It wasn’t the most polished writing, but the content took over. I’ve seen coyotes off and on throughout the area, from country to high-end residential areas and I find them to be a captivating creature and really enjoyed learning more about them. I found it to be the most interesting of all books posted that month. However, I was greatly disappointed in it. My main issue was the writing. The grammar was horrible and it would have benefited greatly from an editor. I also found the material to be organized in a confusing manner. I’m afraid that I can’t recommend this book based on the content. On the other hand, I would recommend it for anyone interested in the photographs. The pictures of the coyotes were wonderful. If you are looking for photographs more than content, this would be a good book to take a gander at. Deze bespreking is geschreven voor LibraryThing Vroege Recensenten. This book contains everything you need to know about coyotes. It tells about their appearance, diet, abilities, society, breeding and parenthood. It explains the threat to humans and livestock vs. other predators. It gives tips on how to control and/or live along side the adaptable coyote. I learned a lot about coyotes reading this, even though I grew up on a farm and have seen and heard them all my life. Deze bespreking is geschreven voor LibraryThing Vroege Recensenten. This book attracted me because for many(35) years we had captive coyotes on our farm & I wished to compare the author's observations w/my own. The author says that disciplining a coyote is not likely to be a very successful enterprise which was most definitely our experience! One phenomena I personally experienced was that as long as we had coyote(s) in residence no wild coyotes set foot on our farm though they would sit on the rim of the canyon & howl while our coyotes howled right back at them. I always wondered if they were telling them to "beat it"! However, several years after our last coyote passed on I woke up one morning just in time to see a pair of wild coyotes out in our field grab & carry off one of our cats. They did not seem to be in any kind of hurry but rather trotted casually up the driveway even when I rapped on the window & hollered at them.Coyotes are very opportunistic & we are moving into their territory -but they are not all that shy about invading ours either as they are frequently found inside the city limits of many large cities! They are just way too smart for us humans to totally exterminate them & besides who would want to? So as the author observes in the next to last paragraph of the book we are just going to learn 'ways to coexist with them'. I enjoyed this book very much & the author has definitely done her research thoroughly. I would definitely recommend it if you want to know the truth about coyotes instead of the all the nonsense that is out there. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
Coyotes hold a peculiar interest as both an enduring symbol of the wild and a powerful predator we are always anxious to avoid. This book examines the spread of coyotes across the country over the past century, and the storm of concern and controversy that has followed. Individual chapters cover the surprisingly complex question of how to identify a coyote, the real and imagined dangers they pose, their personality and lifestyle, and nondeadly ways of discouraging them. I do have one quibble which happens in the opening paragraph where Cartaino states confusingly that dogs originated in the Americas, traveling back over the land bridge to Eurasia at some point..... all I could think was..... wait, what? I think it is more unclear writing than bad information.... that wolves are #1, (and originate in Eurasia) then they spread out and the dog subspecies rises and does trek back over the land bridge, but it's complicated and as DNA testing gets better perhaps a clearer picture of just how it all worked will emerge. The main point being that dogs are very much a native animal to North America. And coyotes, canis latrans, are as much dog as wolf and deserve to live here as much as we do. Being me, I think, of course, perhaps more than we do. ***1/2 ( )
