In this closely argued monograph of military sociology, Pratten examines the process of how the Australian ground forces transformed themselves from an organization living on the dwindling human capital of the ANZAC tradition, and more concerned with internal security than anything else, into a field force as modern as any in World War II. The main point for Pratten is that the Australian tradition of meritocracy only becomes apparent later in the period being covered, as at the start the cadre of men who commanded the infantry battalions of the Australian Imperial Force were very much a social elite and it took time (and much weeding) to create the current professional tradition. Another key point is that while the Australian Militia and parallel Professional Force provided just enough of a cadre to build the Second Australian Imperial Force, many of the problems of the Australian 8th Division (in particular) were simply due to that the cupboard was by that point bare. This is at least until the veterans of the Middle East came home. ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

In Australian Battalion Commanders in the Second World War, Garth Pratten explores, for the first time, the background, role and conduct of the commanding officers of Australian infantry battalions in World War II. Despite their vital role as the lynchpins of the battlefield, uniting the senior officers with the soldiers who fought, the battalion commanders have previously received scant attention in contemporary military history. This book redresses the balance, providing a gripping, meticulously researched and insightful account that charts the development of Australia's infantry commanding officers from part-time, ill-prepared, amateurs to seasoned veterans who, although still not professional soldiers, deserved the title of professional men of war. Drawing on extensive and original archival material, Pratten recreates battle scenes and brings to light many diverse personalities. It is a story of men confronting the timeless challenges of military leadership - mastering their own fear and discomfort - in order to motivate and inspire their troops to endure the maelstrom of war.
