Centurion

Has anyone here seen the movie "Centurion"? If so was it worth watching?

I just "rented" it via Amazon. I steeled myself for utter disappointment, so luckily, I ended up enjoying the film :-) I am frankly shocked that it isn't playing in more theaters around the world, because it really is a well made movie. If you are REALLY into Roman stuff like I am, you will certainly find a laundry list of faults with the film, but for the average viewer, I can't imagine not liking it, provided you know what you're getting into. Ostensibly it is about the legend of the 9th legion which says they "disappeared" in modern Scotland, but really follows the tale of a handful of survivors as they try to work their way back to Roman territory.

Saw it on Amazon; decent little action film. I echo Feicht's coments. I did miss a good volley of pila but we can't have everything. Worth it to me.

Yeah that was one of the many "small things" that bothered me... the soldiers weren't carrying pila! But unfortunately, that wasn't *really* the point of the movie, I guess. The soldiers wouldn't have likely used their pila in the situation presented, anyway. Since the main point was the whole "chase" aspect, I figure that's where they spent most of their movie-making ideas or whatever.

EDIT: One thing though... the movie is extremely bloody, in a kind of over-the-top way. I have no problem with excessive amounts of gore in a movie, but at times it almost looked like a cross between horror movie-fake and 300 fake, if you know what I mean.

I hadn't heard of this movie either - Ammianus pointed it out to me. It was good, fun (yes - and gory) Saturday night viewing. The story was an unusual, and welcome, subject for a film and has echoes of a 'grown-up' version of the books by Rosemary Sutcliff.

So it was an escape and evasion movie.

How do you rent a movie from Amazon? I have not heard of this. I know that I live in an outer province of the empire, but really!

Yeah the majority of the story is definitely about the legionaries that survive an attack being hunted down, but the movie has a few distinct sections that sort of weave together.

And yeah you can rent movies off of Amazon. This was the first time I'd done it, so I don't know much about it, actually. Centurion was seven bucks (though i had a five dollar off coupon) but that might have been just because it was still in theaters.

ON Amazon in the US there's a tab in the SHop all Departments section that's takes you to VIDEO ON DEMAND, you can rent or puchase movies or tv shows and you can watch them right on your computer if you choose. The NETFLIX, company also has a function for watching some movies (not all their stock) as streaming video on your computer. So I can watch CENTURION upstairs on my large monitor old flks computer while my wife watches Julia Roberts downstairs.

OT: If you have TiVo, on which I have become quite dependent, you can play your Netflix Instant Play queue or Amazon on demand films directly to your TV.

This film does look interesting - I did not know you can rent right on Amazon. Pretty soon we'll also be able to rent on YouTube. I'll have to check this one out.

How odd that two films on the Ninth came out more-or-less the same time, as The Eagle came out only ten months later than Centurion. The Eagle is more explicitly a version of Rosemary Sutcliff's The Eagle of the Ninth, and has a US cast for the Romans and attempts to echo Vietnam in the legionaries' experience, something I liked a lot (I'll skip over the use of the testudo in close combat, though). I'll try to look out for Centurion now, though it does sound a bit gorey for me.
