Last summer, I read a book by this author, and thought it a well thought out, non-sappy chick-lit type novel, so when this one fell into my hands with a batch of books I was given to BookCross, I thought I'd read it, too. Despite the fact that the title made me a little uncomfortable to read in public, it was a perfect poolside read. Again Geraci has created some likeable characters, and put them in realistic situations, laced with humor. While I could immediately see the flaws in the idea of a boyfriend of the month club, modeled on a book club, (some of which Geraci developed into plot arcs) it was amusing to see the follow through. Sometimes, when I start a book such as this, I'll write down at the beginning who I think will end up with whom. My score for this one was 100%, even for the duo introduced late in the book, but it was fun to see how the author brought everyone together. Boyfriend of the Month Club by Maria Gerac Grace is not having a good day at all. Everything is going wrong: her period came, her dress was a petite, she chipped her tooth, and she finally found her date for the night. She tracked Brandon down at an Irish pub and she was the only female in the bar. They had met in zumba class and the guys had fun with that comment. She works at the Florida Charlie tourist store and her Cuban father and grandmother run the place and she helps. One of the guys that was giving her a hard time at the pub is her new dentist but he didn't comment on that they had met prior. Family business problems and setting up the boyfriend of the month club keeps Grace busy. The women have set up guidelines to rank the guys they've gone out with and what was wrong with them, so others would know what to expect. Her brother Charlie and his on/off love affair and the problems with his job make this an almost comical book at times. Other times it's very serious. Good light read as you see what things the women try. She has agreed to help Dr. Joe with his Thanksgiving dinner as he has no clue about what to pick and what to serve, never mind about how to cook it. Love the Hemingway Corner of the shop and loved the tour. The grandmother has a premonition that the one who sent her flowers is her 'man' the one she needs to marry. The guy she's interested in is her dentist though. Other obstacles and the family curse keep them apart.... From Lilac Wolf and Stuff BooksparksPR had given me Geraci's latest novel, A Girl Like You, to review. I really enjoyed it. Well they had a promotion where if I signed up for 4 books to review, I could choose 3 just for me from their stockpiles. So when I saw her 1st novel, I snatched it up! I wasn't even planning on reviewing it. But seriously, this book made me laugh and cry. Grace has an Irish father and a Cuban mother, but there's no confusion with heritage. She works for her father at the long-time family-owned business, Florida Charlie's. Now that's where the conflict comes in. She loves the store and the history, but she also feels trapped while her brother is off being a successful tax attorney. It's like a grown-up coming of age story. Her life has to get completely up-ended before she can figure out what she wants and who she wants. She also learns a lot about herself in the process. I read this book in just over a day, because I really couldn't bear to put it down. It read really fast too. It's not that the chapters were short, but I was enjoying myself so much it just poured into me. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
At thirty, Grace O'Bryan has dated every loser in Daytona Beach. After the ultimate date-from-hell, Grace decides to turn her dwindling book club into a Boyfriend of the Month Club, where women can discuss the eligible men in their community. Where are the real life twenty-first century versions of literary heroes such as Heathcliff and Mr. Darcy? Could it be successful and handsome Brandon Farrell, who is willing to overlook his disastrous first date with Grace and offers financial help for her parents' failing Florida gift shop? Or maybe sexy dentist Joe Rosenblum, who's great with a smile but not so great at commitment? Unfortunately, like books, men cannot always be judged by their covers...--Vocer,[p.4]. It’s fine for what it is but it’s very much “empty calories” of reading.
I got it free which is good! ( )
