Jillian Conrad never believed in vampires--until she was unwillingly injected with a serum that was supposed to act as a deadly poison to them. Now, tormented half-vampire Declan Reese wants her blood to destroy the undead kingdom. Unfortunately, the serum has also made her blood irresistible to all vampires--including Declan, whose desire for Jillian is more than mere hunger.… (meer)

This book was exciting from the first to the last page! I thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait for Bloodlust which comes out in July! ( )

Wrong place, wrong time. That's the reason the heroine suddenly finds herself held hostage by a man scientist and ejected with a poison that burns like hell and leaves her with a very limited life span. Now, kidnapped by a viciously scarred mad man-the heroine is torn between hating him for his cold demeanor and the whole kidnapping deal but also knowing that she needs him to survive. He's got orders to get her back to the compound and his father with the hope that the poison can be extracted and she may have a chance to live. But being with him comes with its own dangers. He's half vampire and the only thing that's keeping him from becoming the monster inside of him is a serum he must take every 3 hours. But when they're attacked by vampires looking for the serum now inside the heroine's body, she gives them his medicine. Now he's without. But instead of becoming a monster he becomes a decent person-who knew? The serum succeeded in subduing his craving for blood it also subdued his humanity. He finds himself attracted to his prisoner, caring for her and protecting her with everything inside of him. When they arrive at the compound to realize that not only is his father not going to take the poison back but is in fact wanting her to use it to kill the vampire king, the heroine feel betrayed. This whole story was constantly flipping and twisting who was the bad guy and who was the good guy. The hero could be considered both. He was a real asshole at times and ignorant and blind to what his father really was but when he's off the serum he's actually kind and reliable. I absolutely hated the father and the doctor- so freaking happy that both of them got what was coming to them in the end. It was basically the whole 'for the greater good' argument and it was so enraging to read about what the heroine had to go through in order for them to get what they wanted. I find it hard to read about such plot lines-especially when written in the first narrative- as I frequently find himself getting angrier and angrier- envisioning punching that stupid doctor in the face. But that's what makes a good book. Something that strikes up emotions and gets you involved in the story. I enjoyed the heroine for the strong woman she was. I don't think I could have survived all the shit she went through. Same with the hero. Covered completely in scars and missing as eye- he was far from prince charming. But he was a great character and I was captivated with the story, completely unprepared for what new plot twist that was to come. ( )

The plot was interesting, though the premise never really worked for me and it never captivated my imagination. ( )

I have only read one Michelle Rowan book. It was an ‘ok’ YA book. Therefore completely consider me floored by how much I enjoyed Rowen’s urban fantasy novel, “Nightshade”. I read this book fluidly and at every chance I had to sit down for even five minutes.

Nightshade manages the impressive feat of being a vampire tale that also feels completely original. And these vampires are the scariest I’ve read about since those appearing in the first few Anita Blake novels. To add to the regular vampires, whom in this world live underground and mostly out of the way of the human population) are dhampyrs, half breeds made from a human mother and a vampire father. For unknown reasons, some of these dhampyr babies are born as mostly appearing human, but others (and more frequently) are born as literal monsters.

Our heroine Jillian, is just a temporary office worker who seems to mostly be just drifting through her life, battling some bouts of occasion depression over her parents deaths, and basically trying to do the right thing and stay out of the way. Unfortunately she is in the wrong place and the wrong time one morning when she is held hostage in her office building and injected with a mysterious poison.

She is kidnapped immediately following the injection by a scarred scary man named Declan who opens her to the entire new world of these dhampyrs and vampires. And gradually she must come to terms with the fact that she is now walking, talking vampire poison.

This is just a very basic introduction and I won’t go anymore into the plot because I don’t want to spoil a single plot twist. And in “Nightshade” there are plenty of those twists! You never really know who to trust in this book, even the good guys can make you wonder if they are bad and vice versa. Jillian herself is a delight and as the reader, I really wanted her to have allies and survive every situation she gets thrown in.

The book has a little romance and a little humor thrown in too but the biggest strengths are the tale’s well developed characters and incredibly detailed world. The premise of this story has much potential to be expanded on. There is a sequel in the works as well as a novella that sits between the two books, but I can see how the story could continue on well after that, should the author decide to continue the series. This book was good enough to make me want to pick up her previous “Immortality Bites”, her other new Demon series (Eden), as well as her upcoming new YA series ( )

This is the first book in Rowen's Jillian Conrad series. There are going to be at least two books in this series; the 2nd will be titled Bloodlust and is scheduled for a July 2011 release date. I have read some of Michelle Rowen's series previously and enjoyed them. I really loved her Demon Princess series and was excited to read a new series by her that was aimed more at urban fantasy than romance. This was a very entertaining read, it was quick and fun.

Jillian (Jill to her friends) is just trying to get some coffee and get back to work. She is grabbed by a man in an elevator and injected with something; next thing she knows she is being kidnapped by a large scarred man who is telling her she's been injected with a poison that normal hospitals won't be able to do anything about. Jill agrees (kind of) to go with him and ends up having her eyes opened to a world where vampires are real and are definitely not the nice guys.

This book was a fast and fun read. Jillian is a wonderful character: she is practical, sarcastic, noisy, and surprisingly resilient given that she is an unsuspecting victim to all that is going on. The plot is solid and engaging if not completely original. The beginning of this book especially reminded me of Gena Showalter's Playing With Fire.

Declan is an interesting character who is forced to take a serum to subdue his vampiric nature. As the male lead he is a bit on and off; at points he is endearing and at others not. Him and Jill have okay chemistry together, but it was never really something that blew me off my feet. I have definitely read about better female/male match-ups. That being said their relationship was okay, and they were fun to read about.

There is quite a bit of action in this book, making it more of an urban fantasy/paranormal romance blend than straight up romance. Rowen's writing style is easy to read and the dialogue between characters is snappy and fun. The book wraps things up nicely while still leaving some things un-resolved for the next book.

Overall a solid and fun read; equal parts urban fantasy and paranormal romance. Jillian is a wonderful character, as is Declan. The chemistry between the two could have been better but they were still a lot of fun to read about. I love Rowen's writing style it is so easy and fun to read. I will definitely be picking up Bloodlust when it comes out. Recommended for readers who like books about dhampirs, strong women caught in unsuspecting situations, and paranormal romance that tends toward urban fantasy. ( )
