A great place to browse for used publications in Italian, English, and other languages, or to just hang out for a time, is the "High Water Bookstore" in the Castello sestiere of Venice (Calle Longa S.M. Formosa 5176; Phone: 041 2960841). It's packed with thousands of hardcovers, paperbacks, magazines, and comic books, many of them in gondolas, smaller boats, and, if I recall, in bathtubs. On the stone floor are stenciled footsteps that lead out to an actual canal. The owner is very friendly, couldn't care less if you purchase anything, and urges you to follow the footsteps out to the water, which is only a few inches below the bookstore and actually washes up to the steps that lead down to the canal. I bought some old postcards and a Venice 2011 calendar, and he gave me a great bookmark which shows him reading a book on Venice atop a stack of volumes in the middle of the lagoon.
