I have read several books about the role of women in the Civil War and this book is a good overview of women on both sides, both black and white. From women who dressed as men to fight to runaway slaves who acted spies, you get an overall feel for the power of the emotion running behind this conflict, particularly regarding the Southern states.

There is good use of inset pieces regarding specific events or people.

If you have an interest in the Civil War this book is a good starter relating to the role of women in it. With a detailed chronology at the front and a glossary of terms at the back it does a good job of providing the essentials for learning about this topic. ( )
