I'm so glad i finally picked up this book to read. This is the second book in the night watch mini series within the Discworld series. It is the second I Discworld novel I have read and I'm so glad I did. I thought this book was wonderful. I enjoyed the first Discworld book i read, which was [b:Guards! Guards!|64216|Guards! Guards! (Discworld, #8; City Watch #1)|Terry Pratchett|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1431127356s/64216.jpg|1128601] but this one was just that much better. I thought the characters really developed very nicely in this book and I loved all the newly introduced characters as well. So many parts of this book left me intrigued, curious, happy, or amused. I didn't want to put this book down once I started. I also really enjoyed learning more about the different guilds and the kinds of people and places in Ankh-Morpork. It definitely helped me fill in the pieces of the city that I was imagining that were a little fuzzy after the last book. I think my favorite new characters in this book were Cuddy the dwarf and Detritus the troll. I grew to love the character of Carrot even more than I already did and Vimes continues to intrigue me. I think what was great about the characters in this book was that we got to see a different side and new part of all the characters which made them seem all the more real to me. I will definitely be trying to pick up the next book about the night watch ([b:Feet of Clay|34527|Feet of Clay (Discworld, #19; City Watch #3)|Terry Pratchett|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1320490628s/34527.jpg|3312754]) as soon as I can fit it into the schedule of all the other books I want to read but it is definitely near the top of my TBR list. The City Watch books are really starting to develop into something here... the plot was exciting and twisty, I loved the addition of Angua as a protagonist, and Vimes and Carrot are in top form.

I'm still a Ramtops girl at heart, but I'm quite enjoying my time here in Ankh-Morpork. ( )

Yet another fantastic entry in the Discworld series. You'd think, fifteen books in, that the characters, the plots, the settings, and the jokes would be getting a touch lame by now.

It's a testament to Pratchett's genius that, if anything, all are getting better. Corporal Carrot, initially a one-note joke, has real depth now, and the reader can't help both empathizing with him, and loving him. Detritus and Cubby, both new characters, are simply a blast.

And now, Pratchett gives us a murder mystery, while still applying his shockingly sharp wit to a variety of topics.

God, I love this series. ( )

Continuing the story of Guards! Guards!, Men at Arms follows all of my favorite characters from that former on a grand new adventure (of sorts).

We have Corporal Carrot:

Colon thought Carrot was simple. Carrot often struck people as simple. And he was. Where people went wrong was thinking that simple meant the same thing as stupid.

He's direct to a fault, not out of malice but rather because that's just the way he feels the world ought to be. Also, he might just become the King of Ankh-Morpork...

There's Captain Vimes:

“And give me some coffee. Black as midnight on a moonless night."

Harga looked surprised. That wasn't like Vimes.

"How black's that, then?" he said.

"Oh, pretty damn black, I should think."

"Not necessarily."

"What?"

"You get more stars on a moonless night. Stands to reason. They show up more. It can be quite bright on a moonless night."

Vimes sighed.

"An overcast moonless night?" he said.

Harga looked carefully at his coffee pot.

"Cumulus or cirro-nimbus?"

"I'm sorry? What did you say?"

"You get city lights reflected off cumulus, because it's low lying, see. Mind you, you can get high-altitude scatter off the ice crystals in--"

"A moonless night," said Vimes, in a hollow voice, "that is as black as coffee.”

About to get married and leave the City Watch (and not happy about it), Vimes is a wonderful grumpy old man how's better at his job than even he thinks he is.

New in this book, we have Angua.

“The boldest of the three moved suddenly, grabbed Angua and pulled her upright. "We walk out of here unharmed or the girl gets it, all right?" he snarled.

Someone sniggered.

"I hope you're not going to kill anyone," said Carrot.

"That's up to us!"

"Sorry, was I talking to you?" said Carrot.”

The epitome of kickass heroine with a secret, she's wonderfully done. I hope to see more of her in future books (and have a sneaky suspicion she'll stick around for a while).

And finally (heh) Death:

“I believe in reincarnation,” Bjorn said.

I KNOW.

“I tried to live a good life. Does that help?”

THAT’S NOT UP TO ME. Death coughed. OF COURSE... SINCE YOU BELIEVE IN REINCARNATION... YOU’LL BE BJORN AGAIN.

Death is absolutely one of my favorite characters when he's in other people's stories (he doesn't quite work as a protagonist in my opinion

Plotswise, The City Watch series thus far is interesting in that it has what feels like a lot more of a consistent plot than many of the other Discworld books rather than a single central idea and a bunch of jokes around it.

Overall, a wonderful book. There is a reason people suggest starting Discworld with the City Watch books. ( )

Though dotted with good and bad jokes Men at Arms isn't as purely funny as some of the series' earlier installments. Racial prejudice and gun control elicit some uncomfortably close-to-the-bone satire, while the search for the killer and his weapon is almost too gripping. By all means, give Pratchett a try, though you might want to start with, say, The Color of Magic or Guards! Guards! These books can sometimes be hard to find, even in paperback, but they repay any effort expended. I keep my copies on the shelf next to P.G. Wodehouse and Donald Westlake.
