In the tradition of 1984 and 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, 2031: THE SINGULARITY POGROM explores humanity's next great evolutionary challenge. Set in a violent near-future where human and artificial intelligence threaten to merge, 2031 is a clash of wills between software genius Ray Brown, his gifted but troubled son David, and megalomaniac Dianne Morgan, Ray's one-time lover. David Brown's unique ability to mentally communicate with Sentinel, the artificial intelligence running the Internet, marks him as a prime candidate for Dianne's experiment to integrate human and artificial intelligence. Then the tipping point arrives; in a gruesome delivery, David's beloved wife dies birthing a son who seems barely human. The antagonism between father and son grows into hatred as the boy matures. By age six, Martin Brown's powers already exceed David's, and he plots to kill his father in order to claim Sentinel as his own. Human evolution hangs in the balance as David, Ray, Dianne, and Martin clash in an epic conflict that comes to a startling and unexpected conclusion in 2031.… (meer)

Cover: The cover really creeps me out. I don't like it.

Story: The story is interesting, but its not the type of story that I like to read. As such, I couldn't really get into it.

Writing: The book is well-written. The author has an excellent grasp of grammar and the English language. ( )

"2031" was actually a pretty good book. I've underestimated it. I'm not really into computer related novels but was quite surprised that I loved this. It has a really good story and it was very realistic in a way. I just can imagine this happening into the future. This is really not far from happening and this really makes me scared. I just really loved and hated all the characters. It was actually a relief when Ray Brown killed Dianne Morgan. I was saying "Oh yes you bitch". If Ray Brown didn't do it I probably would! But going back, I would recommend this to everybody. It's action packed but still emotional and grounded. I would love to see this on the big screen. ( )

Finally had a chance to finish Dan Ronco's Domain Trilogy and I have to admit the last installment did not disappoint, in fact, it may be the best of the three books. Ray and his sons finally get their chance to tear down the evil Domain empire and its empress, Dianne Morgan. There is a lot of action and multiple story lines keeping the reader shifting back and forth between the wilds of Africa to the shore in Oregon. If you enjoy cyber, techno, science fiction thrillers, I encourage you to give this trilogy a try, I do not think you will be disappointed. ( )

Got this book through librarything giveaway program. This book has left me with a mixed feeling. The basic plot is good and thrilling. It reminded me at times of the holocaust (it's called a pogrom in the book). Other reminders of WWII are dr Chang as a modern dr Mengele and the 'boys from brasil'. Not sure if all that was intended, but as said, strong reminders for me. There are two (major?) flaws that I can see with the book.
The first major flaw is the setting of the story. I really do like SF and techno thrillers but with both I've always felt that there should be at least a certain degree of believability to the technology used or that it must be taking place far enough into the future to be possible (or another universe for that matter). This book starts in 2012 using technology which (as far as I know) has barely left the experimental stages if and only if invented yet. Holograms, Artificial intelligence, laser weaponry, android robots that cannot be distinguished from real people just to name a few. This is a shame, more so because the author wishes us to remind of the temporal setting every chapter which starts with the date... But, if you can overlook this (which I obviously cannot), as said, the plot is good and the story compelling.
This brings me to the second flaw which I personally found really annoying. Every few paragraphs there is a reference to some past event or an explanation of who's who. Now, if you haven't read the previous two books (I only read the second), this is helpful at the start of the book. But at page 300 the author was still doing it. It's not just the constant references, it is also the way they are put it. They seem unnatural (as if put there later) and break the storyline making the book harder to read than I believe is necessary. ( )

Dan Ronco’s 2031 The Singularity Pogram is an immersion into a struggle of ethics, power and science in a world of the future. Domain, a technologically advanced community, has risen above nations to become the major military and scientific power throughout the world. Domain’s quest for the unification of artificial intelligence and humanity is for the general community abhorrent. Ray Brown takes on the might of Domain and is imprisoned on a small island in the Indian Ocean by the leader of Domain, and Ray’s former lover, Dianne. After Ray’s escape he continues to build an opposition which leads towards the book’s culmination when the forces, ethics and protagonists collide.

Again and again the reader is confronted by a range of moral dilemmas; invitro fertilisation, artificial intelligence and the growing divide between the haves and the have nots are just a few. 2031 The Singularity Pogram challenges the foundations of technological progress without ethical consideration. Ronco never leaves the reader at a distant comfortable perspective exploring these issues. Plunged into the dynamic relationships of his characters the reader sees such overarching themes from the inside.

Ronco’s ability to bring together these overarching themes with the drama of conspiracy and world domination makes 2031 The Singularity Pogram a tasty read leaving the reader chewing on the dilemmas of a world without thoughtfulness. ( )
