When a family goes into the mountains for research (for the parents’ job), two boys are left alone due a death in the family. When the parents are gone, the children find themselves in trouble and one must face his fears to save his brother.

This book took me back to the adventures I often dreamt about when I was younger. I was always hiking through the woods with my cousins and nature watching and this book took me to a place I have never been: the mountains of Colorado. I intensely read the book and put myself in the shoes of the two boys. Their fear seemed real as did their admiration and courage.

This would be a book to consider reading as a class as the level seems appropriate for a fourth grade classroom. Students could analyze the setting, characters, rise, climax and resolution of the story quite easily. It is also a fairly quick read.

Newbery Medalist Reynolds (Shiloh) presents a solid action story, tense and involving although it does play out somewhat predictably.
