I remember reading a book a few years ago in which women were the rulers and they didn't allow men to engage in physical sports because they thought their external genitals made them too fragile. I was talking about this while horseback riding with a group of people last week (appropriately), but I couldn't remember the name or author of the book or story. Any ideas.

Poul and Kornbluth's Search the Sky has a section about a women-ruled planet, and I think it uses that idea. It's not a bit feminist, however.

Thanks, but I don't think that could be it. I'm pretty sure it was a feminist novel or story.

Mack Reynolds' Amazon Planet perhaps? I haven't actually read it, but looking on the back cover ( http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2325356.Amazon_Planet ) it might be what you're looking for.

Or else you can try browsing through http://feministsf.org/bibs/ and see if you can find something...

I read Amazon Planet in its original Analog magazine serial. It's not feminist either, though less nonfeminist than the Pohl and Kornbluth.

Oh? I kind of got the impression, reading about it, that it was a bit feminist...but, like I said, I'm really not that familiar with it, so I'll trust you on this one. :)

>1 Citizenjoyce: Gee, it's one I haven't read, Joyce. Unless it's Elizabeth Bear's Carnival. It seems the men on New Amazonia were less aggressive than the women but I don't know if I remember any sports restrictions.

I don't remember the details of the book but could it be Egalia's Daughters by Gerd Brantenberg?

Neither Carnival nor Egalia's Daughters look familiar, but they're on the right track. But they both look great. Both on the wish list. It's been so long since I read the book, maybe I wouldn't recognize it.

I thought of Egalia's Daughters by Gerd Brantenberg also. The menwim wear "peho"'s to protect their genitalia.

This totally rings a bell with me! It might be If I pay thee not in gold but I'm not sure. I'll go have a look

If you don't find it, you could also post it in the 'Name that book' group. That group was formed specifically for finding books that you don't know the title or author of.
