A wonderful children's story. Great for introducing your child to the wonders of first grade. I enjoyed reading it aloud in a pirate voice, and my son laughed and laughed. Now I have to get the Guide to Recess too. ( )

I think this is a fun pirate readaloud, if you don't mind having to explain some of the words to the younger set. Yarrr, mateys! ( )

Now this book, I liked! As many of you are aware, I love pirates and so I thought this books was great…but I don’t think that a child would unless they were very interested in pirates and already know “pirate speak”. It is the boy’s first day of school and he tells all about it speaking as if he were a pirate. At the end of the day, he asks his teacher where his treasure is and she hands him a map where X marks the spot. The map leads him to the library where he is shown reading Treasure Island. Again, I enjoyed it and I love the concept of it but I am not sure what a school age child’s reaction would be to the language used. ( )

A boy narrates his first day of school in full pirate slang, while he is accompanied in the illustrations by a gang of charismatic, sepia-toned imaginary pirates. A glossary in the back defines terms like "deadlights" and "fiddler's green," but the fun of the book is how the jaunty, unfamiliar language makes sense in context of the pictures. This book is a wonderful read-aloud, and may appeal to older readers who are pirate fans.
