I'm not so fond of some of her companions, who are loud and overconfident. I'm also not so fond of the adults. The teachers are arrogant and callous. Sure, the heroes are stupid kids, but they are stupid kids that the world depends on. They could treat them with a little more respect, especially Sunny, who is not wilful or proud. I really wound up enjoying this read. I loved the setting of this book so much. I also really enjoyed the world building info that was given at the start of the book through various books. I really liked the four lead characters. I found the magic system was not as clear in the middle and felt confused at times. But i really liked the element of the murder mystery as well. It was a fast pace read. I am hopefully book 2 will make the magic system even clearer! I am excited to read it!
"Akata Witch" is a much-needed addition to the many titles featuring Caucasian protagonists — one that will appeal to readers who are interested in foreign cultures, tradition and beliefs, or those who live between cultures themselves. Onderdeel van de reeks(en)PrijzenOnderscheidingenErelijsten

Rating is more like 2.75 so I rounded up.
It’s a unique and interesting story, sure. I guess I just had a hard time staying interested in this one. ( )
