I loved "Disintegration" because it delved in the the true horror of human beings, themselves. The twist and turns had me reading everywhere on my Kindle, the horror so in-your-face cruel and the characters murky dark. Jacob and Joshua, twins, are not the type of people you want to be. Nicholson crosses into new territory by writing a novel where the main characters have no redeeming qualities and most people will likely not identify with them. Who's the good guy and bad guy? Well, sometimes a good story doesn't have one because the evil is so...evil. It was so very delectible for my twisted mind. Not something I would read frequently, but it was refreshingly different. And ugly. And twisted. Did I say twisted yet? "Disintegration" is very keenly edited which is a hallmark of Nicholson. No rush-to-print typos can be found in this book, which, to this reader at least, distracts me from the story. I give this novel 5-stars because I ate it up. I couldn't get to the end quick enough and to me that is what a book is all about. It's not going to be for everyone, but I truly enjoyed it. Could it have been better? Perhaps, but then I doubt it would have had that palpable evil and gritty feel to it. The writerly craft of this book is amazing. The description of pain is so right on I will refer people to it when they ask what my Fibromyalgia is like. The story pulls you along as your understanding of the characters deepens and changes. Saying any more might give something away and you need to experience this book without any forewarning. The only thing keeping me from giving it a 5 is that I hated the ending. It's not badly done, it's just not the type of ending I wanted. Mr. Nicholson is a wonderful writer, I just wish he'd write something less dark and twisted for me to read.
