George is an unusually successful travel agent, providing other people with the adventures he dare not risk. Though content to wrap himself in fantasies, he is haunted by the fact that 'the important things happened whilst his back was turned' and by the belief that he fathered the daughter- now a desirable young woman- of his best friends, Sam and Claire. To avoid temptation, George stumbles into a disastrous marriage and determines to mould himself into a supportive husband. But a holiday in Turkey snaps his private world when George finds himself in the midst of intrigue and murder and is forced to acknowledge that life is not the fairy-tale he'd imagined. In this superbly constructed and mercilessly observed novel, part comedy, part thriller, Nina Bawden exposes the fictions we impose on our lives.… (meer)

Bawden's novels are character-driven. This is a good thing because if the characters were less interesting I would have stopped reading around page 80. The main character, George, has a travel business where he matches his customers to tours that he knows will suit them. This almost uncanny gift has made him, in his mid-thirties, very rich. However, he isn't content because his personal life is a mess. He is in love with the 15 year old daughter of his best friends, and to make this even more complicated, Sally may be his natural daughter, a result of a brief affair with Sally's mother. In order to fend off these unnatural urges, George marries a woman because he feels sorry for her. The dynamics among the characters are interesting and many of the characters are likable..

However, half way through, Bawden throws the characters into the political turmoil of early 1970's Turkey and she lost me. There are terrorists, earthquakes, and suicides coupled with the tension between George and his two women. I was bored when I should have been interested in their plight.

The novel has two really good points. George's first meeting with his wife is funny. And the novel is short. ( )

Sometimes George felt that nothing real had ever happened to him. The world swept by on its passionate and catastrophic way and he stood on the edge of it, watching.
