinma Iweala, go chain him to a desk and make him write more!!

Time Travelers Are Schizophrenic is the third of the first books I've read...quite a good first effort at science-fictional romantic space opera. As the author lives only a few miles from me, I state cateorically that his next book is on my "must-have" list! *fearful glance over shoulder*

edited/touchstone for "Still Life" STILL WRONG!!

I finished Scaramouche by Rafael Sabatini.
Some interesting insight into the French Revolution. Very good character study of the young cynical lawyer who changes his position a number of times and ends up a bit more of an idealist by the end.
There is, of course, a beautiful girl or two, and an evil Marquis, and some good sword-fighting.

If you liked The Scarlet Pimpernel this is just as good.

I am enjoying this challenge - I've read 2 books I didn't already have on my list, and 2 that I did have on my TBR for 2010 list and had fun seeing what everyone else is reading. It's been fun to watch it evolve this month.

AND - I have finally played around with my wiki page thanks to this introduction to the whole concept.

I'm looking forward to learning what the February challenge is.

I seriously doubt that Tim would allow us to do something that would cause LT to explode. :)

What I see as the fun of LibraryThing is the many facets it has. There's so much to learn and so much to do here. Perhaps I'll incorporate some of LT's great features into future TIOLI challenges. I've got all sorts of great ideas.

By the way, is anyone here going to participate in the LT 24-Hour ReadaThon next weekend? (link moved to post #291)

*revokes previous offer of more points (too confusing), but it still might be fun to participate*

Unfortunately, I do not think I will be able to do the Readathon because we are leaving to visit my mother early (well, early to me) Sunday morning, so my normal late night reading is going to have to be curtailed.

As far as the Boston Meet-Up goes, I am nowhere in that neighborhood :)

I have read three debut novels (one planned for this challenge, and two sort of by accident) but I wouldn't seek out any of those authors' works again.

They were: In The Bleak Midwinter by Julia Spencer-Fleming, perfectly enjoyable mystery, but not good enough for me to add her other books to the wishlist

Astrid and Veronika by Linda Olsson, almost a very good book but spoilt by over-egging (or as we say in Chinese, painting the legs on the snake)

Cold Earth by Sarah Moss, a GREAT idea ruined by a very irritating narrator

Hey, now, that's interesting. Two of the books were nearly very good. Maybe that goes back to Richard's point about how all first novels are flawed? I still don't think I'll read Sarah Moss again because her narrator was smug as well as irritating and so I don't think that is likely to change. But I might keep an eye on what Linda Olsson comes up with in the future.
