This book follows Florence Nightingale as she paves the way to improved medical care. Born in England, Nightingale felt she was called by God to help heal the sick in hospitals. Horrified by the conditions of the hospitals, Nightingale worked tirelessly to improve them for everyone. She fought illness to continue her mission until her death.

I appreciate that the author took real quotes from Nightingale. The illustrations help show the horrible conditions that the hospitals were in. A very well organized biography about an inspirational woman who fought hard for the well being of others. ( )

The information in this book was very thorough and detailed for the reader's knowledge. I appreciated all of the specific dates and times, and even personal quotes from diary entries from Florence Nightingale. Before reading this story, I honest had no idea who she was, and I am happy to know that she is such an important person in medical history. One thing I learned about her journey is that she is the main reason why hospitals are as clean and sanitary as they are today. Florence became an advocate for patient health, therefore resulting in cleaner hospitals and better conditions for nurses and especially patients. This was such an educational read, and I feel that I really learned a lot from this short book! ( )

Florence Nightingale changed nursing during the 19th century. She followed her calling to work in hospitals. She made sure hospitals were clean and open to anyone who needed them. She opened a nursing school in London to train other nurses. ( )

While being born into wealth usually means easier access to one's dreams, sometimes those dreams are not acceptable amongst family members. Although Florence Nightingale knew her calling from a young age, she had to fight to begin her aspiration and became victorious as a grown woman. As a nurse, she became adored by all those that heard her story. She worked tirelessly to ensure the well being of every patient. Her deeds were done with no wish of grandeur, only a longing for advancement in healthcare. This book describes her accomplishments factually with dates and details of her life's events. An easy read to gain knowledge of a compassionate woman who dared to challenge her societal norms and become a pillar for superior caregiving. ( )

I have mixed feelings about this book. This book is perfect for K-3 students who just can't wade through those lenghty chapter books. It is abundantly illustrated, although the illustrations seem a bit dull. The colors are not very vibrant. Despite that, the author does a great job at flowing through Florence Nightingale's life using transition words. The main idea of the book is to provide an insight to the life of a young lady who served as a nurse to wounded soldiers and instituted many improvements in the field of nursing. ( )
