Fiction. Mystery. HTML:

1926, and Joe Sandilands is back from India, enjoying the frantic pleasures of Jazz Age London. Yet, there is a darkness behind all that postwar gaiety. A woman has been discovered bludgeoned to death in her suite at the Ritz. A broken window and missing emerald necklace suggest that it is a burglary gone wrong. But the corpse is that of a much-respected member of the British establishment, Dame Beatrice Joliffe, one of the founders of the Wrens, and so Scotland Yard send Joe to conduct a swift enquiry. Her companion, an ex-chorus girl, falls from Waterloo Bridge at twilight.

Two of the Dame's clique of eager young Wrens commit suicide. All these deaths make Joe suspect that Beatrice has been killed by someone close to her but suddenly he finds that the case is closed and he is asked by his superiors to surrender his files. Against the background of the looming General Strike, and pressure from unseen governmental presences he struggles on, picking his way through the political panic and rebelling against authority, through to a shattering solution to the killings.

Slightly disappointed no link between previous book which saw Joe firmly entrenched in India to this one where he has seemingly transitioned straight back into a an active policing role in London - hard to see that this is number 5 in a series....apart from that not a bad stand alone detective novel. I was on a 'bee' reading theme.

Although this is #5 in the Detective Joe Sandilands series, it is the first of the series that I have read. Writing about it now reminds me that I wanted to start at the beginning of the series but haven’t yet done so.

Britain, 1926 (I love these books set between the two World Wars). A society matron is murdered and the investigation uncovers—you guessed it—secrets.

The characters are deftly developed, the plot ingenious, and the reveal stunning. It made me able to calm my OCD regret that I hadn’t started at the beginning of the series. 4½ stars ( )

For a long time (2/3 of the book), I have no idea where Barbara Cleverly was going with the plot or the characters. But she managed to connect all the dots, unravel all the tangling threads into an ending that is not happy happy joy joy or even good triumphs over evil because Cleverly is faithful to human nature and the way as a society that we ultimately choose to behave even when we hold up values of honesty, good and truth.

Historical interesting, post WW1, almost on the verge of the great depression, London at the heart of national strikes and civil unrest. Well worth the read. ( )

...And Cleverly plotted. Sandilands, the detective, is in charge of discovering the murderer of a woman at the Ritz.

Set between the wars, Cleverly has fun playing with the social and sexual mores of the period. ( )
