I learned to read when I was 3 or 4 -- my parents could never agree as to when. But my dad held me in his lap and read the newspaper to me along with all of my fairy tales. Mom noticed me reading to my dolls and was shocked when she realized I hadn't memorized the words. I've read voraciously ever since,

Until I started working, I read an average of a book a day -- Gone with the Wind took 2. Work meant that I had to give up much of my life, so I dropped down to a book a week, Then my health began to deteriorate. Pain interfered and I wasn;t able to conccentrate well enough to read. Half-a-dozen surgeries later, I am cancer-free, the pain can be controlled but I am bed-bound,

I tried reading in bed but I tire of holding the book so quickly. Then I found e-books! No fancy reader for mr; my laptop is perfect! And best of all, I got an ipod for Christmas. My audio lobrary has grown to 183 books in 10 months.

Now (coming finally to the point) I've discovered LT. As I begin to enter my library, I don't have a way to indicate the book is e- or audio. I can enter the narrator as an other author, But I have both e- and audio versions of some novels. I want to put these in cottectly but I can't seem to find directions.

Help?!

Are you adding your books by ISBN? Usually the ISBN will help you find the correct entry and format for the book.

One thing that I do to help me see my audiobooks at a glance is to use the Collections feature to separate them from my other books. Just create an Audiobooks collection and put all your audiobooks in it. You can look at my library and see if that will work for you. Is that what you had in mind?

That's what I've done, as well, created a collection just for the Audio books, and I list the reader/narrator in the comments, so that I can see patterns in my listening.
Adding books, you can usually type the title and the word 'audio' and the correct listing will usually come up.

I generally put [Audio] in the title and I'll tag it '>CD' or whatever format it is/was.

wisewoman: I love your library! This feels almost like visiting someone's home and reading the books on the shelves. I think ISBN would be the right thing, but I can't find the ISBN on my virtual books. Everything I have was downloaded without a physical copy.

2wonderY: I figured out how to add an unnamed collection, but not how to rename the collections. ***edit: I figured it out!*** You have such intriguing collections and make me wish I could organize my paper library to see the patterns there.

readafew: thanks. that tip gives me far fewer possibilities to look through.

Barbara,
I have a bunch of audio books as well but I have mine tagged !AUDIO rather than using a collection. When I'm adding them (if I don't have the ISBN), I put in the title and then look at the (more) info which usually states whether it is paperback, hardback, or audio, then I click on the Audio one.

cyderry, I think I'm going to stick to using collections. reasafew's hint of using audio as a search item: { title, audio } really helps to cut down on the misses.

Y'all are really helpful at making me feel at home here. So helpful in fact that I feel safe enough to ask another question or . Collections are really helpful but I'm not sure quite how to use wishlist and read/not owned.

WISHLIST: I think that this is not in my library, right? Does it matter what edition?

READ/NOT OWNED; Do these go into your library? I can rationalize
both options but I'd like to be consistent. If I see the edition that I read earlier, should I use it?

I've got maybe 10% of my library entered.

Barbara,

That depends entirely on how you want to do it. You can specify which edition for your wishlist, or just stab at the first choice. In my case, I appreciate early works, so I'm going to scroll down and look for an original publication date. For old literature, the modern reprints just won't do for me, even in wishlist form.

Read/Not owned is for borrowed or library books or used to own but it has slipped away somehow.
It won't automatically be added to 'Your library' but it will still be part of your total count, and, at present will show up in your statistics, as will Wishlist entries. Again, your choice of which one to click is entirely up to your sense of correctness. I like to add the prettiest cover when I edit, but that's another option that is independent of edition.

There is a hot and heavy discussion going on about seperating Wishlist books out, so they don't reflect any part of the users collection. I hope this happens, personally.

In the Wishlist I generally use a 'generic' edition mostly Title and author, unless I am wanting a specific edition in which case I will put that one on the list.

Read/Not owned if I have the copy handy I put that one in, otherwise I just pick one.

If you download, or don't have a physical copy, try to find the website of the publisher of the audio version (most audio book sites list the publisher) as generally you will find an ISBN number there.

my audiobooks are all from librivox.org and don't have ISBNs . . . they are from texts in the public domain and most don't indicate which edition they are based on . . . In most cases I've also downloaded the gutenberg.org text for the book (also usually unidentified in terms of edition, supposedly all public domain) . . . I usually sort this all out in the comments, but probably should have a better system. Thanks for all the above ideas!
BTW, I haven't been noting the narrator(s) because there are usually multiple narrators for librivox, but I may start adding them for future entries.
