Too nice outside to read?

One problem I have here in beautiful San Diego is that there's a little kid inside of me screaming to go outside and play. She does not want to sit and read! The adult wants to read, but that kid nags. Do you know what I mean?

How do you deal with the antsy annoying part of you that would rather go outside and play than sit inside and read?

take a book, go for a walk in the park or on the beach, and settle down on a blanket, under a tree and read!!! best of both worlds.

My favorite is beach reading, but a few weeks back when we had the super low tides, it smelled so bad that I had to leave. In 10 years of living here, I've never found that low tide was so funky I couldn't stand it, but this last time was the worst!

I think I finally just went home to read.

There is a little house, a historical one at that, located in the Gaslamp. It is a museum but also has a small little park with a few benches. I have seen very few people utilize it, but I have always imagined it a nice little place to read.

You know, within the original plans of the near-fabled Downtown Library, there is a park that surrounds the library that is situated as a park specifically for reading. Looks lovely via landscape plans...but as to whether or not it happens...

I made it down to the beach in OB today and it certainly was warm enough, but the kelp flies are out in full force and the berm prevented much escape...long story short, I was not able to read as much as I would've liked to. But how dare I complain? It was 70+ degrees at the beach in mid-February.

Ah, yes, kelp flies would be very happy in this sort of weather.

Can kelp flies be happy? Or merely content?

The question is, can they get their reading done in this glorious weather?

Well, looks like all the San Diego Bibliophiles are outside playing or somewhere reading, because there's been no action on this group for awhile.

Looks like someone poked & prodded the clouds, we're due for rain? That should trap us all back inside with our books...

Nothing but a rumor. A little more rain would be nice, but that may be it for awhile. Oh well. Good thing I have my reading (sun)glasses!

We bought a couple of hammocks last year and it is heaven to sway and enjoy a cool breeze while reading. It seems like a waste of a great day to stay inside with a book but in the hammock, you get it all!

I have my gravity recliner out on the deck in back, and have a great time kicking back in the sun and breeze, with my ice tea at hand, lost in a book.

I read a little about Greek myths yesterday at the rocky beach near the Carlsbad Power Plant.

Hammocks and gravity recliners. Nice! Time to start heading out to the beach! Now, where is that 80 sunblock?

I tried to sit outside and read, but it's getting cold out there!

Ah, but Saturday, Sunday and Monday were great days for sitting on the deck in the gravity recliner and reading!

I was walking back from the community pool (book in hand) with my grandchildren and ... only heard a rumbling roar, but did not feel the quake. (Thought it was helicopter or plane from Mira Mesa Marine Airfield)...

I have lived in SD county all of my life and somehow, I tend to miss earthquakes when they happen. And this one time I felt it, I was napping at the time with the girlfriend woke me up to tell me one was going on. Otherwise, I would have slept right through it.

I was napping as well, and it woke me up out of a sound sleep. Between the window weights rattling in the walls and the cats racing around in panic, there was no way to miss this one.

My ballet teacher said she was walking across the street and she didn't feel it, either. Astounding! How could you be outside with your feet on the ground and not feel it?! "Mother Nature is a maaaad scientist, Jerry!"

May Gray anyone? This weather can be great for logging in some serious cozy reading time, but I have to be in the mood for it. I was so happy to see the sun today. I hope that tomorrow clears up as well. I can read when it's sunny and 60 out.

May Grey leads to June Gloom. However, I must say, that I am particularly enjoying the coolness of this weather. Because, for me, I really dislike being bathed in trapped Ultraviolet due to a hot May Grey/June Gloom - you know, sun burns without the sun.

This certainly has been a chilly Winter/Spring and the fat pigeons strutting their stuff has certainly been there to remind the more observant person. ;-)

I don't mind the gray, but the wind today made it impossible to read anywhere but on the couch... Brrrrrr!

Too windy outside? Sounds like New Mexico at this time of year. Those saloon doors aslamming and tumbleweeds ablowing in those movies is FOR REAL.

I have been hunched over books and journals in libraries. I so look forward to vacation starting this Friday. First stop: the beach to read.

I'm looking forward to the end of the school year and retirement in two weeks. Then I'm going on a reading binge! Outdoors preferable.

I love to read at the beach, but sometimes a little too windy and distracting, and I have a lovely back yard, I'll be reading there until the lack of water finally dries up my pretty flowers that went wild this year because of all the nice rain. Just finished The Devil Queen and now will start I, Mona Lisa in the comfort of my soft lawnchair.

#32, Ronincats - - I can relate to this. After I retired, I did nothing but read for about a year. I just couldn't get enough of it. After 10 years of retirement, I'm still reading 1-2 hours a day.

Well, it certainly isn't too nice outside to read today. In fact, I think this weather is perfect reading weather! I'm not a sports fan, so I'd much rather read than watch "the game" and with the chill and the gray and the rain, well, it doesn't get much better than this.

Daylight savings time is so overrated. :-D

I had to smile when I saw a new message here, on today of all days! Definitely cold and wet outside, NOT a day for reading out there but great, as you say, for reading indoors.

I'm reading in three books right now, a shared read of Pagans & Christians by Robin Lane Fox, a group read (a re-read for me, but it's been 10 years) of American Gods, and an enchanting sequel to Princess Ben called Wisdom's Kiss (YA fantasy--no, no werewolves, vampires or sparkles).

I re-read The Secret History a week ago and it was just fabulous. Even better than the first time.

Right now I'm delving into nonfiction: The Pleasures of Reading in an Age of Distraction. Also reading The Explorer's Code and soon to be starting Bunheads, a YA read about ballerinas, not vampires, werewolves, or witches.

Boy, if I thought last week was good reading weather, today is the best! A quarter of an inch my eye. It's raining buckets in Mission Hills. Love to lay around reading with the falling rain as background music.

I don't know about anyone else, but I am just so not loving this weather. Where's the rain we need so badly?

One of my beloved animals passed away this weekend and this sunny weather mocks me.

I guess it's going to be this way all "winter" and I use the term very loosely.

Can I get a reality check anyone?

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss--it's always hard when a member of the family is gone.

Fortunately we had a lot of rain in November--we'd be in really bad shape without that. I still haven't had to do any significant watering in the garden. I've been glad no rain this week, as I was staining and polyurethaning bookshelves in the back yard (see below), but I hope we get some in the second half of February.

We got a fair amount of rain yesterday but we're still a little low. Smells like spring outside now, though. Gotta love that.
