Hi all. I would love some suggestions for read aloud novels for primary aged children (8-12 years). I teach in Sydney Australia. Thanks( in advance) for your help and ideas.

Sideways Stories From Wayside School and others in the series,
Holes,
The Little Prince,
and for Christmas A Christmas Carol.
you might also want to check out books by George MacDonald.

Have you seen the read aloud handbook?

It is a fantastic resource, and as the title indicates, it is all about read alouds.

Just Published: Try Notch Ear's Sacrifice, a true-to-life tale about red fox brothers, their struggle to survive, and how their brotherly love is strained when they both fall for the same vixen. But the real test comes when MOONLIGHT is expecting kits and NOTCH EAR cannot find food for his mate. While making his way to a human neighborhood where he can scavenge food, he is struck by a car. Will he survive to help raise his kits? Can they survive without him? In the tradition of Jack London's White Fang, this book presents life as the foxes experience it.

I teach children ages 9-12. They loved this story when I read it aloud. I confess, however, they were biased: Their teacher wrote the novel. Go to www.NotchEarsSacrifice.com/ to find out where you can get the book.

If they're doing some of the reading, you may try Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices, a Newbery-winning collection of poetry all about insects.

Some of our favorites are the several magic books by Edward Eager such as Seven-Day Magic and Half Magic. Also the Great Brain books by John Fitzgerald, they are fun and appeal to a wide audience.

How about an old classic, My Father's Dragon?

My kids loved Swiss Family Robinson, The Littles books, and Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books. THere are so many to choose from-and so very little time!
