Are your bookcases (or your to-be-read-piles) so high you need a library ladder? Mine aren't, but I recently moved and now I can install larger bookcases, so I'm looking for ideas on library ladders. Post your pictures!

My book cases are not high enough to need a library ladder, though I do wish they were that tall. I could use the space... because I do have more books than I have shelf space.
Something like this, maybe? http://www.putnamrollingladder.com/images/flyer.jpg

I've always thought this kind of thing was very clever:

It's library steps when you need them, and a chair the rest of the time!

Ah, yes. The chair/ladder. I would like one, but if I had the book shelves I want, (about 10 or 12 feet tall) that sort of ladder would not allow me to reach the highest shelf or perhaps two. I am far too short as it is, and those chair/ladder things aren't that tall of a ladder.

That's what I have, and it's been great. A side chair in the library for company - just enough steps to reach that top shelf without stretching (and risking dropping the book).

I have this print framed in my library, actually. You can see it in the photo under "about my library" on my profile page.

I have one of those! I can reach my top shelves (about 10' up), and it was way less expensive than those rolling ladders.

I've always been partial to libraries with a gallery, like this one. But I doubt I'll ever own one.

Oooh, yes - when my husband and I went to see the Disney Beauty and the Beast, and they did that shot of the *huge* library, with the galleries stretching up and up, we both said "I want one of those!"

I posted this before elsewhere, but the ladder system that found me wasn't meant for a library. It's actually a bunk ladder from an old cruise ship. It's supposedly from the Queen Mary--maybe, maybe not, but it's been perfect. Bunk ladders hook into metal mattress supports, so I ordered strips of 1/4" heavy brass (available from metalsupermarkets.com and other places) for the width of my bookcases, and screwed them right into the fronts. It did take a little work to drill holes for the screws, and countersinks so the screw heads would be flush. The ladder secures quite well, and I can reach all the books along our 10' ceiling. It's also easy to move the ladder from one wall of bookcases to another. It turned out to be much less expensive than a full library ladder system, and very well suited for a small room. As soon as I can move to a library like staffordcastle's suggestion, I'll be ready to part with it!

Brilliant! That's exactly what I need. My new shelves built by my best beloved are so high I can't get to the top two. I've been climbing around on things that ruin the floor and risk toppling me over. Which would be a very bad thing considering that if I went over railing I'd have about a 20 ft drop.
