The story takes place in London in the early part of the twentieth century. The main character has an abusive home life. She does her best to accept her lot in life, while trying to find work that will improve her family's living situation. The problem is as soon as she overcomes one problem another problem emerges. She has so many problems or crises, one after another, its quite a feat she is still standing by the end of the book.
This book contains plain spoken prose, nothing fancy. Characters are one/two dimensional, not much flash. ( )
