A group of youngsters care for a neighbor's victory garden while he's in the hospital. The young protagonist learns about hard work and the value of friendship, while finally understanding some hard truths about war. The story is a bit on the sweet side--it reminded me of an American Girl book--but using the garden as a focal point was different. The author also resisted the urge to wrap everything up neatly and happily at the end, which made a better story than a Norman-Rockwell-style ending would have. It's about a girl whose brother is a pilot in WWII that is deployed. So her and her dad plant a victory garden and compete against their neighbors for the tomatoe tasting contest. One day their neighbor breaks his leg and can't compete anymore. So the girl and a couple of her friends from school decide to fix the man's garden and tend to it. Through many trials and tribulations the girls discover what friendship means and how to be a good citizen. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
